That DAGGUM Time Devourer from Chrono Cross, if played by a competent GM.

I WANT MY COLORS ALL IN THE CORRECT ROW, DAGGUMMIT. WHY WON'T YOU LET ME HAVE ALL MY COLORS IN THE CORRECT ROW. >:(

But they only teleport you through time. You want one that you shouldn't blink from a video game? How about that statue thing from that SCP horror game. I can't remember the number off the top of my head.

don't click me if you're squeamish

EDIT: Linked it for convenience. :)

(But seriously, don't click if you're squeamish. SCP has a great many awesome and terrible things.)

SCP-173 isn't gory like some, but it is one of the more unsettling pictures on the site.

I must be demented, I think it looks cute. Would consider buying a plushy version if they had one.

When it moves, it's not as cute.

I hate and rage from the fact that Chrono Cross fell so unbelievably short of it's predecessor more than all the enemies from both games combined.

It was the second lamest sequel to an amazing game of all time, worse than the bland fest that was Mother 3, but still falling short in ineptitude of every FF Tactics in scope of just how awful those piles of garbage were.

Seriously, Tactics sequels are like younger brothers of doctors that majored in philosophy instead of following the older brother into med school. Pure disappointment to their creators and anyone who's met the original.

On the flip side, any boss from 2D Mario that isn't the first one. Succeeded at 3 easy acrobatics checks and you win.

Lord British from Ultima: Exodus. OK, so technically he wasn't an enemy, but you could fight him. You would lose, as he did an absurd amount of damage per hit and never flinched no matter how much damage you did to him. My brother and I always wondered why he needed adventurers when he was so powerful...

On the flip flip side, playing under 2d Mario conditions [ignoring extra lives.] Never more than 2 hits away from death, with 'power ups' few and far between.

Wiegraf.

I shouldn't have to explain this one.

If you played FFT, didn't have a friend or strategy guide warn you about him, and you saved after Riovanes Castle 1 without level grinding for at least 10-15 levels above usual, you hated that dirty mother lover, and you had to start the whole game over...

Pfft. But he has a terrible Fort save and an incredibly low Con combined with a complete lack of suspicion so all you have to do is put some "special seasoning" on that bread he's about to eat and...oops.

yeah, you think weeping angels are bad? where do you think they got the idea?

other ones of note:
682: will not die, thinks all life is disgusting, will kill you on sight.
096: if you can see it's face, you're dead, it will increase in speed until it finds you, and then devour or destroy you. someone was shown a photo several hundred miles away, it gained speed until it reached the target some 2 miles or so under the ocean.

touche

Multiplying lice or insects of Angband from Angband or its variants.

The worst were Hummerhorns in ToME 2. They multiplied quickly, hit to inflict confusion, and in some of the "dungeons" where they could appear the walls were trees they could fly over so you couldn't contain them with doors or choke points.

In Pathfinder terms they hit to confuse (fort save since it's described as a poison effect) and create another hummerhorn as an Ex ability probably on a 1d4 round cooldown like dragon breaths.

Have fun.

Laura Reborn from The Evil Within. Oh look, teleportation plus instant kill.

Safer Sephiroth, because let's just face it, Supernova, Heartless Angel, and Pale Horse can suck pretty hard if you are unprepared.

The Mirror Knight from Dark Souls 2, BECAUSE IT CAN SUMMON OTHER PCS TO MURDER YOU!

The Seneschal from Dragon's Dogma. Oh cool, you knocked me down to 1 HP? Well, try to get your stupid pawn to grapple me so you can shank me while I light blast you and wiggle out of your grapple in 2 seconds.

The Giant Baby boss from Zombies Ate My Neighbors. That abomination was SO obnoxious back in the days of my youth!

Any *insert multiple expletives* enemies with reflect damage or thorns aura from the Diablo series. Try having a Demon Hunter with almost 1,000 Paragon levels and almost 3,000,000 base DPS use Rapid Fire into a crowd of enemies that suddenly turns on reflect damage... and she only has about 500,000 HP. D:<

The Moon Presence from Bloodborne. Not because it's hard, but because of what happens after you beat it.

Fume knight might be interesting, I mean mechanically he doesn't work (dual wields a straight sword and an ultra greatsword), but he's resistant to all forms of magic and can't be stunned or really any condition can effect him. then he just lazer greatswords you.

A Ladder from pretty much any game

In that same vein: A small shrubbery from any early RPG. Infinite HP, regeneration, immunity to all damage types, and you cannot climb over it or teleport past it. It can only be destroyed with a special weapon that can only be wielded by a 10th level character. Imagine the BBEG dropping a few of those outside his door to finish his plans while the party levels up.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

In the same vein: A locked door in Fallout 3 or NV...falling apart, dilapidated, with huge holes in it, but it's lock DC is always beyond your range. You can't break it, you can't squeeze through the holes, you can't even reach through the holes and unlock it it from the other side.

?

But the locked doors in FO3 and New Vegas are always in EXCELLENT shape. Almost unbelievably good.

Most of them look like this or this.

Which would be frustrating for different reasons in Pathfinder rules (they usually have some pretty good locks, and are made of reinforced steel so are hard to bust down).

Though then again, you (well, I) carry around about 30 blocks of C4, 150 assorted grenades, 300 missiles of various kinds, several dozen miniaturized nuclear warheads, 25mm grenades, 40mm grenades (with the launchers to fire them), a gauntlet that makes things explode, a SWORD that makes things explode, and various other heavy weaponry.

And yet I still can't bust that durn door.

Well I can since I use Project Nevada, which has a setting that lets you use explosives to "unlock" locked doors (Explosives skill equal to Lockpick skill needed IIRC), but the base game doesn't.

While we're discussing game mechanics: stairs from Castlevania. You're stuck on them like glue, unable to jump or move faster than a brisk walk, unless you get hit. Then you go flying, frequently into a nearby pit.

Instant-death Pitfalls, the bane of just about every 2D platformer.

in Dark souls, ladders are your friend, you can heal on them and most enemies take forever before trying to get on the ladder. some can't ladder.

has anyone said mimics? I don't remember if mimics are a thing in any recent DnD. basically a chest that just eats you.

in Darksouls they will kill you instantly upon you opening them, it would be like a mimic getting a full attack on your when you opened it.

They're honestly not that hard. Dark Souls is kind of like a puzzle game in an adventure skin.

Once you know the enemy's "trick" and how to beat it, they become trivial.

And how many times with each enemy do you die to figure that out?

Nope. Just like I hate games that absolutely require mindless level grinding, I am not a fan of needing to play and die a thousand times to figure a pattern out.

No, I played enough Mike Tyson's Punch Out as a kid to get all the "figure out their pattern and instead of doing anything innovative, dodge just right and then counter ----now----" that I will ever need in life.

Usually once. They're not particularly obtuse.

"Ah, I see, this guy lunges with his sword."

"Yes, those snakes shoot lightning bolts. Terminate with extreme prejudice. From a distance if possible."

"Lol, I can cut off its tail."

the game is entirely fair, it's just it actually requires you to change your strategy for your enemies. tough skeletons that keeps resurrecting in your way? use a miracle weapon to obliterate them and stop them from resurrecting. in other words jsut because you upgraded a greatsword and put everything into strength, doesn't mean you should always be playing to that strength.

except for sen's funhouse, that place is not fair.

like when i first started i played concepts and so if i was playing a knight i'd never use a bow, eventually i was like, "i need to just have good range" and so now any time i don't have magic, i have a crossbow or bow upgraded as much as i can spare.

Let's see... Omega (MegaMan Zero 3), Luca *********ing Blight (Suikoden 2)- seriously he doesn't have any regard for the initiative order, play the game again, he goes whenever he damn well pleases-, Sion (League of Legends), the Avatar (The Last Airbender/ Legend of Korra)... etc.

Scarab Sages

Lord Xeen - Only one thing in the whole world can harm him!

Sheltem - It doesn't matter how powerful you are, you'll never be anywhere near his level - you need to smuggle his archnemesis into his castle in a magical box...

Spoiler:
and even said archnemesis can't defeat him, save by last-ditch self-destruction.

Going back to Pokemon, any electric type is absolutely horrifying. Why? Thunder Wave. 100% paralyses unless you're under Blur or something or are immune to electricity, no save. Many electric types carry the Static ability which has a 30% chance or paralyses to anyone that touches it with no save once again. And then there's the 10% chance from pretty much every electric attack in the game.

The less said about the moves that have a 30% to instakill anything under the user's hit die the better.

If you're looking for video game inspiration for Weeping Angels, I'd have to offer up the Boos (ghosts) from Super Mario. They only move when you're not looking at them, and it's always directly toward you to attack.

Scarab Sages

The clowns from the The Tick video game.

The Quasar Klutzes and their horrible robot dog from Swamp Gas.

The Shadow Wraith from Gauntlet: Dark Legacy.

The fireberry cave from The Legend of Kyrandia.

Carmen Sandiego.

And on that note, any Pokemon with Guts deals double damage when suffering from a status effect, and there's a lot of statuses in Pathfinder.
