The Big Book of Bloodlines is now on Kickstarter!

The Problem

With the advent of the bloodrager, the bloodline rules have gotten very restrictive. If a player ever wants to make a sorcerer/bloodrager, there's really no choice. If X sorcerer, then X bloodrager. While good for flavor's sake, it's not good for creativity, which is the primary pillar upon which 3rd-edition Dungeons and Dragons and the even more player-friendly Pathfinder Roleplaying Game are situated.

The Solution

The Big Book of Bloodlines is exactly what it says on the tin, a listing of 100+ sorcerer and bloodrager bloodlines designed to deepen and broaden the scope of flavor and mechanical conceits available to their associated classes.

Delving Deeper

The Big Book of Bloodlines delves deeper with subbloodlines. Unlike subdomains and alternate focused schools, a subbloodline is its own beast. Rather than swapping out one or two abilities, a subbloodline shares nothing but core theme with its parent and is a full-blooded (pardon the pun) bloodline with its own special mechanics, tricks, and flavor.

Why should such a thing exist? When rolling a multiclass sorcerer/bloodrager, a player must match bloodlines, but with subbloodlines, he is also granted the freedom to choose any two subbloodlines that are associated with the same parent bloodline. This expands build choice greatly.

Example Subbloodlines:

Undead - parent
-Banshee
-Lich
-Vampire
-Zombie

(Note: With the above design, there are 25 possible multiclass builds for an undead sorcerer/bloodrager, and five times as many distinct options for a non-multiclass individual.)

Awwwwwww yeah. First backer. :D

Awesome!

Grats on getting this started! Will toss for the basic soon as I can and hopefully more later.

Huge thanks to Veronica Ellis for being an insomniac and jumping on the bandwagon before there was a band, as well as to Geoffrey Eaton for being the first to commission a complex bloodline.

We're off to an excellent start, lads! Let's roll on over to $3,000 and start talking about Bloodlord archetypes, shall we? :)

Not an insomniac, just an Aussie. It was shortly after dinnertime for me. :P

I'll be spreading the news of this Kickstarter in my usual circles. Look forward to it funding!

As this isn't a class book and the primary funding level is 40% cheaper, it's going to take a much larger crew to get it across the finish line this time around. Any help is appreciated!

well i did my jumping of the bandwagon with the thing and the place.

Best of luck to you!!!

Jumping on the bandwagon? You, sir, ran up the price of the antique fingertrap you donated while kissing up your wife's neck.

Marc Radle wrote:

Thanks muchly, Marc! We're up to 25% on the first day, so I'm done wigging out. At the very least, we'll limp across the finish line like this, and that's more than good enough for something that was first conceived to push back another book and give my dear mother time to get well.

Verdant Wheel

i have a 2 players who might be interested in this (Sorcerer and Bloodrager) - how come there isn't a simple pledge that scores a single physical copy (rather than a coupon)?

and i made all the sounds to match.

Because it's cheaper for you AND less work for me.

Consider!

If you pay me up front for a physical copy, I pay Kickstarter/Amazon 10% on all of that, then the book ships to me, then the book ships to you.

By handing you a PDF and the option to have the physical book shipped directly to you, we remove the following from the equation.

1: The cost of shipping the book to me
2: The cost of packaging
3: The $1 or so I'd want for handling
4: 10% of print costs, plus 10% of the costs of 1, 2, 3 so Kickstarter/Amazon can be paid without me losing money on the transaction.

Depending on where you live, this drops the price of getting a book into your hands by anywhere from $5 to $5 + New Zealand postage.

It also allows the point of origination for each book to be in the US or the UK, depending on which is cheaper for each individual backer, rather than all of them sent to me and Europeans being shafted.

---

Alternate argument - pay for the book and have me have their system ship to you when it's ready.

Consider!

My Kickstarters are fairly unique in that I openly embrace feature bloat. I love it when a big backer comes in and makes the book 10% bigger. And I'd be perfectly fine with that happening ten times. The issue is that each backer like that increases the price of the book slightly. If I had an up-front print cost, each big backer would effectively reduce the profits made from each small backer, to the point that I would have to guess how big the book would get and charge accordingly.

For me, charging for what may never exist is disingenuous at best.

I'm in now. Let me know when there are more to look over if you want more feedback later!

Sure, sending you my gameplan. Thanks for your continued support!

I'm in on this. I was no 6 I also subscribed to Strange Magic through rpgnow a few months ago since I missed the kickstarter. So I was wondering how and when I will get the coupon for the print book, for Strange magic since we should be getting close. And if you know approximately how much will it cost. just so I can save enough in my RPG budget for it. Their are lots of goody's out their I want so it's hard to save. :)

@ladydragona: I'm the bottleneck, I fear. I'm cranking hard away at editing Ultimate Composition and Truenaming as I type this. UComp will be completed this week, my aim is to get Ultimate Truenaming done as fast as possible as well. Thing is, checking these books takes time and I want to make sure the final book is as good as it can possibly be. So yeah, once I'm done, the final coupons will arrive.

Cool I know what a perfectionist you are Endzeitgeist I read all your reviews. :)

@ladydragona: In addition to Thilo's editing, we also have a pair of etherslinger archetypes in the works after having been called out for having none in Ultimate Ethermagic. I'm not actually writing either of them; Jason Linker has one of them and Thilo here has the other, and even then I've only seen one draft of Jason's. Even then, up until yesterday, I was still waiting on two backers to get back to me so I know what to do with the NPC Codex. Still waiting on one. For my part, since all of these blockers to completion are staring straight at me, I really haven't done all that much to Strange Magic in the last few weeks and have instead been putting my effort into schemes that I haven't really been able to do up since that Kickstarter became a thing that exists. Rest assured that the final PDF will be ready to go within a week or so of me getting the last piece I need, and the book soon thereafter.

A print edition of Strange Magic looks like it will run somewhere in the vicinity of $14 + shipping.

Just as an update for ladydragona and everyone else interested: I got UComp done; Etehrbomber will be finished this week (at the latest next week), next week Ultimate Truenaming edits will probably be finished as well. :)

Etherbomber Archetype done. Only Ultimate Truenaming edits left. :)

Backed! I can't Argue with $15 to get tons of new bloodlines AND help out a small publisher.

It also helps that you have been very public with the fact that the book is pretty much written, so there's not going to be LONG delays in fulfillment.

Silver Crusade

Looking forward to the book of bloodlines and the whole compilation of Strange Magic. I should be saving $20.00 now!!!

As for "calling out the no etherslinger archetypes"...I just call them how I see them. I think it is good that there are at least 1 etherslinger archetype going into Strange Magic, and I appreciate that you listen to your fans.

Looking forward to having both books be part of my regular campaigns in the near future.

I'm a fan of strange magic and your other subsystems, but the whole sorcerer bloodline thing never really grabbed me. Hence, I didn't pay much attention to this when you announced it earlier.
However, I read the description of complex bloodlines and realized I was sorely mistaken. I am now officially BACKED!
And I will be really disappointed if this isn't funded.
Do you mind if I plug for this kickstarter over on the Giantitp.com forums?

Certainly, Ben! You can plug all you want. If the actual publisher plugs, the banhammer drops over there.

Thank you Endzeitgeist really looking forward to it. :)

Etherbomber's going for another iteration. I know it's almost corporate blasphemy for me to say it, but there was simply too much going on.

Class Features:

Ethermagic - lesser blast, alteration, bestow
Etherslinger Talents - modified list, plus new abilities and access to bomb discoveries
Etherbombs
Alchemist Bombs
Grit

What I want to do:

Remove lesser blast. Add a blast manifestation slot to etherbombs.

What will actually happen:

???

Not to worry, though, his core design is actually quite fantastic and this should be a simple cut and suture affair.

VERY excited about how the etherslinger's archetypes are going to pan out. The ether/gunslinger is going to have ether/alchemist and ether/halfling rock-skipping champion for archetypes.

To bring everything back on track for The Big Book of Bloodlines, however, I am sending out an OBS ad tomorrow.

In addition, I am toying with the idea of dropping the Bloodlord to base funding rather than $3,000, but only if I get the support of at least two people who would like to back the project at a $75 "have me write archetypes for them" level.

You got a class with four bloodlines. This is your best shot ever at driving me utterly mad!

Sighs, it is times like this I wish I actually had money.

It's times like these that I wish you had money, too.

Of course, the wish would be less convoluted if it were just sitting here right next to me in nonsequential small bills and/or bullion.

Just to clarify are all the bloodlines from your class expansions: Bloodrager bloodlines going to be in this?

No, actually. It's all brand new content. They'll be listed in the back with other 3pp bloodlines with parents assigned.

How about making it an add-on then? I would buy it.

Huh, didn't think of that. Would you also be interested in Purple Duck's 30-some monstrous bloodlines? I can go ask.

I already have the ones by purple duck. That being said maybe the others in the kickstarter don't so it could bring in some more money.

Wouldn't exactly bring in money if it's going to another guy, plus 10% more to the machine.

If it is not in the book and it is all new content, I wouldn't mind throwing a couple extra bucks towards Bloodrager bloodlines

Was thinking $3 for the bloodrager bloodlines product and all three of my sorcerer bloodlines products. Disclaimer: most of the sorcerer bloodlines are old design. You'll see the comparative dearth of experience at work.

Gave a shout out for this on my Facebook, and in a gaming group I've created just for things like this.

I will likely back it this weekend! :)

This week is really important for me work-wise.
If it goes well, I'd be happy to grab an add-on, and/or upgrade to the $40 level.

If you mean you are expanding on the PDG bloodlines with sub/complex bloodlines, then yes, that interests me.

I meant chatting with PDG to get them in on the bloodline action with their products on offer. Signs point to this diluting the pot too much, though. It's the sort of thing to do afterward.

I am interested in picking up your bloodrager bloodlines product & the 3 sorcerer bloodlines ones as well (as soon as I see the add-on available). The fact that I didn't know about them means I'm going to have to take a closer look at your back catalog. I do have 2 questions though. First will the ones from the sorcerer bloodlines be added to the list in the back? Second did you mean that it would be $3 for all those PDF or $ 3 each?

Alright, Mr. Griffin. I've gone and done what you wanted. You can pay $3 to add all four of Interjection Games' old bloodline products to your order, and all 25 of my old bloodlines will have parents assigned in the back of The Big Book of Bloodlines. For comparison's sake, these products are normally $6.50 when picked up separately!

That said, please be aware that 4 of the 25 bloodlines are coming from a source very near the genesis of Interjection Games. I've gotten better since then, and it will show.

Also of note is the ridiculous generosity of Jonathan Nelson of Adventure A Week Games. All backers at the Blood Brother ($15) level or higher will get a FREE 1-month subscription to AdventureAWeek.com. This translates to web access to their entire back catalog and the ability to permanently download up to two adventure PDFs of your choice.

I only ask that you download the gory adventures to keep the blood theme going. :)

Well I just upped my pledge $3 & I hope a lot of other people will as well.

I promise I won't hold your earlier work against you. To be honest reviews of it show few rules problems & the ideas behind them just drip with flavor & awesome. That's the main reason I'm putting money up for your kickstarter in the first place. You have a history of coming up with really interesting stuff (& you listen to what people have to say).

Silver Crusade

I also increased my pledge by $3.00.

Bumped my pledge, as well.

Herald of the Bloodlord - At this level, your pitched concept or idea becomes an archetype for the bloodlord base class! If both slots are filled, the bloodlord stretch goal will be added to The Big Book of Bloodlines at base funding. (If both slots are not filled, we'll talk and get you a partial refund.) You also receive the benefits of the Blood Donor level.

Blood Donor is an add-on, not a level. Is this supposed to be Blood Brother, or does it mean you get both Blood Brother and the Blood Donor add-on?

...Aye, that could have been described better, couldn't it?

Yes, it means a Herald of the Bloodlord gets Blood Brother with the Blood Donor addon. I'll FAQ that a little later.

Well what do you know, 2 of the kickstarters I'm in have gotten the free month from adventure-a-week. I wonder if that means I get 2 of them? Hopefully this will help drive things over the top.

It's pretty much a sure thing at this point, my good man. Historically, the organic Kickstarter backers flood into these project in the last 10 days, and they end up being about 40-50% of the take of small games projects like this. At this point, I'm expecting an absolute floor of about $2,100.

Of course, one fact that leaves me nervous is the lack of angel-level backers on this one. This book has one so far. Strange Magic had eight, and then lost two to cancellations before closing. If anything, The Big Book of Bloodlines is showing grassroots rather than a top-heavy, and the fact that it is working with the base level being $10 cheaper is a win in and of itself.
