In my Skull and Shackles campaign I gave my players a set of magic items called "The Regalia of the Crimson Hare." It was basically magic items designed for a little kid like a dress up as a super hero set. The Crimson Hare was a famous in Andoran infamous by Andoran's neighbors literary work in which a Zoro like rabbit dude led the good forest creatures against various evil threats bad forest creatures. Basically it was Andoran propaganda with thinly veiled insults against its neighbors; basically the evil forest creatures were obviously meant to represent Chell invaders, Galt anarchists and evil lumber consortium profiteers. Basically it is a sort of Chronicles of Narina/Redwall type adventure. My players were smart enough to not give any one person more than one of the items cause it would have turned them into the Crimson Hare, because you know the items were cursed. I have wanted to play a character that envisioned himself as the Crimson Hare ever since.

This idea sounds ideal. Naturally because of the "March Hare" I would have to pick a different animal because I wouldn't want to identify with something so close to the plot. I will have to work on what I am thinking. But basically a kid who is having an identity crisis who dresses like their hero all the time. Imagine a kid who tries to pull of the Batman persona full time. Only in this instance the character would be more along the line of Puss in Boots or Repicheep from the Chronicles of Narnia.

The character would likely be a swashbuckler or bard.

We have a total eight people that have said they were interested and not said they were no longer interested.

Me'Mori may not be interested anymore since I thought I might've chosen gestalt.

Wondering Monster may not be interested since I decided otherwise.

Outside of that, if everyone else submits a character, no one else applies, and I stick with my original plan of five characters, I will have to cut at least one person. If it narrows down to only 6 before full characters are submitted, I might do with 6. I know how it feels to make a character and not make the game. It's happened to me and it sucks, so I'd prefer not to do that. Especially considering I know nearly half of the entrants.

I should say if people want to make sure they make the cut if it comes to that, I have a "turn ons" list. :P

1. Physical description of character before and after Wonderland Regalia.
2. Personality and history of character/family. Remember you start as an English child, not a denizen of Wonderland.
3. History with other characters. Bonus:This scores points for all involved. ;)
4. Not obviously built for power. This is rules light, but that's there for fun, not exploitation. Run sketchy stuff by me first and make it for cool factor, not pwn factor.
5. You are kids and you should have fun, but blatant and stupid slapstick comedy isn't my jam. You can get that in We Be Goblins if that's what you want.
6. Diversify the roles you're presenting. Balanced party is cool, so if 8 bards apply and you're the only fighter, you have a better shot at making it.
7. Character is in line with things I've said. 1 class, English, human, small size(but not young adjustment), two traits, one drawback (if you want), 20 point buy. This one is more of a requirement.

So there ya go. I think I may set the due date for Saturday of this week.

Will do. Sticking to cavalier. Might take the fighter class for feats later but thats about it. Will post details in an hour or two

I'll get to work on an idea.

Deadly Dealer just happens to have been the first thing I thought of when I saw the game idea, I just have to figure out how to frame the concept of a "Rogue" within the mindset of a little kid. I'll work on some ways to not make killing a primary focus. Probably the tricks that let me swap dice for other effects.

Hey guys, are you thinking that "boarding school" might be a way to go to give our characters some history with each other without being too heavy-handed?

That could work. Or even simply play ground antics.

Physical description of character before:
Luthian Fletcher is an athletic, but strong boy. Short, well-trimmed black hair. Ocean-Green eyes.
Tall for his age.

And after Wonderland Regalia:
Long White hair. Fiery Red eyes.
His fascination and imagination got the better of him. His make believe world took form, riding a wolf, yes, in his mind his real world companion, a young filly, is vicious and strong an dependable, so in Wonderland, she is a wolf.

Personality:
Well mannered. Polite. Gentleman. Loves nature. The outdoors. A bit shy.

and history of character:
He grew up on the estate. Been there all his life. The whole 13 years of his life. Grew up around and with horses. Training and games on the estate usually involved horses. Weekend trips were hiking in the woods, horse trails, competitions etc. All involving horses.

and history of family:
His parents own an Equestrian Estate. They make quite the bit of money from it. But they are well educated and well loved people. Striving to be the best people they can be. And they try to teach their son to be the same. Respect your elders, be kind to people and to those in need. Care for the environment, it’s all we have

Okay so we're English. I am assuming Victorian era?
I am trying to keep my concept close to history not just what I mentioned before.

Boarding school works or we are all simply from the same small area and play together in the same field/wood/park.

I want to keep the idea of the kid who fancies himself a hero.

I have 3 similar concepts all swashbuckling ideas.
1- A Victorian era Union Jack (like Captain America only British I would add a touch of Zorro.
2- Robin Hood not just a Ranger but literally ello I am Robin of Locksley.
3- A hero very much Puss in Boots a kid playing at being a talking swashbuckling creature.

Just to give some idea of the background I am thinking of for other characters to play off. No matter what I pick it should be that I am the son of a widow likely a house servant to one of you upper middle class or wealthy chaps. My mother and I moved into the area from York. Prior to our moving in we lived with my uncle after my father died. My uncle was a drunk and often abused my mum. My mum moved us when I attempted to stand up for her and got my own share of a beating. We m9ved into the area and my mum took a job that frankly is beneath her station but with no family support she has little clout left. When we arrived I was very withdrawn, sullen and kept to myself and to my stories of adventure. In the last few weeks I have come out of my shell but not as myself. I seem to be pretending to be some great hero of legend (I haven't figured yet). At first it was just talking in character. Then carrying around a play wooden weapon. Now even a costume. My behavior worries the grown ups. Have begun to play with the other kids but my imagined identity is my front.

What about a farm hand/stable boy?
That way we can play with each other, even play off of each other's games?
Luthian a knight like character and your character as you said, another hero? Batman and Nightwing kinda thing

Sczarni

I still maybe interested. Trying to think up an idea.

That works I was thinking that mom was the hired help but me having duties does make sense including in the stable or grounds (be it school or "the estate").

Question. Firearms?
I didn't know if you wanted to mess with them. Assuming 19th century England fire arms would be on the table but I didn't know if you wanted to bother with them.

I was just looking through some of the swashbuckler archetypes. Trying to narrow it down.

I'd prefer no firearms.

Old England had them, but you wouldn't as children have any, and wonderland isn't a very "gritty" type place.

I'll have my character posted tomorrow!

Coolness.

Looking forward to submissions!

Not looking forward to picking people...

This is Gnomezrule's alt. Union Jack. Better known as Tristan Baddock. I am still working on the fluff. Basically Union Jack is sort of the Captain America of England. Tristan has a book of the adventures of Union Jack and has adopted Union Jack as a persona of his own. Union Jack is a fictional hero of the Napoleanic Wars. He was a gentleman but looked after the lower caste, not unlike Robin Hood. He defied some of the English nobles and helped the poor. He was sent to the front as punishment. Being a man of honor he still went and fought against the French tyrant. The stories themselves are viewed as crass and low brow but Tristan love the tales and dresses in a Union Jack costume he made himself. I will be fleshing it out but I wanted to get the crunch in and post here because we were encouraged to intertwine our histories and such.

Annnd here's Yorick's first pass on the Bard. Background is totally fluid, subject to input/connections from other players.

I added generic fluff and stuff to Union Jack.

If I am reading the other entries so far right that is Luthien Fletcher and Charlotte Greystone are comfortably well off. If we were in the pick that might suggest that perhaps my mother works for Charlotte's family but that the community we live in has stables that might keep more than one well to do families' horses. So that if one of my chores is to shovel stables that might explain how I might know both Charlotte and Luthien.

I was reading about the setting of Alice in Wonderland and it notes that the author never expressly stated where in England thought the countryside of Oxford was believed to be the likely place. Now the City of Oxford has obviously the university but it is the larger county of Oxford shire. This means that there could be a small community feel, nearby countryside (like Alice was in when she stumbled upon the March Hare) as well as a not to rural not to urban local.

Just throwing some ideas out.:)

I would sure like to do this game. Still time for submissions? I would put a char together from scratch for this one:)

From Nixie:

Meet Gwen McBride, daughter of the scottish liard, Clan McBride. Not the most popular kid in Oxfordshire, but her fencing lessons keep the kids from making too much fun of her!

Happy to add more fluff in needed. But sometimes less is more haha! Hope she gets picked! *crosses fingers*

Not too late. What you add to your sheet is up to you. ;)

DEADLINE WILL BE 3:00PM EST, Saturday, August 1st, 2015.

I'd like characters finished by then. :)

This is the alias for Me'mori's submission(editing to come)

I'm going to go with Rogue(Cutpurse), and will be taking the Card Sharp talent from the Harrow handbook.

I haven't seen any submissions for the uncouth Street Urchin type, so I'll fill that slot.

It's rare for Ama to be seen out in the rural areas, but not entirely unknown, especially around harvest time. While she's not entirely on the up-and-up, the couple of kids that she's run into(literally in a case or two) haven't noticed more than a couple pence missing. Just the same, when findings have been good, she'll spot them a treat for a bit of conversation, especially when it's boring. The orphanage is a boring place, but it's still a roof overhead, and decent enough food.

Picking pockets is not the most lawful of things to do, and getting caught could mean a stern lesson from the matron, or maybe even a visit from the head of the local school to see if "this one is capable of some reform". Her usual response would be a few days of being good before gradually going back to her regular antics. She could be that stray pet that everyone does not mind, or that lovable scamp whose actions are something to be amused by. ("You don't get into trouble if you can talk your way out of it, aye?")

Entirely possible that she's passed a few minutes with Tristan, wondering why he would be shoveling the stables instead of doing something fun. Gwen may have seen her from a distance, rumpled and dirty, perhaps doing something that was suspicious, while Luthien and Charlotte may have found some trinkets missing after a walk through town and a "chance" encounter.

Appearance: Dressing raggedly enough to make the "poor orphan" bit believable when begging, it isn't really that hard to turn the look into something that would let her slip into an inn on occasion. Her hair is short by necessity, since braids get pulled easily, and make perfect leashes if one was unfortunate to get caught and hauled to the magistrate or the matron. The "dirty" is more show than actual, and she's finding a lot of use in acting the part of someone's daughter. If only she had manners...

In Wonderland, she'd probably have all of the fancy tweed suit like the scholars that she's seen, the white shirt with sleeves under a nice vest.

Magic you can not worry about me... I am withdrawing... just am not feeling it right now.

It's alright. Maybe you might want to join later in case anyone needs to drop out. :)

Well Hello Edward Sobel! Haven't bumped in to you on the boards in a long time. I hope life has smoothed out for you. Blessings.

fancy having a brodder? I ain't much good at them fancy sword flourishes but I can still give a good thrashing

Absolutely!

I added a bit of fluff to Union Jack's profile; a small write up of what the basic story of the fictional Union Jack that Tristan dresses up as. Sort of mashing up Marvel comic's Union Jack (basically a British Captain America) whose major nemesis was a vampire named Baron Blood which adds a sort of Van Helsingness to his stories. I just backed up the stories a hundred years + and made him a hero of the Napoleonic Wars rather than WW2.

Equipment is all that remains, however I'm away from home for a memorial. With Ama being an urchin, I suspect that squirreling away some equipment might be plausible, but not the whole kit. I won't be back until early Sunday, so I hope you don't hold it against me.

I understand circumstances.

Equipment is obtained in wonderland. You don't have anything real to start.

Shadow Lodge

Not even a small sword for the swashbucklers? Or similar gear that makes sense to the background? (My character doesn't have any iconic equipment from the real world unless you count his familiar and the fact that he wouldn't be naked)

Toy stuff, and training stuff is fine, but you're getting all your real major stuff in wonderland. Feel free to design it around a theme.

Only about 5 and a half hours left! Current list of applicants.

Character - Player - Class
Luthian (Background) - Seth86 - Cavalier (Beast Rider)
Union Jack - Gnomezrule - Swashbuckler
Charlotte Greystone - YoricksRequiem - Bard (Umbral Weaver)
Gwendolyn McBride - Nixie - Paladin
Ama Freewater - Me'Mori - Rogue (Cutpurse)

I think Lord Foul II and Wondering_Monster are the only other people who have expressed strong / recent interest but haven't posted someone yet.

Shadow Lodge

I've been busy at work but I'm making a shamen (my first) by the name of Edwin McBride

This is an absolutely fascinating idea, and makes me wish I weren't so new to play by post games. Guessing people probably prefer no absolute newbies though, so I'll probably just watch from the sidelines. This looks brilliant though!

been around..

Bahram got another game but it isn't quite the same.

I have to admit, I regret everything that happened. good to see your game continuing.

I almost got back in with the new GM, but he wanted me to take a perm negative level to continue and I thought that was a little to much a penalty on an already fairly weak character.

Celissa wrote:

This is not true. I have always found new players or new pbp players to be amazingly fun in every game. You should immediately apply, haha!

Edward wrote:

Awe, no big deal. I know we shall meet again on the fields of pbp battle soon. And yeah, it always feel sickening to de-level a character. But we do what we must to save all the innocents and kill all the beasties:)

I'm fine with new players.

The only problem is making a competing character in 3.5 hours. :/

Good luck people!

Aye, I saw this very late. I'll watch with interest, and perhaps be around if you need someone later. :)

And it's 3:00 here!

Thanks so much to everyone who applied!

It looks like we have 6 close to finished if not totally done characters.

As I said before, since we have 6, I can handle one more than I originally intended, so no one gets left behind! :)

I'll give people some time to finish up.

If you didn't get a character up and ready for this, drop a post if you'd be interested as a back up. :)

Just need to make an alias now =^^=

Now to add stats etc. A bit later

Free from his tedious daily lessons that his mother has arranged as part of their boarding arrangements Tristan reaches into his beat up hat and produces a wool cap. He pulls it over his head and face so only his eyes show. He was last seen by those in the house exiting the back door brandishing a wooden toy sword. At the top of the garden stairs he called out as if leading men into battle, "For God, the Queen and St. George. Excelsior!!!"

We're going to wonderland? Weeeeeee!

Done =^^=

Wooo!

Discussion is up. Feel free to talk while people finish up characters. ^_^
