To be upfront - I am not a writer. This will not be eloquent. Or even logically ordered. It will be what it will be.

I will use this thread to describe how things go in my game. This is my first time as a GM. Although, I have many many years as a player. Yes, I am keeping mythic. I have 4 players. 15 pt buy. No stat below a 10. 2 traits with one being an AP trait. I did not limit classes or races.

There are some things I'm altering with mythic. The wizard will not be able to spend a point to cast ANY spell. That is just too much. Also, any mythic npcs that the PCs go up against will have the ability to spend a mythic point to negate a crit.

I am also not using XP. XP to me is archaic. I don't like it as it leads to random encounters that exist for no other purpose than to provide XP. That is a dumb approach to have in my opinion. So, the PCs will level up when the AP says they should level up.

So, my 4 players are as follows:

A paladin of Iomedae (Marshall). Her backstory involves a sister who is a follower of Shelyn. Who has convinced her that there is beauty in everything. So, based on circumstances, before a fight he(the player) will offer a chance for the npc to surrender and be offered redemption. If they refuse that offer, gods help them.

A magus (Champion). Some sort of weird blooded tiefling. I forget as I don't have the character sheet in front of me. Kensai archetype. Will be using a Katana.

A druid (Hierophant) who will worship Sarenrae. While not a full time healer, he will be where most of the player healing comes from. This will be supplemented by adding healing pots and wands to treasure tables.

A wizard (Archmage).

OK. I know there was a little bit of discussion on how to start the AP. Some people went as written; others wanted to add some back story into Kenabres. I decided to go as written. After the session ended, I asked the players about this. They all agreed that they liked how I chose to go. So, there's that.

So, on to the actual game. I will spoiler as I will probably bounce between GM stuff and player stuff.

Spoiler Button:

Let me say that I feel I butchered the 3 npcs who accompany the PCs after their "fall" at the start. It was just too much to juggle. I managed to describe how each of them were acting. I even had one PC - the paladin - say that when we get to the surface I am going to punch Horgus in the face. Poor Horgus.

So, since I skipped on voicing the NPCs myself, there were a couple of moments where I just read to the players what was going on the them. For instance, the "situation" that occurs between Anevia and Horgus when the PCs reach the Torag temple? Yeah, I just read that scene straight from the book. My players took it in stride and ran with it. I just kept asking for Diplomacy rolls every time they spoke to the NPCs. Based on some good Diplomacy scores and some good rolls, all of them are Helpful. So, they have that going for them.

I did not really use any of the NPCs in combat. I only entered Anevia into combat when things got tough for the PCs. She'd hobble in, let fly a few arrows, and then fade away.

They did agree to carry the mongrelmen's message to the leaders of Kenabres. Leading up to this agreement with Chief Sull, the players were engaged in discussions on whether or not to mention these people to Kenabres.

We probably played for about 6-7 hours on Saturday night. We managed to finish part 2 of Book 1. So, the PCs cleared out the traitor's den and made their way to the surface. I was able to show them the clean map of Kenabres again as they surfaced. "This is what Kenabres looked like when you arrived". <flip page> "This is what it looks like now". Devastation.

I did cut several encounters. Since I'm not using XP, I do not see the need for every room to have an encounter. So, if an encounter does not really serve the plot, BOOM, gone. Things like removing boring or non plot advancing encounters will allow me to be more dynamic and creative with Big Bad encounters. I anticipate making good use of some mythic baddies from the fantastic folks at Legendary Games.

I will add this. Since time was running short at the end of our session, they completed the first 2 parts of Book 1 at 1st level. Like I said, I did cut encounters and fudged some dice rolls. But, oh well. My players said they felt sufficiently hammered. Mission accomplished.

Hm. Sounds like your players had fun.
But tbh, cutting out the whole roleplay with the important NPC sounds like a bad idea (to me).
I had some thoughts about the whole "Manage a lot of NPC" - stuff in this AP but decided to deal with it because its a roleplaying game , so a lot of roleplaying should be part of it.

Regarding the beginning, i got some really nice background stories from my player and writing some stuff for them to feel "home" in Kenabres ,letting them go around the city , take a few drinks, meet some NPC...so the devastation when they realize that its all gone will be big.
Man...one player just drew a map of kenabres into his players diary :D
It will be a great moment when they just listen to Hulrun and then the Storm King appears, Tendelev raising up....this will be great.

We start in 2 weeks, i will give a report :)
Maybe a picture of the players faces when i reveal the new Kenabres map :D

Well, I didn't intentionally set out to "cut out" all the role playing opportunities with the npcs. It just kinda wound up that way. In the moment I sorta got overwhelmed by it all.
