Be it a dedicated mount or a special occasion.

The Exchange

Mmmmmm, probably pegasus. Given just those two options. I'm ordinarily a griffon fan.

Unicorn.

pegasus

but but both screams sound more like a high pitched excited squeal to me accompanied by frenzied clapping and jumping up and down in place

Silver Dragon! :D

Of those two, however, I'd vote Pegasus. Can never go wrong with a flying mount IMO

That depends on the... virtue of the Paladin I suppose.

Seriously though, I think unicorn speaks to the purity of the master and pegasus says "Dude, I've got freaking wings. Prepare for awesome!".

I'd probably go with the pegasus.

Alicorn! Because why not both?

Actually I prefer unicorns as mounts, but I don't think either is particularly more paladin-esque than the other.

Pegasus.

It's far more righteous.

As a unicorn will only allow maidens to even touch it, my vote is on the Pegasus.

+1 for griffon, though!

Ruyan.

Not all paladins are virgins. He could be a happily married paladin. So Pegaus or something else, defintely not a Unicorn.

Choosing between the two, I would think Pegasus. If I had my choice, I would say white half-celestial rhinoceros.

Pathfinder unicorns don't have to restrict their circle of friends to virgins. Although those who choose to associate with non-virgins get a lot of peer pressure from other unicorns, who refer to him or her as "a tramp." (I'm sure this will all be brought up when Paizo gets around to doing a monster ecology on unicorns.)

I vote Alicorn as well.

Only if the unicorn uses it's gore attack at which point the rider would be an impale-adin.

For clarity: "They universally shun all creatures except for good-aligned fey, good-aligned humanoid women, and the woodlands' native animals, though they may fight alongside other good creatures against common enemies...On rare occasions, lone unicorns without mates or whose partners have been slain have been known to adopt young women of exceptionally pure virtue as surrogates, allowing the women to ride on their backs and becoming their guardians and protectors for life. This bond generally ends amiably if the woman becomes more committed to someone else—such as a lover or child—giving rise to the myth that unicorns only befriend virgins."

So promiscuous paladins of Arshea can totally ride a unicorn as long they're women for whatever reason. Removing the Virgin=Pure thing is fine because of Paizo's commitment to gender equality but it also removes the reasoning behind why unicorns only like women.

As to the OP's question, a winged steed just seems more heroic. so yeah +1 vote for the Pegasus.

Pegasus for a man
Unicorn for a woman

I think I see the reason for the whole Unicorn-women thing

A horse comrade!. A good horse that comes from a line of hard working plough horses. Paladins of the people do not need the ostentatiousness of a magical beast but rather the down to earth loyalty of a working beast. Power to the Proletariat!

Maybe I'm old school, but I agree with this! Particularly if the Paladin is a virgin and an elf.

Pegasus. You can recreate the unicorn effect with some barding and a steel spike.

I can't imagine any Paladin (man or woman) on a Unicorn unless they were part of the Order of My Little Pony.

Maybe PF has reskinned unicorns to try to make them cooler, but the only thing I picture is sparkles and rainbows and the like when it comes to unicorns. I don't think you could ever run out of ball-busting material if one of your fellow Players chose unicorn as a mount.

Why settle for halfway measures? I'll go with the winged celestial unicorn!

On a serious basis though, what the unicorn is to me is the announcement that it's rider is a virgin.

Because nothing says "sparkles and rainbows" like a giant freaking spike on your head that gores your enemies.

Whatever you choose, make sure to use a saddle.

It depends on the paladin. More fragile, or otherwise more Fey-like motifs would work well with a Unicorn, while the more traditional Paladin works better with a Pegasus or Griffon. I DO like the idea of a Paladin riding a Warg, though, with the intention of redeeming him.

You should read more Pathfinder Tales, then... One of them includes a pretty badass Paladin on a equally badass Unicorn.

Nothing like a demon scarred unicorn with deep emotional issues and semi-racist elven paladin to firmly declare "We did unicorns first, they're still badass, and we're taking them back".

I'd say Alicorn, but honestly I prefer a monster-level thoroughbred warhorse.

Even if they (unicorn and rider) sometimes make the reader (or maybe, just me) want to punch them in the face. ;)

BTW, I still think gryphons make cooler mounts for Paladins (and non-Paladins too, actually).

Unicorns.

Are.

BADASS.

As much as PF has probably tried to reflavor unicorns and even if they attached a Chuck Norris Chainsaw to the Unicorn's head, it's pretty hard to change the image of something that reminds you of a 4 year old girl's teaparty. It would be like trying to make a post-Apocalypse Carebears movie.

To be fair, at least IMO, the 2nd one is not badass, it's just well-groomed. The 3rd one doesn't count because it has Robocop riding it. Robocop can make pretty much anything look badass!

The moral I'm taking from it is there's no accounting for taste. >:)

Actually, taste is entirely why I chose Pegasus for a Paladin.

Unicorns taste so delicious, that why would you *ride* one when you could be munching on a steak of one?

The Exchange

I prefer a dragon.

I had that feeling too. I've never want to punch an elven maiden and a unicorn before or since reading that book, but I think I actually said out loud at one point "This unicorn's an @$$!".

The people in the booth next to me seemed a little confused and concerned....

That being said, I do believe in badass unicorns, but I'd still choose a pegasus.

I think the answer would be whichever one you can more easily convert to lawful good (by default, both are chaotic good).
