Coords on New Map

I was going to add a system of coordinates drawn onto the current map to make it easier to discuss. Any ideas? Vertical is easy, assigning a value to horizontal mapping is kicking my butt. I have a few ideas, but they seem over complicated. I've never worked with hexes.

I don't want to add negative numbers for this map since it's just the starter map and will change.

One method is to just offset the numbers on each column. (This assumes you want the system for identifying the hexes, not for measuring distances.)

0101 ---- 0301 ---- 0501
---- 0201 ---- 0401 ----
0102 ---- 0302 ---- 0502
---- 0202 ---- 0402 ----

You might look at other Piazo hex maps for ideas.

I'm fairly certain Harad Navar is already working on it. You might send him a PM and see if y'all can coordinate.

The hexes have numbers now. I'll poke Lee or someone to post how they're numbered.

The NW hex of Thornkeep is 00 00.

The first number goes up or down as you go East or West. For example, the column of hexes two west of Thornkeep's 00 00 are all -02 ##.

The second number goes up or down as you go South or North. For example, the hex two north of Thornkeep's 00 00 is 00 -02.

The second number zigzags a bit. The high point of the zigzag for a single numerical "row" is on the even columns (e.g., -08 -02 is NE of -09 -02, then -07 -02 is SE of that one, back on line with -09 -02).

So for example:

  • The three Thornkeep hexes are 00 00, 00 01, and 01 00.
  • H is -09 -02
  • I is -05 -02

If that's not enough to fill out the rest, I'll try to field additional examples :) .

Thanks Stephen. The map with updated hex numbers will be out shortly.

Probably even sooner than the one I'm working on...
