15 point buy orc, 22 str... what do?

Advice

1 to 50 of 103 << first < prev | 1 | 2 | 3 | next > last >>

So i've dropped all my mental stats down, and pushed my str up to 18 (22 with racials)

What should I do with this?

Con and dex are both at fourteen

I'm pretty sure my party is going to be evil, but my guy is going to be so stupid that I can pretty much get away with any alignment

*edit*

Int, Charisma, and Wisdom are all at 5

Play against type and be a rogue.

Go here and download the Clod class. Now your intelligence penalties are bonus and you can pick locks by smashing them with your head :)

Wis 5? Honestly, i hope your party kills you off before you kill them. Who has 5.wis?

So you have an int,wis and chr of 5
How would a character that dumb and socially backward survive childhood especially among orcs he would be so easy to trick he would never live long enough to become an adventurer

You really need a way to make up for that terrible Will Save. Otherwise you will be fine grabbing a Two-Handed Weapon and smashing things

Barbarian with Superstition might at least keep you alive.

The only other possibilities with these stats are Figther and Rogue(with Sap Master feat Line and bludgeoner for a two-handed weapon), though you will be really vulnerable to charm spells.
If you can talk your fellow players into casting Protection from Alignment on you regularily you can still be a powerful party member.

In both cases rock a Two-Handed Weapon and Power Attack.

If you have a crafter or can freely buy magic Items: Get a Wayfinder and a clear Spindle Ioun Stone(if it works against nonevil alignments I'm not shure RAW) ASAP. From then on it should really work better.

If it won't work get a Wand of Protection from Alignment for your casters and have them cast it on you.

Str 22 that's how.

-5? I thought you could only go back to -7 with point buy... That would be horribly stupid to do.

He gets -2 on all mental stats for playing an Orc.

Yeah. -3 on your will save and 1 or 2 skill points a level... You're not even going to be useful in combat.. You'll fail any enchantment effect.

He wouldn't have 22 str until an adult where as his mental abilities would prevent him ever getting that old as he would be to dumb realise when he's in danger it's Darwin 101 90% of the time brains trump strength

I always found it hard playing a character with stats under 10... You won't be useful for any skill checks besides strength based. perception, knowledge, bluff, intimidate.... worthless unless you metagame.

-3 is not as bad as people think it is for the purpose of actual correlation to real life. However the penalty to will saves is doing to do him or his party in unless the GM is really nice.

22 str, 5 int wis char, orc...
Sounds like a monster to me, i hope you figure out a way to get inside towns or make friends.

Maybe he grew upo in some fighting pit as a gladiator, never learned to talk, act wisely or got any higher education.

Maybe he was a slave working in a mine or something. Who would kill such a gullible hard working tool off?

Maybe he had some physically weak, but pretty clever companion, who knows having a brawny kid around will him to be protect him from his bullies.

There are lots of possibilities why such a guy could have survived even in a society like the orcish one.

Let him be a inv. Rager barbar. Give him the adopted trait and the well informed( halfling race trait) and skill focus( knowledge local)
And make him neutral good.
Glowing up among homely halflings gave Binbo Fraggins a happy childhood. But still the retardet orc would somtimes fly into a terrible rage and as he grew and his strength out grew his brains. His poor halfling parants were forcer to send him away on adventure.
He is a perfectly physical specimen with the mind of a uncharming 5 year old. Perfect and Lots of fun to play.
Also works with gnomes and the animal friend trait:)
And how to make a child uncharming? Make him big, ugly and give him a running nose.

Even a gladiator needs enough common sense to know when his apoinent is trying to trick him
A slave who's that strong and dumb would never be let go
A smart friend maybe but he would still be a liability in anything except combat and even then he would be unable to grasp anything but the simplest of tactics
But mostly i think stat dumping that much is bad form at best and powergaming at worst

This has barbarian written all over it.

That's what teammates are for. Yeah, he's going to be a one trick pony ... but it's gonna be one hell of a trick.

In my experience, a character with a notable weakness or low stat tends to be more memorable than Joe Average.

I couldn't agree more. What would Raistlin or Elric have been without their low constitutions?

Ilja wrote:

I hope somebody kills him off before he reproduces. Could be after the campaign though, all things depending.

Man, I remember a time when a bad roll at character generation meant you had to suck it up and play that character with 6 or so in an ability score.

And now, for some reason, wanting to play with that same kind of handicap is seen as powergaming and other such "awful" things.

And yes, a statdump IS a handicap. That low wisdom of course means low will-saves (both from enemies AND players), that low intelligence means only a single skill point per level, and the low charisma is likely going to end up meaning that orc will be boned in most any social environment.

Gee, It would suck to have to play such a character in a vacuum with no support from other characters, right? And that's of course the only way you'd be playing such a character, without any backup ever!

Idk it MUST be 22 Str? 20 means you could be not as much of a liability...

My thoughts exactly deanar he could have 20 strength which is still a great stat and not totally kneecap himself mentally and ice no problem with someone wanting to play a character with low stats if they make the character interesting
But when someone gives themselves low stats just to pump one stat to its max seems pointless

Nah I think i've figured it out, this guy thinks he's a wizard. He uses his magical "wand" (Axe) to cast 'Spells' which 'sunder' or... 'silence' enemies >.>

As in he's so friggin stupid he thinks he's a wizard when he has an axe

tony gent wrote:

That is unless he just.... didn't die yet?

I'm really not expecting this guy to live long, i'm trying to make a fun character to play to his ultimately untimely death. early game has always been boring to me, I call it the pit of infinite badness.

He had a smart "friend" who was using his strength, but also took care of him in return.

For added sweetness make him a Greenskin Orc.

tony gent wrote:

He'd still have 16 Str, higher than his 12-14 Str brethren.

And since Orc society is "Survival of whoever can beat the s!%@ out of people the hardest", he'd be doing just fine.

At the very WORST some smarter Orc would manipulate him into doing his dirty work for him. Nobody's going to willingly squander the Human Wrecking Ball over there in a society where might makes right.

So, people are saying the Hulk should have died a long time ago? Because that's basically what this guy is.

Orcs =/= Orks.

This guy has nothing going for him, person-wise, because he's really not a person.

Dog:
Int 2, Wis 12, Cha 6

Sure, low Intelligence. Dogs can't count, can't talk, and can't understand complicated gestures. Your guy might be able to understand a very small vocabulary (I'd do something like pick 20 words and that's it).

But look at the Wisdom... dogs don't know what fire is but they understand it's hot. They understand things that things that smell bad will make them sick if they eat it. They understand that crapping on the carpet will make Master angry. They're... clever. Your guy is none of that. No common sense. He's not going to understand cause-and-effect. He's not going to understand why people don't like him, or why they are doing the things they do, or why they are angry when he won't flank, or help pull them up from over a cliff, or any of the other things a dog would be clever enough to just... understand.

Then the Charisma. Six. 'Cuz while (some) dogs are cute, they don't inspire anyone to follow them. They're pets at best, and food at worst. They're good for pulling sleds, and aren't allowed to make decisions.

So your guy... is deeply stupid, deeply incapable of understanding the consequences of his stupidity, and has a deep lack of redeeming personality qualities.

Your guy isn't a person. He's a monster stat block and those that he encounters are going to treat him that way.

Not to poop on your parade, but I think you've got (way) too far. The lovable moron is memorable. The clever idiot is memorable. The knowledgeable introvert is memorable. I'd (strongly) recommend picking one of the mental stats and fixing it. Give him ONE redeeming quality that isn't "AM MONSTER". Make him a deeply flawed person.

Sometimes it's fun to play "AM MONSTER".

The character who is no character except the carnage he wreaks.

Believe it or not the Hulk is actually highly intelligent.

Some versions, yes. I refer to the classic 'Hulk Smash' dumb muscle personified.

If you really want to play it, nudge your Dex to 15, Con down to 13, and play a CG Rogue, with two-weapon fighting. Two stat-bumps to Dex and you pick up improved TWF right on time at 8th level with combat trick.

Just don't let on to your party that you have a soft heart. When they order you to guard the Paladin they just took down (before ransoming or sacrificing), they'll never know that he didn't outwit you to get you to bend the bars on his prison to let him escape.

AM THINK ORC BARBARIAN AM "RIH-SKI" AS BARBARIAN, BUT AM THINK ORC ONLY GOOD AS BARBARIAN. AM NOT "ECKS-PURT" ON NOT-BARBARIANS, BUT BARBARIAN AM KNOW BARBARIAN GOOD AT FIGHT CASTY-SPELLS.

AM KNOW BARBARIAN AM GOOD AT SMASH CASTIES; AM THINK ORC "SPEH-SHUL-LIES" AT FIGHT CASTIES IF ORC WANT SMASH, OR ORC AM SMASH SELF LIKE DUMB BARBARIAN.

Go with a rogue, then pick up these two feats.

That way you can cleave and sneak attack everybody but your first target.

Not going to lie, a strength based rogue isn't your optimal build, but it can work and be fun. Think your Italian mobster with a baseball bat. It's not subtle, but it is a sneak attack. He's a kneecapper. Sure, he's strong, but he's a cheap bastard and would rather hit you from behind and not have to fight fair.

I hear you, only - and this is the better-thought-out and shorter version of what I was earlier trying to express - we're talking about someone who's dumb, foolish, and repulsive. The trifecta of no redeeming qualities.

I'm just encouraging reconsidering something so desperately unpleasant.

I get 1 stat dump. That can make for an exciting fun to play guy that has a quirk or such.

2 stat dumps says to me "This player is a serious optimizer. He doesn't expect to do much out of combat, and totally expects to 'win' every combat he gets into. This player will be the guy surfing the mobile web on his phone during social encounters, during investigation and other non-combat play."

3 stat dumps tells me that someone likes cheese just a bit too much. Congratulations Sir Chedder, you have broken the game and made it less fun for everyone involved.

I hope you enjoy this Orc and prove me wrong. I hope your party likes having you there the campaign/AP/whatever goes swimmingly and everyone has a great time.

Please don't come to my table with that build.

4 people marked this as a favorite.

Makes a note to self to come to Bomanz table with a Wizard who's dumped Strength, Cha, and Wis, who contributes at least as much out of combat as the Rogue

RPG Superstar 2008 Top 32

Kyrt, depends on how you define 'dumped.' I have a sorcerer with an 8 Str and 10 Wis and Con who I'd hardly call cheesy. But those are 8's and 10's. Not 5's.
