Ok, this has to be the dumbest post I've seen in the ENTIRE topic.
REALLY NOW?!?
1) I honestly don't care one bit whether the next monster book is the Bestiary 5 or the Monster Codex 2 or whatever; I want both... but at least I'm patient enough to wait for them to be announced and NOT make a fuzz about the next release NOT being the book you guys all want.
2) I did NOT say that the Bestiary 5 was unnecessary; I said that logically speaking, it's easier to make a Codex than a Bestiary, because a Codex requires much less new materials than a Bestiary. Also, more power to you if you want one, but as of now, I can run my game just fine with the previous 4 Bestiaries that I purchased.
3) I'm not in any kind of urge for a Bestiary; I don't suffer from a craving or such. I'll happily buy the 5th one when it'll be released and enjoy every single page of it... minus the table of contents and repeated infos :P
4) A Codex is actually just as useful as a Bestiary. Betwen spending hours to make a tribe, EVERYTHING is done for you. I swear, if I now need a lizardfolk tribe, I'll have it built up in a few minutes.
5) Finally, something I REALLY hated about WotC's Monster Manuals 4 and 5 WAS the addition of classed monsters as "new entries". We had drows, ogres, mind flayers, lizardfolks, vampires, githyankis, gnolls, orcs, yuan-tis, hobgoblins and kuo-toas INSTEAD of new monsters. I'm actually glad that Paizo splited the two kinds of entries in two separate books.
I'm branded as a "traitor" for wishing for BOTH a Bestiary 5 AND a Monster Codex 2? Ok, what got implanted in your brain to ever conceive such a twisted idea?

Context can be hard to pick up from text—in the future, please keep this in mind before you post. Take a step back from the keyboard, read what you wrote, relax. People want different things out of this game, and that may not match up with what you want. And that's okay.
I don't know how much you know about this situation, but... what IS dividing the community so much about this?
A Bestiary is good for major and unique encounters, while a Codex is good for minor and frequent encounters. In my book (pun TOTALLY intended), both books are valuable resources for GMs.
PCs aren't monster hunters by default, they can end up fighting groups of classed NPCs, especially in a world where tribes, cabals and such are regular occurences.
Sure, it's fun to fight a HUGE dragon at one point, but fighting medium opponents that rival your skills, spells, equipments and tactics is a nice break from monotone combats.
I honestly don't get it... Bestiary lovers can have NPCs that can control these monsters and Codex lovers can have monsters that can control these NPCs.
And then there's the monster junkie who just wants more enemies to beat the PCs, like me :P

Could have sworn that it was a conflict here...
As for Psychopomps, these... already got a few more entries in APs, so for the neutral major outsider class, they're doing well.
Aeons on the other hand...

Well most of the conflict in these threads tends to have its source in one poster, so I don't think it's any sort of rift in the community.
I would personally prefer Bestiary 5 over another codex, but would also enjoy and probably purchase the codex as well, so I don't really have much stake in the "fight".

Damn, I can never afford to buy APs so I'll never see them. Aeons would be nice I guess, I prefer them to devils and demons, but psychopomps are much cooler.

Oh... I see...

I'd take BOTH Bestiary 5 and Monster Codex 2 if they were released at the same time. I like both materials, because it's good to have another 300-monster batch to use and it's good to have monstruous NPCs ready to use. The latter is VERY useful for a GM like me who kinda has trouble making the most optimal NPCs. Yeah, I suck at it, I'm not perfect, whadayawannadoaboutit...
I wish I could add some more things to this B5 wish list...I know I wish there was going to be a B5 this year:)
Don't we have like over 2,000 monsters listed or something? I believe that we can safety take a break from wishlisting and talk about the book in general :P
On that very same note, I'd like to see encounter tables... and possibly the artists' names printed under the artworks, if possible. If not, then how about listing the artists' portfolios in the credits... with their agreement, of course?

I think we're going to see Bestiary 5 this year. I'm hopeful people. Especially since Inner Sea Monster Codex is out this June.
Wish harder, because NPC Codex will be there instead...
We get a very small bestiary (only 30 or 40 monsters maximum with some old monsters varieties in it) this year instead of Bestiary 5 which will probably only happen in 2017 or 2018 as Cthulu is already in bestiary 4 probably, and he's the most important Wolverine-status monster.

If/When we get new Proteans and Aeons I would like to see...
Fixed... because these twos deserve a major update. Building CN and N petitioners is becoming a little difficult due to the lack of members in these categories.
One concern I have with B5 is the lack of any idea for templates. While B1 to B4 had templates from both the SRD and the Advanced Bestiary, now Paizo can't use the remaining AB templates since they're all converted... and under a different publisher.
So yeah, for templates, I don't know what they could go for, aside from those found in APs. Still, many of them are Golarion-exclusive...
The only one that would be useful is a squadron template, basically a "swarm" made of Small, Medium or Large creatures, similar to the mob template in WotC, except more specialized in group tactics. That would be a blessing if GMs end up having to deal with PCs who can wipe entire armies.
A group of 1st-level warriors grouped together to form a huge swarm-like platoon would surely decimate the hardiest of PCs.
JiCi |
I would also love more Aeons but it looks like this group has nobody at Paizo that is interested doing any more.
3 writers at Paizo told me that the Psychopomps simply have more importance in Golarion than Aeons, that's why they are more numerous.
I have been asking for half-elemental/elemental creature based templates for a while now.
Good idea ^_^
Would also love a half-chaotic and half-lawful outsider based templates as well.
I... don't think these mix that often with other creatures, but that's just me. I tip my hat to Paizo if they come up with something though.

Soon be another list update folks, page 52 of this thread had some long lists posted on it so it is taking some time to work through.
FYI, the requests list has zoomed past 3000 now and is getting close to 3100.
I shall post at the weekend the current updated list, just trying to get to the end of page 52 as a good spot to stop.

Utah Raptor ( it's the Mega-Raptor in Bestiary 1 under Dionychus or however that dinosaur name is spelled ) that way we can actually turn into it/have it.
Alicorn ( Though you do have the Half-Celestial Unicorn in Bestiary 1 as a fine example but flying Unicorns are awesome!) Possibly Alicorn Agathion!
A true dragon with Feathered wings and feather/fur scales that can carry a medium sized creatre that isn't a snake with wings. ( I can't even find a good miniature of one )
Also a Good Magical Beast or two Beasts that go around to Poisoned World areas and clean up the Bad Magic/Mana Wastes and restore it to beautiful thriving healthy life. IE: Alkenstar's mana-wastes something that goes around and tries to clean up there and restore life.
To Be perfectly fair Paizo, you wrote that the stones around the area of the World Wound were very important to the Green Faith and the last defenders to fall during the initial invasion were Druids and Witches. If it's so important then why are life giving nature spells restoring this so we can bring life back the more demon thingies we kill?
Also Demon/Devil things who's weakness is Chocolate.

So...to be honest we have listed so many monsters that its hard for me to think of any "unique" monster from mythology that hasn't already been brought up. I can find plenty of new names and variations, but that is what they are. Maybe if I can get ahold of some more good sources for African/Australian/South American monsters, this may change.
Now, looking at science fiction, horror, and fantasy MOVIES, there seems to be plenty of creatures for inspiration. Here are a few that I can think of [Spoiled of course]
It Follows
This is a great recent horror movie with a truly unsettling monster. Basically, it acts as a curse (and I debated whether it would function better as one versus a creature), which can be passed via sexual contact. If you get the curse, the creature will slowly and relentlessly stalk you until you either pass the curse off, or it catches you...and does horrible things resulting in your mangled body being found the next day.
The creature would probably be a medium-sized native outsider with perfect shape-shifting abilities, with the ability to take any humanoid form, usually something to freak the cursed person out, or to allow it to get closer to its victim. Whats worse, although its corporeal, it's completely invisible and undectable by anyone who isn't cursed or was cursed in the past. It's horribly strong and resistant to damage.
You would obviously have to tweak it further for Pathfinder, since the average adventuring party in a fantasy game is a bit more resilient than a group of high school students.
Splinter
This is a personal favorite of mine. It's basically a fungus like organism that invades and takes control of tissue while feeding on it, eventually taking control of the body but not the mind of its victims. It doesn't really understand how limbs and such works, so its victims tend to get pulled apart by the organism or contorted into horrible shapes. It also can grow bigger in size by fusing the bodies of it's victims into some horrible Picasso-like flesh sculpture.
Obviously this would be an ooze or plant. Its normally the form of a black ooze like substance, but can extrude jagged bits that cause piercing damage and spread it's poison. A victim who succumbs would take con damage and suffer movement penalties, and with enough damage would basically become a "new" Splinter, which can aggregate with it's "parents" to provide more HP and increase its size category. Its vulnerable to fire, and completely blind to anything not heat, so it would have those weaknesses.
Blood Glacier
The main "monster" here is an anomolous alien microbe which mixes and matches DNA to spawn new monsters from its host. So you get things like weird Eagle wasps, fly goats, fox isopods, etc.
So it's basically a template that would probably add a set number of insectoid features to a stock monster. I would probably also give such creatures the ability to spread their contagion, causing the host to develop a disease which after a sufficient amount of damage leads to the violent "birth" of a new monster
Absentia
Another really great horror movie, this time revolving around extradimensional "trolls" which like to collect people. We don't get much of a look at the creature, but it seems to be Silverfish like, and they set up lairs around bridges and such. Their lairs being actually extradimensional nests where they abduct people to for the lulz, and who possess red-green morality and intelligence, and sometimes make "trades" that the person involves usually regrets.
So...Abberation or Outsider of some sort, maybe an inhabitant of the Shadow or Ethereal planes. Intelligent. Obviously some sort of dimensional or phasing manipulation abilities. We don't get a lot of information on them, although in the movie they are connected to legends of Fairy and Troll abductions, and stories behind troll tolls. Obviously this fluff would have be changed what with Trolls and Fairies being a think. You could probably refluff, say phase spiders, as something like this, but I think you could make a truly disturbing monster by playing up the "collector" and "be careful what you wish for " aspects of the monster
The Bay
This is the movie based on the pictures of the isopod which eats the tongue of fish and take the place of the organ. In the movie itself, we see these guys as two forms of monster. There are isopod swarms, that well...eat people and do typical swarm stuff. And then there are the parasitic infections, which kill people.
I desperately want to see more isopod monsters, and it surprises me that we haven't gotten more vermin inspired by them (I think there is a familiar..but that is it?). One option to play up the Bay critters is to make a magical variant that actually takes over the tongue (something that movie kind of leaves out). by taking over the tongue, the parasite can control the voice and spellcasting of it's victims, maybe even going ahead and controlling the person in general.

new website about mythological creatures, every monday, wednesday and friday he adds new updates. Some interesting looking creatures here you should check out if you're mythology lover, and also for Bestiary 5 (If it ever comes out)
New monsters I never heard about were:
Phalmant
Puaka
Sinad
Munuane
Scarbo
Isitwalangcengce
Sapo Fuerzo
New monsters I added to my own RPG game are:
Palis - I see them as Resident Evil Lickers, with a bizarre and alien tongue like on the picture.
Dijiang - Could be new Protean, or maybe a neutral creature that spreads confusion everywhere it goes.
Boongurunguru - I would like these as magical warthog with plants growing on them, and with a bee/hornet-hive-like cyste on its head to replace the tusks.
Caspilly - A very big lionfish like horror that also has the pufferfish like abilities and a unicorn horn, its the enemy of whales.
Arragouset - What I made up for the Shellycoat (weapons made from shells) is actually what these guys possess, they fight with dangerous and horrid shells.

Yeah I saw the link for that in James Jacob's question thread, and meant to post it here.
Other interesting sites I have found:
Sort of a standard list of fairies and related spirits and very poorly edited in places, but I am including a link here because the site owner appears to be Russian or at least have access to a lot of info for former USSR. So mixed in with the standard stuff is a lot of Central Asian/Siberian/etc creatures I have never encountered before
Also here is a cool illustrated website on Malaysian ghosts and critters

I like the polymorphing breath weapon, insanity gaze, matter-phasing, random poison and portal-attacks, particularly!
There seems to be a faint Egyptian theme to the proteans, so I'd want to see that explored, and give them functions and features evocative of Ammut or Duat or multiple-souls (perhaps ripping out soul-fragments and sending them against their bearer, like creating shadows from living foes, and forcing them to fight these bits of their own souls to regain the lost hit points / energy levels lost when they were formed, or something).
Gosh, that would be a cruel sort of attack, tail slap someone so hard that a part of their soul gets knocked loose, costing them a few levels of energy drain, and begins attacking them like an undead shadow. They get the levels back when they kill the soul-fragment.
A protean that defines the idea of formlessness, being able to assume transitory solid, liquid or gaseous (or even energy?) states, could also fit the theme of inchoate matter. I came up with something similar.
Proteans have great potential.
