Star Trek, supers style...

PaizoCon General Discussion

Hi all,
I'm putting together an off-schedule Star Trek game. Will run it either Wednesday evening or Thursday, before or after the Meet and Eat, depending upon player availability. Homebrew may be available, provided I don't get arrested by Marriot security.

This will be a bit of an experiment because we'll use the Marvel Heroic Roleplaying system for the game. MHRP is perfect for Star Trek: what are the Star Trek universe heroes if not superheroes? The system uses a dice pool mechanic, adding dice based on various aspects of your character. You roll against GM characters or the Doom Pool, the GM's reserve dice pool that grows and shrinks based on game events. It's easy, intuitive, and cinematic. Trust me.

I'll provide pregens of the TOS crew to choose from. First dibs on characters go to previous players in our games (Firefly, Star Frontiers, Star Wars) but I think there'll be enough to go around...and red shirts for anyone else that wants to join.

The premise: A Federation first contact survey team has gone missing on a pre-warp world and the U.S.S. Enterprise has been dispatched to find out what happened to them and retrieve the team if possible, within the limits imposed by the Prime Directive.

Right, like the PD ever limited Kirk and Company...

If you would like to participate please note your interest here so I can get a rough headcount. I won't hold you to it...just want to get an idea of how many players we might have. Also please note which night is best. I know some folks might not be around on Wednesday. Will post additional details and a final decision on day/time/location here when I know for sure. Thanks, and may the Force...wait, nevermind.
M

Edit: Addendum. I'm not saying whether this is set in the TOS universe or the Abrams-verse. I like both, but I know some don't care for the latter. It doesn't matter much to either the story or the characters. The characters will definitely have some "Distinctions" from both.

Sovereign Court

I get in on Wednesday night, as long as Delta doesn't "adjust" my itinerary again. I'll post here as soon as I land in Seattle.

Cool. What time? Reasonably early?

I've just seen that the meet and eat has gaming space from noon to midnight...or something like that. Might be another possibility.
M

Sovereign Court

Curretnly ... landing at 944pm on Wed (with a 4 hour layover in ATL) ... so no, not really early ...

Yeah. That probably rules out Wednesday...as I'd like to have you onboard. I don't mind staying up late but I imagine you're going to be beat!
M

I'm in for sure. Set phasers for fun!

Frikkin' Dralasite! ;)

Me, too!

Actually, I should be good to go late. Travel does not wear me out too much (and I need to adjust to West Coast time ASAP). However, even if my flight lands on time, I would be looking at being at the hotel, checked in and ready to go by about 1030pm ... not sure how much time we'd have left for playing (unless folks want to run until 2am and y'all NPC my character until I get there).

There will be gaming space set up AT the Meet and Eat on Thursday as well ... could start there and then relocate to the hotel later on if needed.

I'm good with going very late. No good reason to get up very early on Thursday. What about Pat and El-El? Edit: and I'm sure we can find some other bodies.

Okay. Pat's not going to be in until Thursday and I'd like him there. How does Thursday from 7-midnight sound to everyone?

Tentative players so far are me, El-El, Pat Luther, zylphryx, and lolrobots (Tad from Firefly). I'd like to work out a time that works for all of us and then see if we can find a couple more players that are free during that time.
M

Hiya - this is Mike from last-years Firefly game(as Quinton Stoat), and also Pat's MA game last year, and I'd love to get in on the Trek game if there's still room. I'm tentatively going to the Meet and Eat thing Thursday but I don't need to stay for all of that. Gaming from 7-midnight sounds good!

I'll be spending much of the con manning a dealer's room table so I'd like to get as much off-schedule gaming in as I can. And I love Star Trek. :)

Hi, Mike. Great! That makes five players, assuming everyone can make it.

El-El and I are thinking of getting together to play some Marvel, with actual superheroes, on the evening before (Wednesday). I know zylphryx will be there so I hope he can join us...but the invitation is open to anyone. If you want to get an intro to the system (it's easy, so don't worry) then you're welcome to join us. I should have beer!
M

I won't be getting to Seattle until Thursday so I'll have to miss the Marvel game, thanks for the invite though.

Looking forward to gaming with you all again!

Shadow Lodge

I would be able to make it Thursday night, and I've got a friend who's interested as well! Provided you guys have the room for two more?

Sure!

Been working on this. Just played a little scenario with El-El. It was supposed to be a combat, and it almost went that way. Kirk and Commander Klang were super pissed but Spock had Uhura get the Fed ambassador and a Mr. Mudd, who started this whole thing, up on a split screen...where Kirk finally managed to get the whole situation back under control. I was totally amazed. We were shields-up, phasers/disrupters-armed and ready to come to blows but El-El took it in a different direction.

I think this may all work out pretty well.
M

I played the bridge crew and it was sooo easy. To start with, I did the Kirk always-looking-for-a-fight diplomacy.
But I also used all the characters personalities in the scene.
Spock using Uhura's communication skills outmaneuvered Kirk and disarmed the situation before it could reach Defcon: "Ripped Shirt!"
Kirk wanted to be annoyed at them... But then he realized they saved him from mountains of paperwork.
Yeah, that's why they did it. :-/

Dark Archive

I would be lolrobots's friend who is DEFINITELY interested! I might be a little late but very close to 7pm. Are you flexible on time?

I'm traveling with William Bryan and am interested as well. We're definitely aiming for that 7pm time.

Sovereign Court

Also, as an aside, Big Kyle did say there would be tables available for gaming at the Meet and Eat.

Jut sayin'. ;)

Isn't the meal portion over by 7pm? We can push to 8pm if not.
M

Sovereign Court

could be ... not sure there is a hard and fast time for things at the Meet and Eat.

Welcome to the game lolrobots' friends!

Okay. We'll go ahead and push this to 8pm so folks have time to meet and eat. I've PMed my cell number to the key folks (lolrobots' friends, check with her for it) so get in touch if you need to.

As for Marvel tonight, we can decide tonight based on who's there. It might just be me, zylphryx, and El-El. If so, I might just whine to see if you guys want to get a jump on Burning Empires world burning or something. ;)
M

Any thoughts on where the Trek game will be happening? Should we meet up in the lobby?
- Mike

Will scope it out tomorrow. Possibly on patio by ballrooms.

Okay, final word: The open gaming rooms on the second floor are open so we'll use one of those. They're on the second floor. If you exit the lobby between the bar and the Aqua-whatsit place into the pool atrium and take a left then your first right you'll find several meeting rooms named after WA cities (Tacoma, etc.) We'll be in one of those. Just poke your head in and look around.

Start time is 8:00 pm but I'm a bit pressed for prep time because my previous game went longer than planned. If I can't make it right at 8:00 I'll ask El-El to greet players and give an overview of the Marvel system. Looking forward to it!
M

Sounds good! I'm at the lobby bar now grabbing some food and a drink or two. See you at 8!

8?

OK. I'll see you all then! I have made it, and I am here!

Many thanks to all of the players who joined us last night. You guys were awesome crew. Even though we didn't quite get to the conclusion (well, or even the conflict!) I had a great time hanging out with you guys and geeking Star Trek.

Hmmm. Next time I think there will have to be limitations on alcohol consumption and assigned seating. ;) Or, maybe not...
