The hook
Four high school students gathered at home after school, but instead of playing the latest RPG, they opened 'the Package'. One of them received 'the Package' from the estate of their distant relative, a RPG luminary and father of the genre.
In 'the Package' was artwork that had never been published that was left to one of them as fans of the game. As the avid gamers perused the artwork with their character sheets in hand, they found themselves in the World of Greyhawk created by the master. Rather than being in their adolescent bodies, they found themselves with the bodies and abilities of their recently generated characters.
Posting requirements
Once per day on weekdays. Weekends are optional. Absence with notice for extended times.
Application Guidelines
This will be a Pathfinder adaption of AD&D material. Due to the retro nature of this campaign, only CORE RULEBOOK material will be used. No archetypes either. Why, because I think EGG would have wanted it that way. AND, the NPCs met will not be oracles, gunslingers or summoners; the PCs will reflect the world in which they adventure. You will not face a falcata, but you will not have a falcata :-)
Characters will be first level and 15 point builds using Core Materials with NO TRAITS and AVERAGE wealth. 'Dump stats' are allowed, but their effect will be noticed. Players will select an extra feat at character creation and can include Luck of Heroes (inspired by Neverwinter Nights). Luck of Heroes can only be selected upon creation and grants +1 to all ACs (ff and touch too) and saves. The intent is to select at least one fighter type, one cleric, one magic-user, and one rogue. A fifth slot may be added to select a second fighter or for a bard or monk. Golarion deities will be used instead of Greyhawk dieties.
Character background is the most important! Realize that your character background is what an adolescent picked. The character will find themselves in the World of Greyhawk when he thought he was going somewhere else. A Conan the Barbarian or Elric of Melnibone knockoff is fair game. It does not have to be tailored to Greyhawk, but it should give you a strong foundation to role play an in depth character.
The campaign long-term plan
Campaign will start out in the Village of Orlane for N1:Against the Cult of the Reptile God (levels 1-3)
If successful, will continue with Swordthrust from Mayfair Games, an excellent dungeon crawl (I may own one of the few copies) (levels 3-7)
Then Tracy Hickman's 3-part Desert of Desolation Series I3-5
Recruitment
Recruitment will be open 4-6 weeks. It will give me time to recover from my second round of carporal tunnel surgery.
Final note
My ongoing homebrew campaign is on the extremely high difficulty. The level of my deviousness is now restricted to what the published material allows. The high death toll of my current campaigns should not continue here.

Magic Item Crafting per PF Core Rules?
I love Gary! Was finally able to correspond with him several years ago, I was shocked. I actually played and wrote a couple of short articles for Lejendary Adventures. Very big impact, he had.
No geezer, but 43 here.
We can do a winter warriors thing... old dudes coming out of adventuring retirement.
Logan1138 |
Oh man, this sounds pretty frickin sweet.
I am an old geezer (40y/o) and began playing Basic D&D in 1980 when I was 8. I really miss the "old school" version of D&D (Basic, Expert and AD&D) as the newer RPG's tend to lead to way too much min/max power-gaming for my tastes.
I have played through Against the Cult of the Reptile God but it was like 25 years ago, so I seriously doubt I remember much of anything other than one key NPC and the final boss. I have never played the other two modules/series mentioned...never even heard of them, in fact.
GM Tribute |
4-6 week recruitment is a bit long though, you're gonna have over 100 characters to choose from. 95%+ rejection rate. Just an observation.
Campaign will start in four Weeks. Recruiting will last no longer than four Weeks. I will close recruiting by class when the pool is large enough.
Effort will be made to get at least two nonhumans (core race nonhumans).
Sorcerer vs wizard ok.
Daynen |
I was first introduced to D&D by 3rd edition, but have since dabbled in the older rulesets and tasted various RPG material, but have yet to get in the kind of experience I find my age group sharing. I want in on this. Definitely want a chance to go arcane on this. Might start with the archetypal elven wizard or half-elven sorcerer, though I have a main sorcerer that won't fit the "core only" rules here, so, Wizard it is! Will submit once I have something solid.

I'm somewhat confused by this statement. Are you stating that in creating the character we should "pretend" that we are back in high school and create a character with the limited imagination/life experience that a person that young might have at their disposal? Meaning that a high school-er might limit himself to creating a parody (or carbon copy) of Gimli the Dwarf or Conan the Barbarian rather than creating a more subtle, fully realized character that an adult would gravitate towards?
Daynen |
yeah I've been meaning to ask about that myself. when we get in game, are we meant to roleplay a teenager in our character's world? like "holy crap im a wizard? uhh, so who's the local deities around here, and um, where do I find spell components? I wave my hands and mumble something about missiles, hoping that I blast the guy." Is that what we should be looking forward to? or have we misinterpreted?

WINTER WARRIORS
I love Hassan's idea of being winter warriors coming out of retirement.
"Damn, we're getting too old for this sh..."
I've a got a character named Malack that I've run in many campaigns and many different game systems. He's fighter, an older mercenary that has drunken away most of his skills and has survived just about everything. A simple fighter with endurance and diehard.
I'd be keen on running whatever though.
Hassan Ahmed |
I think that means he's not looking for realism, but the unfettered and ambitious creativity of a youth who just discovered they could play make believe in an RPG campaign setting.
The background should be detail rich and make sense in and of itself, but doesn't need to be historically accurate Greyhawk-wise.
I could be wrong.

First, I have seen darned good backgrounds from adolescents--I have one at home. I am just giving a great excuse for cheesier stereotypical heroes as a foundation. As background is so important though, if you come up with a Drizzt clone, better make sure he has depth. What I really meant to say is for this recruiting, borrowing great ideas from existing characters out there is fair game. And do not worry about tailoring it to Greyhawk, you will be characters finding themselves in a strange world.
Finally, no initial skill ranks in Knowledge Local to reflect this.
Elgoron |
Elven wizard, ready to go. full character sheet on my profile page.
BACKGROUND
Sadly, every adventurer's tale of youth has a downturn, and for Elgoron, it was ironically his thirst for knowledge and understanding that set him on his path. The one downside to having an insatiable fascination for magic is the sheer amount of resources needed to pursue your craft. The endless flasks of acid, the tindertwigs, the spell components, the test materials, the damage done by the occasional accident...all the increasing costs of his research and experimentation began to strain his small elven village. While self-sufficient, Elgoron's village was not prepared for the exorbitant upkeep needed by his continuing studies, so the community elected to send him out into the larger world to find his fortune, pursue his love of the arcane, and maybe learn a thing or two about moderation.
PERSONA:
Elgoron's a bit of a nerd, with an arcane flavor. he's mostly indifferent to mundane concerns and people, but those who share his interests or compliment his adventuring needs find welcome company.
ROLE:
This ain't your grandpa's battlemage. I plan on seeking time to craft some nice stuff, rings in particular, and make some useful supplies down the line. My spells aren't meant to win fights, but rather to change them. Buffs, environmental stuff, summons, and other game-changers are my intended stock and trade. Keep me out of the fray though; a wizard with no CON bonus kinda folds like paper. Plus this guy grew up in a village; didn't see much combat, so he's got lots of practical everyday spells, and very little flashbangboom stuff...for now.
Gyldyr |
Saying 'Challenge Accepted' and trying to make a worthy Drizzt expy, here is his character sheet. I know the rules for playing drow are in the Advanced Race Guide; awaiting word on what will and won't work.
For roleplaying purposes, I am a bit puzzled; as far as I can gather, is the idea to play kids who have found themselves in the bodies and places of their characters and are trying to play out that role?
Brask Alpsbane |
I humbly submit Brask Alpsbane, cantankerous dwarf ranger with a penchant for colorful curses, a dislike for all things elven, and a hatred of goblins, hobgoblins, and bugbears so strong that he gets a little insane fighting them.
Probably doesn't help that his charisma is actually lower this time. ^_^
I'll post his background and other stuff later tonight.
Brask Alpsbane |
Background and other stuff. Nothing setting specific, besides one offhand reference to Desna, since I'm not as familiar with Greyhawk deities. Enjoy.
The dwarf was not nearly as burly as his kin, but he more than made up for it by being the quickest to start a fight. Regulars at the Squatting Dragon knew better than to insult the ranger.
Unfortunately the elven wizard was part of an adventuring party that was just in town. At that moment you could tell the regulars from the new-in-towns. They reached for helms and caps, anythign to cover their heads before hiding under the table.
"I am sorry, but your mother must have begat you with an orc. There is no way that you--"
"ME MUM WAS A FINE DWARVEN LADY! RAARRRGH!"
"OH GODS WHHHHYYYYYYYYYYYY!"
And so began the monthly brawl.
Truth be told, it's much more likely that Brask's mother bedded a dire wolverine to begat the ferocious dwarf. He grew up outside of normal dwarven society and as a result, never really got the hang of dwarven social graces, like what's considered an off limits target in a straight up bar fight.
High-pitched Male Elven voice, made higher by recent events: "He got me blueberries!"
Growing up a couple of elves called him an idiotic brute. Sure, he knew it was true, and his mother called him that all the time, but she as family, these were uppity elves. He left them with sprains, bruises and the one girl with a big, wet, slobbery kiss on the mouth. But as much as he dislikes elves, he hates goblins.
"Dwarvenses stop beating ready-man into pulp--"
"BARKEEP YER BOUNCER LET IN A GOBLIN!"
"Not goblin, hobgoblin. Am bounc--AIEEEEEEEEEEEEE!"
A couple of goblins managed to catch him when he was very young. They made the mistake of giving him a hammer and having him fight their champion. A shot to the jublies and a another couple to the head and the goblin was down. Those that ran were hunted down. Those that begged for mercy, found none. Those that fought, were emasculated before being pounded into submission.
"S-sweet Desna! That doesn't bend like that."
"I GIVE! I GIHIHIHIHIHIVE!"
"Brask, stop trying to kill my bouncer."
"Eh, wasnae mooch o' a fight anyway."
"Brask."
"Aye?"
"Get out."
In short he looks like an ill-tempered dwarf.
Strangely, he likes the ladies and would never harm an elven woman beyond traumatizing her with a big wet kiss. The only exception is if it's him or her. He always picks himself.
Durahl of Highhaven |
Submitting Durahl of Highhaven for this campaign.
In the interest of full disclosure I should point out the following:
1) It has been quite some time since I played any non-computer based RPG's (approx. 12 years). I have played plenty of CRPG's: Baldur's Gate series, Temple of Elemental Evil and Neverwinter Night's to name a few in the interim, so I am not completely out of touch with D&D/Pathfinder.
2) I have never played Pathfinder. Having played Neverwinter Night's, I am pretty comfortable with the 3.5/Pathfinder rule set in general, however.
3) I have never played a Play-by-Post campaign. This is where I will probably need the most help, should I be picked to participate in the campaign, as I am not familiar with how die rolls are accomplished, how combat timing works, etc.
Well....now that I have effectively eliminated myself from contention, I will just say that I certainly hope I get the chance to pop my Pathfinder/PbP "cherry" with this campaign.

Take it from someone who's applied for a few of these, You haven't come anywhere close to eliminating yourself. The community here is pretty good about getting new people involved.
That said, congrats on making the leap. Be warned that you can easily become addicted to this and have a multitude of character ideas that'll take years to go through.
Not that I would know about that.[/blatant lies]

So just for clarity's sake, are we making characters that are high school that find themselves in world of greyhawk? A kind of dual layer of roleplaying?
I'm super interested in this campaign as is a friend of mine. He grew up with Gary's work whereas I started d&d later in life but would love to see the golden age. We'd like to join as a team, maybe brothers like the twins in Dragonlance. We're still thinking about our characters though.
Me'mori |
Finally! An opportunity to play that one classic idea that couldn't really find expression until now! Also, Brask, your background had me laughing in my chair, love it!
The guy gamer that decided to make a female character because:
"You know guys, there's always one chick in an adventuring party, and she's always either a badass, or cute but helpful." Despite the groans and laughter and good natured teasing, he made character and sat back with a grin. "You either get The Woobie or The Amazon, and being a Paladin would complicate things way too much for my comfort, So you get the Woobie.. Mostly."
Ama Freewater
As might be expected, whatever her justifications may have been, her regard would always be less in the eyes of most of the senior clergy... Of course, that did not mean that she stopped.

Thank ye. This is actually Brask's second incarnation. The first went a little looney in GM Tribute's other game. (Roleplayed him into a corner) So I'm bringing him back to hopefully stomp around Greyhawk a bit. (Those poor elves.)

Presenting Lido Quickfingers. Equipment will be purchased on selection.
"Lido was born the fifth of eight children in the halfling ghettoes of Riddleport. He was the runt of the litter, and had to get by on guile and skill even more than most halflings. He fell into work as a break-in specialist for one of that city's crime bosses, after attempting to rob the stronghold of one of the other bosses. He'd taken a lover in one of Calistria's sacred brothels, but it was his misfortune that she was the sister of the crime boss he had attempted to rob. She handed him over during one of their meetings, and Lido was almost sent to the bottom of the river. He was able to escape, and is now on the road, seeking adventure far from Riddleport's streets."
Trent cleared his throat. "So, uh, what do you guys think?"
The group looked at each other, and then one of them said, "So, uh...where's your friend, Fafhrd?" The rest of the group snickered at this barb.
"Hey!", Trent shouted in defense. "I don't play rogues! I usually make fighters! It's not my fault football practice ran late, and someone else made the fighter!"
"No, look, it's fine," said the gamemaster. "I'm actually pleased you're trying to play something other than the beatstick."
"Yeah," Trent agreed. "It'll be weird playing something that tiny."
Metatext: Trent is the kicker for the local high school football team, and this is his first time playing something other than a human fighter. I like the idea of the athletic guy suddenly being forced to find ways around problems, rather than through them.

What? We're not rolling 3d6 in order? Blasphemy!
One Gnomish Illusionist coming soon...
Dude, you rolled 3d6 for AD&D? Now that is hardcore! Our group "wussed out" and rolled 4d6, dropping one and putting them in any order we wished. We left the "3d6 in order" stuff behind when we moved from Expert to AD&D.
RE: Gnome illusionists...I had a bizarre fixation with Gnome Illusionists back when I was playing AD&D 25 years ago. I have no idea what made them so attractive to me. The illusionist class sucked serious balz and, yet, I continued to roll them up.
GM Tribute |
Some great characters already and plenty of time to go.
20 point buy and no traits but a bonus feat. Pathfinder CORE only with Golarion dieties.
I have decided there will definitely be 5 chosen.
1 Melee Fighter
2 Cleric
3 Rogue
4 Wizard
5 Another fighter, bard or monk.
I will try to pick two or three non-humans.
A little spoiler about the fact that you are characters playing characters. You will be given a notional background of the high school character upon selection. You can use some motivations of the character playing your character to influence roleplay. Although this 'double roleplaying' is not required, it will earn more XPs.
