Advice

1 person marked this as a favorite.

We love spontaneous casters around here and this one (created by my lovely wife for a campaign she will never get to play in), struck me as an ideal 'optimized build' for relatively new players, or rather, for players relatively new to casters. She's not an offensive powerhouse, nor does she ratchet up ridiculously high DC's for 'save or suck's, but she is incredibly versatile and really serves as a fantastic introduction to the ins and outs of casting, and offers up some fun tricks along the way.

The character starts off with a full Animal Companion (our example was torn between a bear and a wolf) and eventually adds a faerie dragon as a familiar. She has the versatility of being able to apply meta-magic feats on the fly (we have disallowed Dazing Spell in our campaign but I included it here rather than presume other campaigns have done the same). Due to Dazing spell being part of the build, the DC bonuses were put in Evocation, but switching around the meta-magic feats and Spell Focus feats allow for plenty of customization should one want to focus more on Transmutation or Enchantment or whatever.

The best thing about this character (in my opinion) is the truly massive number of spells known. Assuming the character takes an extra hit point the first three levels (rather than learning bonus cantrips), these will be the bonus spells she knows, listed cumulatively, above and beyond the normal Sorcerer allotment:

4th +1 1st
5th +2 1st
6th +2 1st, +1 2nd
7th +2 1st, +2 2nd
8th +2 1st, +2 2nd, +1 3rd
9th +2 1st, +2 2nd, +2 3rd
10th +2 1st, +2 2nd, +2 3rd, +1 4th
11th +2 1st, +2 2nd, +2 3rd, +2 4th
12th +2 1st, +2 2nd, +2 3rd, +2 4th, +1 5th
13th +2 1st, +2 2nd, +2 3rd, +2 4th, +2 5th, +1 6th
14th +2 1st, +2 2nd, +2 3rd, +2 4th, +2 5th, +2 6th
15th +2 1st, +2 2nd, +2 3rd, +2 4th, +2 5th, +3 6th, +1 7th
16th +2 1st, +2 2nd, +2 3rd, +2 4th, +2 5th, +3 6th, +2 7th
17th +2 1st, +2 2nd, +2 3rd, +2 4th, +2 5th, +3 6th, +3 7th, +1 8th
18th +2 1st, +2 2nd, +2 3rd, +2 4th, +2 5th, +3 6th, +3 7th, +2 8th
19th +2 1st, +2 2nd, +2 3rd, +2 4th, +2 5th, +3 6th, +3 7th, +3 8th, +1 9th
20th +2 1st, +2 2nd, +2 3rd, +2 4th, +2 5th, +3 6th, +3 7th, +4 8th, +1 9th

Of course, my wife's favorite thing about the character is her pets.

If you ever have any players who would really like to run a magic-wielding fey-themed character who's well built but not optimized to a cheese level, this might be a character worth considering.

Liberty's Edge

Nifty... but I don't think you can use the FCB to get 9th level spells, always has to be one level lower than max I believe.

K

The 9th level spell is coming from expanded arcana.

Liberty's Edge

Ah, gotcha... I was scratching my head over that one.
