Interesting mechanical incongruities

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

So, recently a friend of mine in a game where I was playing crafter wanted me to craft him a ring of wizardry. I started wondering if it was worth it, since i've always relied on pearls of power. So I did some analysis:

-
-
-
SL RoW PoP Ratio RoP Ratio
1 20 1 20 2 10
2 40 4 10 8 5
3 70 9 7.78 18 3.89
4 100 16 6.25 32 3.125

SL stands for spell level, RoW stands for ring of wizardry (with price), PoP stands for pearl of power, and RoP runestone of power. Ratio gives the price ratio between the ring & the item.. As you can see, it takes 20 PoPs to account for the cost of a single ring of wizardry. And since no prepared spellcaster gets more than 5 spells per day base (since RoW do not double stat & school boost) it is pretty much never worth it for prepared spellcasters. Even the slight advantage of being able to prepare a wider variety of spells, the massive ratio is hard to overcome.

However it IS worth it for spontaneous ones, because of the increased cost of RoP vs PoP. So, for my own games, I am renaming the ring of wizardry as the ring of sorcery.

So has anybody else seen other incongruities? Little things that seem to be intent for one class, but work MUCH better for another? I await your input...

It's only ever as high as 4 spells for the wizard because specialty schools aren't doubled. And in either case they are WAY better than pearls of power. Pop requires you to 1) retrieve the item 2) use the item 3) stow the item (unless you just intend to drop your magic bauble on the ground like a hooligan).

Rings of Wizardry just give you more slots, available all day, right now, and in a hurry.

Also, I find that there are many items which are better for characters that can make better use of them, like every item in the game.

My slotless pearl of power earrings beg to differ

The standard action still applies.

One that bugs me: If you've got a high strength, a suit of plate armor will slow you down less if you're carrying it than if it's being worn.
