Implanting a cracked pearly white spindle ioun stone

Advice

Hello everyone, this is a probably brief ioun stone question and advice thread.

Ok, so the cracked pearly white spindle ioun stone gives on the ability to regenerate 1 hit point per hour. If successfully implanted and not cut out / off of the person its implanted in, does that mean one could eventually regenerate from hit-point death albeit over a lengthy amount of time?

Also, if you had such a stone implanted, where would you put it? Or more accurately, where would you hide it from the public? Can the ioun stone be implanted inside ones body and sewn over? Lastly, are there any other stones you would consider implanting if you had the choice?

There is an argument about whether or not the ring of regeneration or similar items actually grant you the regen special quality (which prevents death) or not.

I think in a world full of magic, people would at least use detect magic on corpses after killing them to ensure no magical auras were present.

Now, there are spells that could hide that magical aura, but still. It would require extra work to make sure it didn't get detected. Also, such actions might create a situation in which the victors of battle make certain to destroy all bodies after a battle, with something as simple as cremation.

They likely would check bodies for magic items on their persons if they had the body after the fight. If say, the party won after he was killed and was able to recover the body, the person may be fortunate enough to live... later (Since there's no official word on this, that'll be up to my DM, I guess.)

Destruction of dead bodies is also a smart move, that said, it'd also be a smart move to immediately sell or utilize their items upon confiscating them from any defeated enemy and most villains don't do that.

In any event, where would be some good places to hide them on body? Advice on other useful ioun stones to keep in their person?

To me, any Ioun Stone worth using is an Ioun Stone worth implanting if you can afford the costs (which are largely just having enough Cha, enough time, and access to someone with a high enough Heal skill, so it's not like it's much in the way of real resources).

If you're trying to 'hide' them, I'd go for places that are relatively unlikely to be classically searched; inner thighs and the like. Alternately, just walk up the spinal column. A simple Detect Magic is going to spot them no matter where they are though, so I don't see much point in concealment. Go for the flavor.

Grand Lodge

Under the hair and on the tongue are 2 spots a casual search could easily miss.

As for grafting over the implanted stones, I do not see why you couldn't. Unless you are encasing them in lead, the killer with detect magic is gonna find them.

The other stones I find useful implanted are the sustenance and no air needed ones (forgot the shape and color of them). They are ones you can still make great use of asleep, but do not want to risk being stolen as you sleep.

Of course, I would want to implant them all, just so I do not look like a model solar system.

I wonder if they'd still work if they were encased in lead. If they did, I wonder how much it'd cost to encase them in said lead. Hmmm...

Looking over it, it seems the pearly white likely doesn't save you from death, which is understandable. But auto stabilizing, healing over time and stopping bleeding seems decent.

However, not having to eat or breathe sounds like good stuff and healing over time might not be bad. In the campaign I'm going to be playing in, subtly is key so implanting may be the better method if I intend to use them. That or sticking them in a wayfinder and pocketing it. But, detect magic still will show that too.

If you're that concerned about detect magic, you need to just get a method of casting magic aura to mask them.

Otherwise, just accept that it may be used. It won't always be - after all, even adventurers forget to cast it sometimes. And it won't tell the caster exactly what effect you're getting from it. You can always bluff...

"Oh that? My priest gave me that to help keep me regular..."

there was a campaign in which magical artifact stones were used to achieve godhood, we inevitably got a few of them for a plot device, in character i secretly embedded a few in my arm to no effect... (We partywiped early on, though my character became a villain in another campaign, since his entire goal was to manipulate every possible situation to earning him noble status in multiple kingdoms so he could attempt to slice out his own empire through a strange combination of honor and greed)

but basically I used heal checks, a knife, disinfectant and a torch.
