GMs Only - Inkskin Question

Skull & Shackles

The party didn't kill this person:
They managed to take Isabella Inkskin Locke alive and remove the poison from her mouth. They plan to interrogate her. What should I do?

Use her spell tattoos to either kill herself, or escape.

Or use her familiar to do the same.

I would have her resistant to all questioning, including torture (she's seen some pretty bad stuff). Then I would have the party hear a rumor about a helm of opposite alignment and have them go quest for one, then they could use it on her and recruit her as a crew member and lover. :D

More seriously, I think she's such an incredible NPC that I think it would be a huge waste to throw her away with one fight scene plus a suicide. If I were running Raiders of the Fever Sea, I would bend over backwards to let the PCs try to 'rescue' her. I'd definitely make it a tough job, not something to skim over with two or three Diplomacy rolls.

I would actually seriously consider starting Book 3 while Book 2 is still in progress. Have the party sail off to Port Peril and meet with the NPC there and start chasing the leads on that. (There's fairly little combat in the early parts of Book 3, so it could definitely be doable I think.) Then try to sway and de-brainwash Inkskin over the weeks that they are pursuing other plots. Ultimately if they break through she could lead them to the sahuagin and allow for the completion of Book 2.

I could see so much rich interaction between 'whitebread' Sandara Quinn and 'crazy girl' Inkskin. She could be such a catalyst for fun RP on the ship.

I am with Samy. She is an incredible NPC. If I run this AP I am looking to keep her alive. As a minimum I would want the back story to come out, preferably I will use her as a recurring enemy.

I was going to fiddly with the backstory (I don't have my notes with me with the details)

This is a repost of something up put up a while ago that might be useful to you.

I'm thinking about taking out the factor of Inkskin dying no matter what. My idea is that if she survives, she's going to use her information as a bargaining chip for her freedom.

My thoughts are as follows: If she lives or surrenders, she can keep her map obscured with her tattoo familiar. Her father was the Ancient Mariner, who sailed under Capt. Wolfe a generation ago, as opposed to hundreds of years ago and had her, his young daughter, on board with him. Capt. Wolfe betrayed her father and left him for dead with his treasure horde, then having no use for Inkskin, sold her to the Tian pirate and her story progresses as written from there. Years later Krellort "enslaves" her again. She wants free of everyone and uses this as her chance to recover her father's body and get free of Krellort by pitting the PCs against them.

So, if the capture her, and agree to her terms, she'll deliver the exposition dump about Mancatcher Cove and the treasure and reveal her map. She'll deliver her backstory for sympathy. Her card in the hole is she knows about the Canopy Creeper. The Thresher under Gripe had a pre-arranged plan to track the PCs to the Cove. When the Creeper attacks, Inkskin offers an ultimatum: free her and she'll command the Thresher to help the PCs fight off the Creeper. Leave her prisoner and they face the Creeper alone. Real game bonus, freeing Inkskin reduces crew casualties to the Creeper. She may also come back as a black-hearted and ruthless pirate who owes the PCs and may join their armada against the Chelish in the last book.

Thanks for the ideas, everyone. Unfortunately, you all were too late... The party interrogated her four days ago. They did torture her and I ran with it being somewhat successful. She tried to convince the party that Krelloort had sent her as a last resort, but they didn't buy into it. I gave them grief when they got to Mancatcher Cove, though.

So is she dead? my party captured her too and removed the Tengu stole her wooden teeth while she was knocked out. I had her use that acid ability to escape her bindings and lose the crew watching her.

Now she's working as a chelish privateer with a Chelish commander I have chasing the PC's since they stole the Dominator.

How... how did they steal the dominator?

Lots and lots of GM hand-waiving, I'm sure, haha!

My group has just finished book 1 and I am already working on fully detailing out the Dominator and it's crew, because players have a tendency to be far more creative, daring and ultimately lucky, than the scenario gives them credit for.
