Yes, you heard right. AAW Games / AdventureAWeek.com has just launched a Kickstarter for a Pathfinder adventure steeped in Norse mythology.

Here are the details and the LINK!

INTO THE WINTRY GALE is a Pathfinder RPG Adventure for 4-6 Level 10 Characters Written by Justin Andrew Mason, staff writer for the ENnie Award winning Adventureaweek.com Blog. Having authored over a hundred articles and a dozen adventures for the AAW Blog, Justin Andrew Mason is now tackling a super-sized adventure module inspired by the viking sagas and ancient Norse mythology.

The arrival of the celestial event known as the Ohjaslange heralds the return of the dreaded Jǫtunn (ice giants) to the lands of Vikmordere. The valley is engulfed by an unnatural blizzard and unending frigid gale of the likes which none living have ever seen. A dark and evil curse has reawakened, after dormant centuries, to cloak the sun and bury the land beneath frost and snow.

Directed by ancient Vikmordere legend, warriors and shieldmaidens from the many clans have gathered in the village of Völsfiheimr on the shores of Serpent Lake to prepare for the upcoming battle. At stake is the very future of their people. As a horde of undying skeletal ice giants begin a long march down from a ruined mountaintop fortress, Vikmordere warriors in the valley resolve their mettle by singing lore of heroic bravery and ancient battles.

Wintery war is looming, and many echo the charge of ancient omens -- the time has come to seek out the lost artifacts of the legendary Jarl Vornig – for it was he who last quelled the ice giant uprising, felling the great ice giant king whilst wielding a divine sword and magic aegis. If these powerful artifacts cannot be rediscovered, and the power therein harnessed, the Vikmordere warriors stand little chance against the onslaught of the evil Jǫtunn.

Despite the gathering of great warriors, the Ancestor Spirit seems to have other plans to secure the safety of the Vikmordere people... A group of outsiders has arrived at the Great Hall of Völsfing upon the eve of battle. The strangers have been guided through the blinding blizzard by a mysterious fire-wreathed ember owl, and are unwittingly about to become epic heroes in a new saga.

The Vikmordere are wary of their new guests, yet submit to the will of their ancestors and acknowledge the omen of adventurer's arrival. The barbarian clans place their hopes into the hands of these enigmatic visitors who must now prepare to venture out into the wintery gale in search of the ancient Jarl's artifacts.

There's a great explanation on what makes THIS adventure so unique from the others you see in the marketplace over here on the AaWBlog!

If this is anything like the other kickstarters they've done, it will be well worth it. The art should be amazing as well.

As an outsider on this one, I'm really looking forward to what J.A.M master Justin produces. It's going to be one heap of fun!

"Wintery"? Really? I would have thought "Wintry". Oh well.

Funded! :D

I found this odd as well, but as it turns out, "wintery" is a little-used variant of "wintry". So while "wintry" is the version you'd most often see, "wintery" works as well.

Oh, and I'm super excited by this project. Nice and short too.

Good luck with that! :)

Looks like an adventure that DMs should play Manowar in the background!

Here's what Justin told me when I originally brought up this concern:

On the Wintery vs. Wintry topic --
--
Wintery is an accepted alternate spelling of wintry (http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/wintery); even the default spell checkers recognize the spelling. "Wintry" is actually derivative of an even older spelling "wint'ry" which dates back to old anglo-english. Wintery goes back hundreds of years in the English language spelled that way. Even the American Copy Editors Society (ACES) uses the "wintery" spelling (http://www.copydesk.org/blog/2014/02/21/celebrate-national-grammar-day-in- verse-for-fun-and-prizes/). I can find examples in 38,000 individual published books via Google that use "wintery" dating back over a hundred years. And personally, I prefer the three syllables to the two -- "wintery" sounds like "winter"; whereas "wintry" sounds to me like how an old granny would say "wintery."

I did see the Grammarist page, but even there with Sarah Belliston's "it's wrong" claim, she has to admit that it's been in use a very long time. In the end, I chose Wintery because it actually contained the word "winter" and was three syllables as opposed to two.

Thanks!

Regardless. Wintry. An old granny's version sounds much more verisimilitudinous than "modern spelling". Then again I wanted the Skybourne folks to change their project to Skyborne, so I'm likely a shallow aesthete who gets irritated by small, unimportant details, and doesn't back projects based on that. ;)

Congratulations on your funding and may the project go from strength to strength...

Over $10,000! Wow!

Check out the newly revealed (and soon to be revealed, the way things are going!) stretch goals here!

Hi,

The Kickstarter says 4-6 Level 10 characters. What level should the characters be by the end of the module, please?

10-13 with the core adventure, 8-15 with optional content added. :D

Another book unlocked! Funding ends on Friday afternoon and looking like it'll get to the $15k stretch goal before then. :D

OK. So what about the 'Gale' part? Why not 'Gail?'

BTW: I'm a backer, and looking forward to playing!

I'm not sure we've got a Gail in the book, but there are many blustery winds, though I reckon it's got more to do with the ice giants as a metaphor.

:)
