Cross of Fire Adventure Path for Obsidian Apocalypse goes Transparent!!!

So I have decided that I am going to make this newest adventure path for our Obsidian Apocalypse campaign called The Cross of Fire, a completely transparent event. I will be describing the process of what I do, how I do it, why we do it and other stuff that goes on while doing this adventure path. Giving all the Pathfinder fans a real peak behind the screen of what we have planned for this. First off the bat, I have decided to have the amazing writer Christina Stiles take over as the lead writer of the project. I offered Christina two projects to choose from and I think she picked this one because I think it was because of the Drow and what we have planned for them.

For those who don’t know, The Cross of Fire is an adventure path I thought up and created nearly two decades ago when I was planning to submit it to Dungeon Magazine. The Cross of Fire was originally planned to be placed in Ravenloft in the area of Bluetspur. The basic of the adventure is the legend of the ultimate undead killing weapon called the Cross of Fire. The cross was supposedly lost/hidden in monastery in a city that was controlled by a colony of Githyanki; which was built on top of a VERY large sewer / underground system that was under the control of the Drow colony; in an area of Bluetspur which was under the control of the Mind Flayers. Your adventuring group decided to take on this challenge and recover this ultimate undead killing weapon, because in Ravenloft you can understand why so many people would find this weapon useful.

And that was the pitch that I told anyone and everyone and I told them one day I would create that adventure. Fast forward 20 years and here we are with this expanding to create the now The Cross of Fire Saga Adventure Path now set in Obsidian Apocalypse. Better still we’ve replaced some of the originally planned monsters due to IP issues (Thanks WOTC); so we have replaced the Mind Player with the Phrenic Scourge and we are working on creating on creating a whole new monster as the replacement for the Githyanki. This new monster is being inspired between American Indian and Japanese influences plus I am giving them a VERY distinct weapon with a COOL racial ability / effect, so it is going to be interesting.

Here is the quick outline we have created and plan to get a more detailed version up here as soon as possible with more items fleshed out:

Cross of Fire AP Part 1 – XXXXXXX (No name for the adventure itself be we are working on it.)

1. Intro and Caravan Raid / Rescue
2. On the road to XXXXX
3. Outside of XXXXX
4. Getting Supplies for trip
5. On the road to the XXXXX Lands
6. Exploring the XXXXX Lands
7. Discovery of the XXXXX Tower
8. Dungeon Crawl the XXXXX tower
9. Epilogue / Tie into Part 2

And that is the general overview of what Cross of Fire Adventure Path is going to be but I am SURE there will be a lot of twist and turns from what the final released product becomes. One of the cooler reasons that we are doing this with transparency is we want to hear direct feedback from the fans of Pathfinder and let us know what we are doing right and wrong.

As always, thank you for your support and interest of this project and LPJ Design.. This is going to be A LOT of fun! You can also follow this on our blog. Talk to you later…

Definitely interested in a reskinned Githyanki concept, and the Native American/Japanese mash is intriguing. For me the defining motes of the gihyanki were the archaic and baroque weapons and armor, martial extra-planar society, genesis from slavery, cool warbands, the gish and the alliance with red dragons. Not that all of these need be ported over, except perhaps the baroque and archaic visuals. Definitely interested in seeing the concept art.

Nice to see the resonance of an idea and concept you have had for two decades coming to fruition. I was just realizing yesterday my campaign world has sat on handwritten and typewritten paper notes and in my mind for half my life - also two decades. :)

Go well Louis.

Well first of I decided that this race needed a signature weapon and I came up with a cross between a tomahawk, Klingon mek'leth and a kukri. And since these guys are hunters and predators by nature, poisons and paralytic agents are common place for them.

I have some very cool ideas for the mash-up of both cultures and visual styles. Samurai traditional armor mixed with Native America tribal weaponry and equipment.

Well how about the Phrenic Scourge are being used as the replacement for the Mind Flayers? We are going to make some changes with them and include and update of a monster that first appearred in our NeoExodua: A House Divided, but works perfect in this horror focused setting. I mean who does want to someone's head explode like in Scanners? Some poor PCs are going to be at the wrong end of that.

How many installments will there be for the Cross of Fire Adventure Path? Six like we have become accustomed to with Pathfinder APs?

Most likely 3 to 4. But mostly 4 parts.

Replace Nekron with Asi Magnor? ;-)

The image was for inspiration. I don't plan on "replacing" Asi Magnor. But I am sure there are some interesting mid-level powerful NPC to discover in the Obsidian Apocalypse setting, especially in the Cross of Fire Saga. Since we are, at a basic visually level, reimagining the Phrenic Scourge,I am sure you will get LOTS of cool monsters and NPCs to use in your campaign.

In the Deep Magic thread, the idea was brought up about projects that are being published in both electronic and printed formats having the pdf version released first. Then backers who get their copies early can provide feedback and catch errors, allowing changes to be made to the final version before it goes to print and ensuring a better quality of product overall. Just food for thought.

Actually the plan is to release the pre-layout version to donors so that can go through it for things we might have missed. Then, they will get the edited layout version to look over again. So that will give them two chances to handle the gremlins that always seem to pop up.

Why? Do players no longer have any love for the Drow? I thought that books with Drow in them sold more copies?

In the original concept, they were perfect. So were the Mind Flayers and Githyanki. But since two of the three races can not be used, it doesn't have the same punch with using the Drow. While I do like they Drow, the monster we will be replacing them with, which we are tentatively calling the Kindred, will fit in well and make at lot of sense. Plus with replacing the Kaylethon with the Githyanki, I think most people have been happy with the change. I mean a black gun powder touting four armed Scottish rhino-humaniod is kind of impressive no matter what way you look at it. And imagine the steampunk weapons they will have including the hybrid bagpipes-flamethrower. That will be fun for all.

Thank you very much for your response, LMPjr007. It is very interesting to get some insight into how an RPG game project comes together and the creative decision that are made along the way.

The rough draft of the Cross of Fire Saga logo. Still needs a little photoshop work with it, but you get the idea.

Sweet graphic design. You've admirably both separated AND linked the "o" in cross and "i" in fire, with one elegant motif - you create a celtic cross by linking them, and consciously or not given a nod to the X-men. ;) And nice crosses on the pair of "s" in Cross.

The real issue with designing a logo like this was the actual length of the words and when you can make a connection with the other letter and to make it fit in with the Obsidian Apocalypse logo. When I am trying to get ideas or just looks for samples of interesting logo I take a look at my Pintrest board of logo design. This is the fun part for graphic design, but it does take a long time to get what you want and like, graphically and visually.

Yes, the Kindred artist's concept does make them look insect-like.

Love the picture. But if it's not working for you...

By the way, Louis, can you link me to info/posts on the Kindred?

Well all we have is the image that you have seen. But expect to see MORE info on the Kindred of [REDACTED], Kaylethon and the Phrenic Scourge as we get closer to the actual release date of the kickstarter.
