Hi LG,

I have several questions. Some about the Kickstarter and some about the AP itself.

I backed at the "Planetary Hero (Pathfinder)" plus $20 so I could get the Prequel and Chapter 1 adventures in softcover. I am expecting Chapter 1 PDF in mid August.

Q1) When can I expect the Prequel and Chapter 1 softcovers?

If this was my home group, I'd give them PCGen files for the campaign traits and for the new races, and print out non-color of pages 2-12 of the Players Guide and give each of them a copy, but I plan on running this as a PbP here on Paizo.

Q2) How much of the Players Guide can I post on line, most likely a link to my Dropbox account?

Since I will be running the Prequel, in Paizo Golarion world, the PC races at the start of the campaign will be standard (core rulebook).

Q3) Suggestions on how to incorporate the new races into Golarion? or
Q3a) It seems that they just "show up" (teleported, hijacked, etc) into Chapter 1 so could they arrive but in new bodies(races)?

thanks,

-- david

Hi there,

1. I'll be returning home toward the end of next week and will start sending out softcovers soon thereafter. That said, if we are very close to done with To Worlds Unknown by then I may wait a few days and send both softcovers together.

2. If you're sharing it with your home group of players, go for it. Otherwise, keep it under your hat.

3. That's an open question and the options you've suggested work well. We may include some info about that in the frontmatter or backmatter of To Worlds Unknown. I'll talk to Neil to see if that's something we want to add to the Player's Guide.

Thanks!

Will LG be sending an email requesting shipping address and what we want our extra money spent on?

Also, waiting and getting both softcovers at the same time is cool with me.

Adding that kind of information to the players guide, or even a separate download / blog / web page would be wonderful.

Backer surveys will be going out probably a week or two after GenCon, which is when you'll enter your address and provide info on extra pledges, etc.

Thank you again for your answers.

Have a good time at Gencon.

My mother, may she rest in peace, would be so proud of her engineer / programmer son right now. After all the time she spent while I was in high school making sure I at least passed English (my worst subject in high school and college) I found a typo in the Players Guide.

Page 8, right column: stymieng should be spelled stymieing.

Yea Mom !!!

My personal favourite typo so far is an NPC description in The Assimilation Strain where "X has a milky, left eye, and..."

I now want to know

a) What a "milky" is, and
b) What happened to the right eye.

Amusing typo aside, loving it.

Cloudy cornea = Milky eye

Keratitis

Looks like there should be no comma.

But, I am pretty sure you were just bringing up the amusingness of it.

Now.... is THAT a word?

Why, I believe a milky is a herbal lactation supplement. Perhaps Vessa serves it at the Hapless Harpy on special nights ... or maybe not. Yeeeesh!

Glad you're enjoying the scenario. Sorry for the typos! :-)

No problem with the Typos. Seeing it made me think of my mom (she has been gone for 5 years now) and brought back some happy memories.

One spelling error and a misplaced comma really isn't enough to warrant an apology, Tom!

It's LG's usual brilliant standard, and all I can say is that I can't wait to see the rest.

So... my question has to be, is it too late for you guys to radically rewrite some of the background options of the 5e version players' guide?

Because Patron/Principle of the Stars, Resilient Peculiarity, Stranger in a Strange Land, and Xenobiologist are pretty egregious violations of 5e philosophy. Backgrounds should not have those fiddly little +1s to this and that. They should be replaced with advantage/disadvantage or situational proficiency.

Pathfinder Maps, Starfinder Adventure Path, Starfinder Maps, Starfinder Society Subscriber; Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Superscriber

Yeah, I think there are some problems with the 5th edition versions.
Here are a few:

Spoiler:
Skill check DCs are a big one. I saw a couple of DC 30s in there, which is just about impossible in 5th edition unless you're very high level. The ettercap references the Pathfinder Bestiary. There are a lot of +1 magic items for a 5th ed adventure, including a +1 vicious dagger, which I don't think exists anymore. Vuelib uses a full round action for something and those are gone too.

Any chance we can get the egregious 5e stuff moved to a different forum?

The plan throughout the Kickstarter was that the general release for To Worlds Unknown will go out as soon as the following adventure, The Scavenged Codex, goes out to backer (and so on for each successive adventure).

Given the long delay here, we might check in with our backers and see if they'd like us to revise that plan. I think in the future we'll probably just put a time lag in place for general release after backers get their books, but for now that's what we stated in the Kickstarter.

In sum, though, while I can't give an exact date my expectation is that The Scavenged Codex will be ready to drop in the second half of March, and To Worlds Unknown will be ready to go out to everybody then!

As a backer, Any way you want it is ok with me.

Perhaps you'd care to leave a review and share your thoughts? ^^

(I'm kind of hoping that it can get a bunch of reviews shortly after launch, and so more casual people who see it later can be "Oh, hey, lots of people are saying this is good... maybe I'll check it out!" XD)

Very nice had a quick skim through although I do have a question saw a bit of art I assumed would be in the adventure but see no trace of it so just wondering if it was dropped or isin a diffrent volume

That piece of art is in the next adventure, The Scavenged Codex.

The spectacular saga of Legendary Planet begins in earnest with "To Worlds Unknown," a hundred-page behemoth featuring not only a massive adventure but also new magical and mundane items, a bestiary, an entire planetary pantheon, a gazetteer of the crossroads world of Argosa, and the first in a 7-part short story series by award-winning author Chris A. Jackson. Salutes go out to author Jim Groves, and contributing authors Thurston Hillman, Jeff Lee, Jonathan H. Keith, Sean K Reynolds, and Dan Dillon for their fantastic work making this adventure a reality.

This amazing adventure for 2nd to 5th-level characters is available for both Pathfinder and 5th Edition, and you can pick it up in PDF and print wherever fine gaming products are sold.

If you don't already have them, you also can pick up the 1st-level prequel adventure, "The Assimilation Strain," as well as the Legendary Planet Player's Guide featuring four new playable races, special campaign background traits, and more!

Any updates on when scavanged Codex will be available? Also is there anyway for people that missed the kickstarter to get in on this?

My guys are still at the beginning of the prequel so these questions will be a while before they become relevant.

1) When gaining the Mythic Tier in To Worlds Unknown, is the feat Morphic Nature a feat that should/could be given in addition to the normal feat given at 1st Tier?

2) Over the course of the adventure, how many Mythic Tiers will be given to the PCs?

-- david

@Kevin: They mentioned that development on The Scavenged Codex was continuing about a month ago, so it should be close-ish to done. People who missed the Kickstarter can simply buy stuff when it comes out. (KS backers get it early - that's one of the perks of being a backer and helping support its creation. XD) If it's just news you want, all you have to do is bookmark this link and check back occasionally. Most of the updates are public, so you can see what's going on (although I don't think you can comment).

@DM Papa: You can do it any way you'd like. If you want to have it as an additional mythic feat, you can, but the game assumes that they automatically take Morphic Nature as their first-tier mythic feat. I... don't know how many tiers are planned, but I don't think they intend to do a full 10-tier progression. Maybe 1/book, total of 7?

I think, as per Rednal's post, the assumption is that the players take Morphic Nature as their feat - although there's nothing stopping you deciding that it is a Bonus Feat and allowing your players a free reign...

With regards to the number of tiers, I raised the issue of Mythic in my PbP and Neil Spicer was kind enough to post his expectations on how far Mythic might go.

Thanks guys. I think that I am going to have them take Morphic Nature as their feat for 1st Mythic Tier, and not make it an extra feat.

Ah, that link says it all. 4 Mythic Tiers. Enough to be interesting but not so much to be overpowering.

I just got part 1 today. Two questions

1. Are there any rules for spaceships etc in the AP?

2. Are there descriptions of the planets in the solar system in the AP? Or the home worlds of the new races in the Players Guide?

I don't think there will be descriptions of spaceships. If there are, it probably won't be many - the transport is through gates, not ships. XD (For now, at least.)

They DO have a primer on one of the solar systems in To Worlds Unknown (starting on Page 72). Note, however, that this is not the only system the characters will be traveling to... in fact, it's implied that each chapter will take place in an entirely different star system. XD At minimum, expect to visit several of them.

This may have been answered before, but how integral is Mythic content to the AP? I'm not against Mythic content by any means, just unfamiliar with it, and wondering whether, if I would rather leave Mythic content out, it is easy to unbuckle from the AP.

It's not especially integral. They even give a suggestion for doing without it (namely, giving the important mythic feat, which is kind of plot relevant, as just a bonus feat instead).

Quick answers:

1. No. The style and theme of this AP is about sword and planet adventuring, rather than space opera, so MOST of the adventuring in the saga takes place planetside. Travel from planet to planet mostly takes place by way of stargate portals, though there are some adventures (especially Richard Pett's Confederates of the Shattered Zone, set in an asteroid belt, and Tim Hitchcock's Mind Tyrants of the Merciless Moons and my To Kill a Star, where there is some near-space action and some alternate means of transport across the gulfs of space.

In creating the themes for this adventure, we found that introducing active spaceflight and space vehicles pulled the focus away from the "pulp-style alien planet" action that we really wanted to embrace with this project, so we made a conscious decision to not have easy vehicular spaceflight.

In short, mechanical spaceflight in Legendary Planet isn't any more advanced than what we could do today in the real world, and there are other more exotic options that make pursuing that technology not particularly interesting to the people of the universe.

2. Each adventure features a planetary gazetteer that mostly details the planet itself but also gives a bit of information on other planets in the system. The general conceit is that the planets where the action take place are the primary inhabited worlds in their respective systems, so while there is some colonization the systems generally are not like the Golarion system in Pathfinder where basically every planet is teeming with intelligent life.

Thanks. I was just curious cause I was wondering how the AP would fit in a Dragonstar like game where the players "have/could gain" access to a starship rather than rely on the portals.

I picked up The Assimilation Strain and it looked pretty good.

It's very easy to unbuckle it on the player side. There are some mythic creatures in the AP, but those are pretty easy to run in a standard Pathfinder campaign. Most of their abilities are spelled out or already included in the stat block, and a handful of things that aren't (mythic surges, etc.) can be easily looked up for free on the PRD or simply ignored if you don't want to deal with them.

Have a possibly odd question about a piece of artwork

the piece with all the Iconics captured in an arena of some sort is from book 2 from what I can tell but is it from an actual thing that happens in the book or more of a chapter opener (Like how paizo monster books can have Iconics getting owned/killed?)

Let's say it's a thing that COULD happen, depending on how things go around the table. I haven't seen the finished manuscript for The Scavenged Codex yet, though, so I guess we'll see what surprises Mike, Mike, and Neil have in store for us!

Quick question for the authors / developers... (or anyone else running the game).

Are the Spur Rifles (used by protagonists early in the adventure) considered as Firearms? I have ruled otherwise - See Here. But it would be good to know whether I was right in my decision / logic, thanks for any insights.

...also to the authors / developers, my groups are having a great time - thanks for producing what you have so far... and I am really looking forward to the next book.

Despite the fact that it's called a rifle, I don't actually think it is. XD It doesn't say they hit touch AC (which firearms usually do), and they use a special kind of ammunition. Functionally, I think they're closer to a kind of advanced crossbow, rather than a firearm per se.

Zesdead wrote:

Not quite. There's no gunpowder involved in them. The spur "rifles" are essentially multi-shot crossbows, but fire smaller bolts which are hardened, organic spurs. Thus, they do 1d6 rather than 1d8 damage. They look even more like a rifle than a crossbow, however, and you can think of them as shortened, multi-shot "spear" guns, if you want. They're a jagladine weapon provided to their klaven shocktroops. We used Exotic Weapon Proficiency to govern their use, because they're in the same category as a repeating light crossbow. And they use normal attacks rather than relying on touch AC (like a firearm would).

Rednal / Neil Spicer - thanks... that was moreorless the logic I used... Although I hadn't noted the target touch AC aspect for firearms. Good to know that I am not being overly cruel to my players...

Definitely no spaceships, but there will be other vehicles involved on the surface of various planets. Also, Richard Pett is already exploring multiple methods of traveling between the asteroids of the Shattered Zone, where his adventure takes place.

Qstor wrote:

We're including a section in each planetary gazetteer that also addresses its star system and the other nearby worlds. We don't go too in-depth on them, however. The same limited material you'd see in a short description of a city or other locale in a gazetteer for a country/nation in a campaign setting. This will serve as foundational material in the event we expand on those ideas for an eventual Legendary Worlds Campaign Setting, but that's much further down the road. We've got an AP to finish first.

As for the homeworlds of the new races in the Player's Guide, we're leaving those less defined at the moment. However, there's a significant population of auttaine colonizing the Shattered Zone (featured in Richard Pett's adventure in Chapter 4 of the AP). And, in truth, all of the new races can exist on other worlds. Their "seed" stock was available for the Ancients to provide genetic material for them to evolve in other places. But that means they would have emerged independently from one another. It's the same situation for how John Carter shows up on Mars, and he finds other "humans" (in addition to some pretty weird aliens) living there. This is a common trope in the sword-and-planet genre. And, we'll be using a lot of racial variants and alternate racial traits to explain the differences of similar species that evolved on other worlds.

Hope that helps,
--Neil

You may want to rule that the spur rifle is close enough to a firearm that repeated use by someone proficient with firearms can at least reduce the non-proficiency penalty from -4 to -2 or something. No need to be overly harsh with it. But, the general principle is that the hardened spur is still trying to penetrate your opponent in the same fashion as a crossbow. Merely hitting the touch AC of your opponent isn't sufficient, because it's not a high-powered, high-impact bullet striking them.
