pfs Wisdom focused Inquisitor: Is it a useful build?

Advice

I've been batting around an idea for an inquisitor to run in Society play. My worry is if the build would even be all that useful (combat wise) at high levels.
Here's what I got so far:
Human Inquisitor (preacher) of Milani

Str10 Dex14 Con12 Int10 Wis 18(+2) Cha7
Conversion Inquisition adds Wis instead or Cha to Bluff, Diplomacy and Intimidate
Feats: Point blank shot, Precise shot

I know that Inquisitors are not full casters but I think with the archery feat line I may be able to balance strategic casting and knowledge gathering with a few good shots here and there.
Or am I completely off base?

Scarab Sages

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Archery really isn't that good without a STR bonus. Lack of IPS means you will be eating an almost permanent -4 to hit on 3/4 BAB class with a 14 attack stat.

You'll do no damage at all outside of judgements and bane, and those are limited per day. It's going to be painful.

It will be less so with Sanctified Slayer, or if you can fit in guided hand or a few zen archer levels

Silver Crusade

This is a character Ive played (click avatar) and I have always found it to be both useful and very fun.

Going Wis based really helps to cut down on some MAD, but not to the point of making the character feel like I dumped something.

Most of an Inquisitor's class features are designed to make him better at physical combat. If you ignore that, your Inquisitor will be useless most of the time. But if you bring that Wis down even just to 16(+2), that would let you get 12 Str and 16 Dex, which could be a passable archer.

But if you want to focus on spellcasting and Knowledge skills, why not play, for instance, a Cleric with the Knowledge domain, or a Shaman with the Lore spirit? (Or any 9-level Int-based caster)

Inquisitors get the Repeating Xbow prof. Use on of those for a while, if you aren't planning on getting a Str bonus anyways.

You can certainly play a competent and useful archer with no str, you just have to focus differently.

Divine Favor and Magic Weapon , and later Bane, mean you never really lack at damage.

Go with odd numbered stats (2) since PFS ends at 12 with the exception of conventions, you will see 2 increases normally.

If not going Str bonus bow, STR 10 Dex 17 Con 13 Int 8 Wis 18(+2) Cha 7
This lets you get a attack boost at 4, and a HP boost at 8. Personally I would do Dex 19(+2) Wis 16, since spellcasting can be boosted later since most spells you cast are buffs not saving throw spells.
Inquisitors get plenty of skills, and you can always drop the favored class bonus in it at low levels, since from 4+ you'll want it for bonus spells known.

If you want to double your effectiveness, take the Inquisitor Archetype that gets you a full druid pet, the hunter buffs and the shared teamwork feats. Sacred Huntmaster.

It loses judgements, but those (while awesome) are nothing compared to a full druid pouncing companion fighting alongside your archer. Or better yet, with a couple feat investment your mount. (being able to negate one hit per round with a ride check on your animal companion is AWESOME in play, and you can make a full ranged attack while your mount takes his full round as well.)

Scarab Sages

I would avoid preacher archetype.
1) I think you'll get a lot more utility out of your teamwork feats by counting your other allies as if they have them.
2) At maximum you can use your determination 5 times per day (at level 12).

If you want to roleplay him as a preacher that's all well in good. I just think it's a mechanically weak archetype.

Hmmm ...
Sacred Huntmaster, huh?
That would extend the usefulness by a stretch, wouldn't it?
So, lower Wisdom to 18 and bump up my Dex and then grab myself a holy pet.
I like it.
