Mount question for PFS character

Pathfinder Society

I have a PFS character (gnome arcanist) that is looking to buy a mount. Mainly I'm just looking for something that will serve to haul my character's equipment, not get into the fights. I found the ostrich in Osirion, Legacy of the Pharaohs book and thought that it would be fitting for my character (he's from Osirion).

So my question comes down to, do I just have to pay the price listed in the monster entry for a trained ostrich that can carry my stuff (with the appropriate saddle) or is there something more that needs to be done?

I've tried looking through other posts, but most everything else deals with animal companions and such.

Yup that is it as far as I am aware of. You pay the listed amount and then roll a bunch of handle animal checks if you want your turkey to do anything.

Because it is caring your gear I don't think you can say it is a noncombatant and have your porter or something take care of it.

How this works.

You go to PFS additional resources

You look for the book

Pathfinder Player Companion: Osirion, Land of Pharaohs:

Equipment: all items on page 25; Feats: all feats on pages 28-29 (reduce all skill rank requirements by -3 and remember that the Hide skill is now Stealth and that the Search skill is now Perception) except Serpent Lash, which has been replaced by the version in Pathfinder Campaign Setting: Rival Guide. You must convert to the current version of Serpent Lash or replace this feat. The versions of Thanatopic Spell and Threnodic Spell in this source are no longer legal. You must convert to the current versions in Ultimate Magic or replace these feats; Prestige Class: the Living Monolith version in this book is no longer legal after January 28, 2014. The version found in Pathfinder Player Companion: People of the Sands must be used. If your character took the prestige class before this date, it is grandfathered in and may be used until retirement. If you wish to switch to the new version of the prestige class, and you meet all the qualifications, you may do so at no cost; Spells: all spells on pages 26-27

If the ostrich is on page 25 as equipment you're good.

How many animals can I have at any given time?

Spoiler:

During the course of a scenario, you may have one combat animal and as many noncombat animals as you like. Noncombat animals (ponies, horses, pet dogs, and so on) cannot participate in combat at all. If you have so many noncombat animals that their presence is slowing a session down, the GM has the right to ask you to select one noncombat animal and leave the rest behind. A summoner's eidolon is considered an animal companion for the purposes of counting combat and noncombat animals. If you have more than one class-granted animal companion (or eidolon), you must choose which will be considered the combat animal at the start of the scenario. In general, a mount, a familiar or mundane pet, and your class-granted animal(s) are acceptable, but more than that can be disruptive.

Do purchased animals come fully trained or do I have to train them myself?

Spoiler:

The entry for Handle Animal on pages 97–98 of the Pathfinder RPG Core Rulebook details which animals come trained—namely, some riding horses and riding dogs have training, but they only come trained to bear a rider into combat. All other animals are subject to Handle Animal to learn additional tricks. See the “Mounts and Related Gear” table on page 159 of the Pathfinder RPG Core Rulebook for additional details.

How can I teach tricks to an animal using Handle Animal?

Spoiler:

You can teach any animal a trick so long as you follow the rules for Handle Animal on pages 97–98 of the Pathfinder RPG Core Rulebook. A GM must observe your Handle Animal check, and must initial what tricks the animal gained in the "Conditions Gained" section of the scenario's Chronicle sheet. The first time a character with levels in druid, ranger, or any other class that grants an animal companion gains an animal companion, the animal enters play knowing its maximum number of tricks as dictated by the animal companion's Intelligence and the character's effective druid level. If the character replaces the animal companion for any reason, the new animal starts with no tricks known, save for bonus tricks granted based on the PC's effective druid level. Once per scenario, you may attempt to train the animal companion a number of times equal to the number of ranks you have in the Handle Animal skill. Each success allows you to teach the animal a single trick; a failed attempt counts against the total number of training attempts allowed per scenario, and you may not attempt to teach the same trick until the next scenario. Alternatively, you may train one animal for a single purpose as long as you have enough ranks in Handle Animal to train the animal in each trick learned as part of that purpose. You may take 10 on Handle Animal checks to teach an animal companion tricks.

As far as I can see you can designate it as a non-combat animal, which means it won't appear on the battle map. It means that it won't get killed, but you can't access equipment that it is carrying during a combat either.

BNW while giving good advice copied the info for the wrong book. But, looking at the correct book in the Additional Resources gives you:

Pathfinder Campaign Setting: Osirion, Legacy of Paroahs:

Misc:all animals on pgaes 54–55, except the hetkoshu crocodile, are legal for play; Spells: reveal mirage is legal for play

Since the ostrich is on page 55, it is legal for play.

Still trying to figure out how you get the other animals on those pages since they don't have a cost and they are not animal companions. It seems the ostrich is the only viable choice even though the other minus the croc are legal.
