Apparently the release is 9 AM PST, so depending on the timezone you live in you may not be able to get it till later.

I'm annoyed too, I'd hoped to start the DL early this morning, but ah well.

It's out now :-)

It is almost night now here (Italy) and the DL started while i was away. Got home to find it at 33%......guess i'll have to wait a bit.

It is well worth the wait. The game is AMAZING! Great atmosphere, fantastic lore, the gameplay is very good.
Let's just say it makes me feel that great feeling like when u first played a great game and u thought u would never have that feeling again....be ready to experience that feeling all over again lol.

Yes, the game is so good I can't even think straight lol.

Thanks, but now i'm even more impatient :)

It's so good I even dropped £10 on the companion world setting book, which can double as a roleplaying sourcebook :)

Is that Campaign Almanac? I am looking on GOG on differences between editions.

Hmmm. The blurb notes 11 classes, Chanter replaces Bard, and Cipher instead of Sorcerer.

*grumble-grumble*

Now I need to earn $35-45 quickly into may PayPal to get it...

Or is that Collector's Book, which in digital form is only part of Royal Edition... Nope. Not paying $70, sorry.

Scarab Sages

Its that Collectors book. It is quite good, I think between that book, the Almanac and the Guidebook, you could run more than one campaign in the PoE world, but I understand that $70 is a bit hard to chew...

I have spent 10 minutes sitting with GOG webpage open trying to decide between being frugal and getting Hero edition plus keeping the rest of my money on PayPal for DarkestDungeons or spending extra $10 and getting soundtrack and almanac offered by Champion edition...

I am afraid that I might spend many more minutes sitting here instead of deciding for one or another and starting download...

And ringtones, don't forget the ringtones.

Except I have my phone permanently set to mute and rely on vibrations to hear it. I could use a ringtone as an alarm bell, though.

I keep hearing that the combat is awful and your party members stand around doing nothing when they should be helping. Is this true?

No. In fact, the characters are pretty good at automatically engaging the next enemy once an enemy is killed, better than either the original BG games and certainly better than the recent DRAGON AGE ones.

Combat itself is pretty much the same as the Infinity Engine games, except that rather that using the D&D combat rounds, the game is fully in real time and 'turns' are limited by the characters' combat speeds, which vary depending on stats and the size and type of weapon they are using.

Just started. So far so good. I'd prefer my mind wave to knock down opponents more often, though. Also, it is quite irritating that you do not start the combat until the opponents notice you - so when I discover an enemy and cast a spell at him, the spell has no effect, but it does not consume the focus I have either.

Just started, female pale elf wizard. Everything is quite good but only level 2 so far, planning to play a lot this weekend :)

As for combat, i've a set a lot of events that activate the auto-pause so it constantly stops. Will surely shut off some auto-pause options once i've got better into game mechanics.

Sovereign Court

Pretty awesome thus far. Has that awesome BG feel.

Agreeing/backing up what Werthead says--although I have noticed sometimes if I issue a character a command to do something that is not attack and then forget to tell them to re-engage they just stand there. They do, if, for example, re-attack after casting a spell or something. It's just if I do something like tell them to "stand over here" and then I forget to issue a follow up command or cue commands with a shift key. They will generally auto-attack if attacked and if they are attacking something and it dies they will move to the next creature without my having to tell it.

I wish the AI were a little better but it's not awful either.

The only thing I don't like about combat is I feel like the health system is overly complex and I wish they just had hit points. But I also understand the slightly grittier/more realistic while still video-game-feasible system and why they chose it.

I have been playing for a while, and yes, you do really have to keep a constant eye on your party's actions to make sure they aren't just standing around doing nothing. I wish there was a more noticeable indicator to say whether someone's idle in combat.

I've also seen the party auto-attack other party members (usually after a confusion effect). I don't know if there is a de-target button. D:

Also,

I want PoE Cipher in Pathfinder. It's really cool and the abilities are wonderfully interactive. :D

The Cipher is a semi-combat class that spends 'Focus' to use psionic abilities, and recovers 1 Focus each time a hit is scored on an enemy. All of the Cipher's powers rely on external souls, and must target an ally or an enemy (never self). They often have different effects on the primary and secondary targets, such as Mind Wave: The primary target's soul erupts, causing them damage, and blasting out a cone of force that knocks down anyone behind them. It seems like all Cipher blast powers will discern between friend and foe, making them good for throwing into giant piles of melee.

Most of the other classes are almost directly comparable to PF classes.

The ones I've had in my party:

Wizard works like Arcanist. You prepare spells in a 'grimoire' and can cast X spells of each level per day. You can change out the prepared spells by swapping them in the grimoire, which has limited slots. Most of their spells seem to be 'blasty', and will do friendly fire. Careful positioning is key.

Chanter is a more interesting Bard. They string together 'verses' that can flow into each other, creating overlapping auras of buffs. After chanting enough verses, they can cast a powerful spell. They have no casting besides this, and tend to be a rather passive class.

Priest is Cleric. They get all their spells known at each level and can cast from them. They get an ability that is almost precisely 'channel energy'. It heals allies and harms undead. That's about it. Lots of heals and buffs, some single-target debuffs. Very little damage. I think each god grants a different combat talent (feat). The priest following me can get bonus accuracy with swords (meh) and arquebuses (awesome).

Fighter is Fighter. I've built one as a tank, with massive defenses and the ability to threaten more enemies. Unlike in PF, you can only make attacks of opportunity against a single target you are engaging in melee, and all others can move freely. A fighter can increase the number they can engage at once. Fighters can also knock down and probably other maneuvers in melee.

Ranger is Ranger. No spells, but has an animal companion and can do special attacks that hobble and bleed enemies, and make enemies take more damage from companion attacks. The pair seem to be about comboing with each other, adding effects that the other can exploit. The companion is also an 'infinite tank', as it does not use the health system and can be healed an unlimited amount per day. The ranger does become super sad (big attack penalties) when the companion is knocked out, though.

Normally, characters can only be healed up to X times their Endurance (hit points) per day, before having to rest. Wizards have a low multiplier, while front line types have a higher multiplier.

One I have heard some cool things about but not played is the Rogue. Melee rogue is apparently worthless. Instead, the ideal rogue gets hold of a blunderbuss as soon as possible and sneak attacks with it. The blunderbuss fires eight pellets, and 'on hit' abilities such as sneak attack apply to every pellet. That's terrifying.

Scarab Sages

The combat idleness is a bit annoying, but not near as bad as the pathfinding during combat. Ranged folks don't move out of 1 at a time doorways, so the two behind them sit idle until you manually move him to allow passage. Guys get stuck on other guys when trying to flank. Etc.

I like the convoluted HP system. Get the trait that lets you heal your own HP, though, its super handy.

Cipher all the way. I love that class.

I also am finding combat a bit tricky. Baldur's Gate had an AI that could be turned on/off, but at least you could tell your party members when to attack/follow fleeing enemies or not.
Haven't found a similar feature in PoE so far, i too have to constantly look at each party member to issue orders.
Also a bit upset by the beginning scene....the same for all classes/backgrounds/cultures.
Apart from these things am really enjoying the game.

Ranged rogues are hobbled by the fact that Sneak attack and related abilities only work close range--even if you're attacking with a ranged weapon you have to be fairly close to the enemy. Firearms load fairly slowly, too.

The key to sneak attack is it works whenever the enemy is not just surprised (start of combat) but when suffering a number of afflictions---and the rogue can also inflict such inflictions on an enemy. But I dont know if "hobbling strike" and the like work ranged (Ill test it out). My rogue is very effective with two weapons in melee, where with lighter armor she can strike quickly with two weapons, first hobbling the target, then dealing sneak damage with both weapons. Speed of atraxk is crucial. The only downside is she's a little wimpy in terms of taking damage and that's probably due to newb errors in figuring out how to divvy up stats, traits, etc.

Anyone who has trouble with melee rogues are probably the same kind of people who can't figure out how to flank in D&D/Pathfinder (also, flanking is important in POE too--although not requisite for sneak attack). Most of the power rogue builds I've seen are melee based.

ETA another problem with the blunderbuss thing is I'm level 4 and haven't found any. I've found one gun (a pistol) and Kana comes with an arquebus, which I let him keep.

Sovereign Court

Man, I'm glad I didn't equip anything by double clicking.

What does double-clicking on equipment do?

RPG Superstar 2015 Top 8

There's a bug where if you double-click on equipment in order to swap it out with something else, it wipes out your equipment bonuses. (Or something like that.)

Patch out next week hopefully will fix it.

Liberty's Edge

I don't find my chanter to be all that passive. Shot from his pistol and then close with sabre and stiletto while chanting while the fighter keeps the monster's attention, then magic every few chants.

I am encountering a wonderful problem with this game that I only bump into every now and then: my maximum party size is too small to accommodate all the characters that I like and want to bring with me.

Every NPC I've met so far is one I want to have in my party.

---

I started my first playthrough on Easy just to get a feel for the mechanics and such, learn how the health/endurance system works, how the stats and skills interact, and how the classes play.

Most combats are pretty tame for me (no surprise given the difficulty setting), but spectres and shadows give me no end of trouble. Their ability to teleport past my front line engagement wall (Eder & Pallegina at the moment) and into my back row to shred poor me (chanter) and Aloth is maddeningly excellent.

And there have been a few fights that triggered while I was caught out of position that just ended in total disaster. For the most part though, now that I'm level 8 and a little ways into Act 2, I'm feeling comfortable enough with the mechanics to bump up the difficulty a bit. Still, I doubt I'll ever attempt the hardest setting; I can only imagine how punishingly hard the Path of the Damned difficulty must be!

---

My main mis-step so far, and it's not even a major one, was my skill distribution. I just don't have anyone with a really high score in Mechanics and I'm finding that and Athletics to be the two skills I find most important. Athletics for everyone to ward off fatigue and at least one person with mechanics to handle ALL THE BAZILLION TRAPS AND LOCKS. I've abandoned pumping up Lore with my character and have been dumping all his points in mechanics to compensate, but it's still not quite high enough to be reliable.

---

All said and done, I'm loving Pillars. Absolutely loving it.

RPG Superstar 2015 Top 8

I hear you about the shadows and spectres, Dal Selpher. I don't mind the idea of the disengagement attack, but their teleporting ability makes the whole situation suck way too much, especially as they show up before you are likely to give your characters abilities that allow them to move or disengage safely. Aloth in particular doesn't have enough defenses starting off that makes him especially prone to their teleporting attacks--you can build him up later to help protect him against that. But I feel like since you can encounter these guys pretty early, they are more challenging than perhaps they were otherwise meant to be.

Liberty's Edge

Huh, I haven't had much issue with the ones I encountered below the church. Annoying, but not that hard.

I wonder if the mercenary Ranger and her Wolf are skewing that experience? Or maybe that my Chanter's in medium armor and slices and dices fairly well while waiting for Invocations to be ready?

Speaking as someone who wasn't certain either, I went with Champion edition and haven't regretted it. Looks like you already bought it anyway, but just my two cents for what it's worth.

That being said, and not to take away from this thread, but save up and go for Darkest Dungeon next. That's also turned out to be a pretty good Kickstarter funded game.

As for POE - just started one Sunday. Not much else I can add that isn't already said when it comes to the quirks of party mechanics so far. Otherwise, the game has been awesome (with a little bit of nostalgia from the BG/Icewind days).

Is that quest really a scam if I see it from afar and willingly walk into it?

I ventured to the bottom of the Endless Paths tonight.

I was not expecting to find at the bottom what I found.
I am glad I have the habit of quick saving as often as I do, because I definitely got one-shotted.

What an awesome side-quest. Very well done and very terrifying and I don't know when I'll be strong enough to try a go at the bottom floor. So devastating!

Sovereign Court

What level were your characters?

Level 10. I *just* got to Act III and realized, "I can get past that stupid door now! GO GO GO GO!"

If I'm not mistaken, the game caps at level 12, right? Or do I have a lot of leveling left yet?

12 is the cap.

it's impossible

What's the level range for Dyrford village and the surrounding area?

The patch is out! :D

But not for GoG. :(

Noticed it .....it is almost 12 hours i can't play because of the patch :(

I was going okay without any patches, being pretty careful to avoid the major bugs.

And...

Now my party (including main character) has permanent debuffs.

Also I wish it had a 'notify me when a character is idle in combat' toggle. There are notifiers for damn near every other possible event in combat.

Also also!

Blunderbuss with extra DR penetration plus the Penetrating Shot modal talent = Carnage. :D

RPG Superstar 2015 Top 8

The patch will retroactively fix that, Umbral Reaver. Hopefully GOG will finish its own patch vetting process soon (my understanding is they do their own tests on patches before they release them whereas Steam just uploads what's given to them by the developer immediately).

I tried the game for a few hours just now after the patch....only annoyance i noticed are axes that don't resize when transferred from the inventory of one char to the weapon slots....the stay oversized in the quickslot.

Patch is out for GOG. My debuffs are gone!

Ah, that ranks up there with Arcanum and such for me. A wonderful nostalgic trip into classic CRPG gaming.

I just reached Dryford. The party is complete but there is still at least one act - are there three or four total?

Three acts.

OK - so out of curiosity, how long would you say the game has taken you to play? Was this a straight-up only follow the main story kind of play ?

I am no where near done, but my pace has been slow to play. It always is with these types of games for me as I get distracted by side features and quests.

I have a feeling that it is rather short for its size (13.4 GB)...
