Miniatures Suggestions..?

Iron Gods

Greetings to one and all!

As most of you reading this forum thread, I'm excited to begin Iron Gods and experience the epic odyssey it will surely be.

I've been elected to GM this campaign for our group, and the material in the book sounds amazing! The biggest problem I'm having is finding miniatures to represent things properly. It's a shame to have all these amazing encounters to present to my players, but not bringing that visual punch to the tabletop; or worse, using inadequate substitutes that detract from the presentation.

I'd like to know what everyone is doing to adequately represent the odd enemies in this adventure path. Hopefully this thread can grow and continue as the subsequent books are released and new enemies appear.

Personally, I'm a skilled miniature modeller/painter, and don't mind if I need to do a little modding or painting. That being said, I'd rather avoid it if possible, as my window of time to do such things is rather small. Also, I realize that most other people are not inclined to work on such things, and that table-ready options are still the best (or only) option.

Alright, enough preface! What minis are people using out there?

* I was thinking of going over the available pieces from the Star Wars Miniatures line for most of the robots and anybody using guns.

* The "Thorn" figure from D&D Mnis: Angelfire series would make good vegepygmies.

* The Kasatha are going to be tricky. The best option I could find were Reaper Miniatures' Kulathian Invaders, and even they need their faces and weapons modded out. Any ideas for the skeletons?

* There's a decent looking kuo-toa from D&D Minis Harbinger set that could be used for the blindheim, but it's carrying a spear. Any better options? The Giant Frog from Deathknell?

* Pallid Path Cultist from Shattered Star for the skulks. Anything else that could be suitable?

*Shattered Star also had the Clockwork Soldier, and there is a multitude of Warforged from all of the previous D&D Miniatures series.

I would love to hear your ideas and suggestions!

I've had the same problem - none of my minis are SWMinis, so I lack robots. I can help with the blindheim, though. I had to find a suitable mini for a PFS mod, and I think a Nothic from the Archfiends set works pretty well.

I have about $1000 worth of star wars minis i bought from all the targets and walmarts in the vegas valley when wizards stopped producing them and they went on sale. so hopefully ill have most everything covered.

I posted some minis for sale a while ago that may be appropriate. I haven't read all of Iron Gods so I don't have specific suggestions, but here you go: link

Sean you are one of my heroes and have been since I played 3.5 when I started. Just wanted to say that.

Awww, thanks. :)

Bookmarked, I will keep watch for it. You know when this month it will be up?

With a little bit of modification, the WH40K Necron Triarch Stalker would make a great Annihilator.

The Canoptek Wraiths seem useful too.

I believe I'm planning for a Sep 16 launch (I have a note about it on my computer).

WONDERFUL!!!

I kind or perfer low levels to mid levels (level 2 or 3 to 8 or 10) but from what I understand lot of people think the sweetspot is around level 7. Although I always assumed the “sweet spot” meant level 6 to 8 or level 10, but 12 makes sense. All full casters have 6 level spells, full BAB classes have their 3 attacks and you get your 3 ability point. I personally think the game begins to break apart around level 12, but I’m well aware that is just an opinion.

The things you suggest is just what I and my friends have been waiting for. A simpler game where characters are less dependent upon their gear to survive and succeed.

The “Elevate martial characters to have parity with spellcasters, but still maintain fun and distinct flavor for each class” also sound very nice. In fact everything you list sounds great.

Is this Kickstarter only for North America or can we in Europe join in as well?

The kickstarter campaign will be Europe-friendly (KS has gotten better about handling international shipping charges, so it's not such a hassle for the project creator).

That´s a good thing and about time. I think there are enough kickstarting people all over europe. Sometimes the shipping fees on kickstarter are just ridiculous. I´ve seen ranges from 5$ to 50$ for things that are approximately the same size and weight. That kept me from participating more often than not.

Another thing you can do is make your own paper minis.

You need a drawing program, preferably one with a grid guide, a color printer, and cardstock.

I'd recommend buying at least one set of Pathfinder paper minis as a guide to what size you should draw them. You can snag the monster or NPC graphics out of the AP or Bestiary PDFs, then paste them in. Draw rectangles around them off an an appropriate size, and then put half-circles beneath them. Select the monster, rectangle, and half-circle, group them, then flip horizontal. Position so they are touching. Then draw an appropriate sized circle as a base. When you have the sheet filled with minis, print onto card stock. Cut out the minis and their bases, score on the folds, fold, and glue then together.

I use Microsoft Visio, but plenty of other graphic software would work.

Shadow Lodge

Yeah, that's what I did. I have PDFs of the Bestiary pawns and used a page of them as a guide to make my own. Its really nice actually having a pawn for the exact thing.

You might check Privateer Press for some stuff. Their new Convergence line are all robotic, so they may have some things you might find interesting.

Also Infinity may have a few models to represent Technomancer characters, or some of the more advanced and high-tech members of the Technic League. I'm a player so I don't know what all you might need, but I know Infinity has some cool Power Armor and weapons which fit the theme.

I got nothin for the Kasatha. 4-armed creatures are harder to come across.

Space Marines board game has some suitable models (and mechs)

Red Box Games has amazing barbarians and with the new kickstarter there come some more. I think those serve pretty well for the kellid numerians.

Now that all 6 parts of the campaign are out, does anyone have any updates on what minis they used / will use?

I actually picked up the Iron Gods pawns, something I had never done before, simply because some of the creatures are so bizarre and alien.

If pawns aren't your thing, some of the Eberron age D&D sets have warforged that make for good Gearsmen. Larger robots are going to be harder.

Ditto. I used the pawns. If you can afford it I would actually grab two copies as some of the non-named enemies fall short.

I have incomplete lists made up for the first three adventures. I have several Star Wars minis and have chosen several droids to stand in for the various robots. They aren't perfect by any means, but I as GM will be the only one really concerned, so good enough for me is fine for my players. They will only really care about their individual character minis anyway. If I find time in the next couple of days, I may post what I have chosen so far through The Choking Tower.

Nobody has mentioned it yet (unsurprisingly) but for the Overlord Robot, I've resigned myself to using the Clockwork Reliquary. (I wanted to save it for Shattered Star...)

Do you not have the pawns?

Nothing against the pawns, but I prefer minis since I have so many. I just like suggestions for things I might not have thought of yet. Two of the players in my group have decent collections, too, so I should be able to find what I'm looking for.

I was actually asking Kalindlara just forgot to use her name, I love your use of star wars minis:-)

I haven't been buying cases of minis since Harbinger to use pawns. :)

Although I will be dipping into the Star Wars minis (which I also have, yes) pretty heavily for this campaign.

In fact... time to cyborg out a kasatha.

I bought the Iron Gods Pawns as soon as they came out :-)

I still only have the first Bestiary box, but I have all the Adventure Path Pawns :-)

Also brilliant idea using the clockwork reliquary as a stand in for what's his face's robot :-)

Truly smurftastic :-)

I'm working on a Cybernetics Doctor, any case anyone in my party is interested

Doc Ockt, CN Female Kasatha Vivisectionist Alchemist, the plan is to set her up in Hajoth-Harkados :-)

I did use a Necron Spyder for Hellion. I thought that works well. And one of the characters in my game - a laser rifle wielding, ceramite armour wearing android - uses a warhammer 40k guardsmen. Everyone else is strictly fantasy.

I basically use narrative combat for most battes - no need for minis there.

For complex battles (more than 3 things to keep track of) I use zones to track locations and terrain affects. Basically index cards with some descriptive text. An example would be Seerath and her 8 bodyguard androids + terrain + potentially the oozes.

Finally, for boss fights I use full blown minis and battle maps.

I did this as well (#yoink from Solomani), and I didn't regret it. It was a very nice mini for the PCs to fight, though I do lament the lack of scorpion tail.

EDIT: also a bit expensive for my taste, but I feel boss fights warrant a little extra effort.

Yeah, GW tax :)

So what are folks using for the annihilators? I thought maybe a Transformers Skorponok figure would work well, though I don't know if its in stores right now or if its gargantuan size. I was going to use the Exosquad Amphibious Assault E-frame figure, but its pretty much colossal size.

One of my players acquired a Skorponok figure from the Transformers movie and graciously donated it to his appreciative GM. Now I just have to decide whether to increase Hellion's size or use it for an annihilator robot later on.

Has anyone compiled a list of which PF Battles sets include the creatures for this AP? I don't use pawns and would like to pick up what singles I can before I resume my campaign with Valley of the Brain Collectors. I do understand that there aren't any robots in any sets that I am aware of.

After a search of the website, it looks like they are mostly in pawn form. I found a gug, but the mi-go and intellect devourer (D&D minis) are unavailable. There are a couple in the Reaper metal minis like Meyanda and the Technic League Captain, so those are an option. There really aren't any more for Valley of the Brain Collectors.
