Which, when you consider that the D10 originated in Japan, makes little sense.

However, the R. Talsorian "Gundam Senki" variant of Mekton was also modified to use 2D6 for that very reason, so as little sense as it makes, it does bear up.

Strangeness abounds!

I would kill for that version of Gundam. Literally. I think I saw it years and years ago in Japanese at Forbidden Planet in NYC. I didn't buy it because I couldn't afford it. I never forgave myself.

Let me... Um. Let me contact my sources.

I may be able to spare you the 20-Life sentence. No guarantees.

Heh.
"Literally".
Man, what a classic.
...
Don't kill me.

So, uh, random confession time, for some reason:

Favorite Gundam: 08th MS Team (right up to the ending, anyway, which was... meh)*

Favorite Anime: much harder, but it's up there between Cowboy Bebop, Record of Lodoss War (I saw it before I ever even knew what D&D actually was - so awesome!), Dragon Ball (the original 13 episodes; as opposed to DBZ**), Princess Tutu (shut up, I don't care), most (but not all) Miazaki/Ghibli stuff (most especially Whispers of the Heart and Princess Mononoke), and... uh... Please Teacher!***

There is a lot of anime that doesn't make that list, and a lot that I probably have forgotten that should. But that's what I've got at present. :)

* And I don't caaaaaaaa~aaaaaaaaare~! :D

** I can say with no hesitation that Dragon Ball was my first anime, which might explain my strong reaction to it. So good was it (at the time), that I got up at 5:30 A.M., setting my alarm, to sneak down stairs and watch it ("sneak" for the purpose of "avoid waking sleeping family", as opposed to "avoid getting caught doing something wrong").

*** Hey! Don't judge! It's actually really well done! ...sort of. At least it's not the reeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaally creep-tastic sequel. *shivers*

Please Teacher though is one that was ruined for me before I got to see it. I was curious about it and went looking online for stuff and found what I thought was a scanlation of the manga.....it turned out to be a fairly disgusting H-doujin. Pretty much killed any desire to see the real series.
Learned a valuable lesson about looking things up online that day.

It's a shame more of the original Dragon Ball didn't get to TV over here, there was so much more of it. I think Funi still has it available on DVD though. The Red Ribbon Army stuff is great plus you see how Goku meets all the other heroes like Krillian and Tien. Always meant to add it to my collection but never got around to it

Have to admit sometimes my collecting anime can get away with me. Not all of it good but even the bad stuff can be a lot of fun to watch. Plus there are a few I haven't actually gotten around to watching yet.

Just got word that my Mystery Box from Crunchyroll is on it's way. 30 random DVDs for $30. Kind of hoping I get lucky and it fills in some gaps in my collection. Made myself a challenge that once it arrives I will begin to watch my entire collection in Alphabetical order Abenaboshi to Zero's Familiar.

There's... an... "H"... Please Teacher!... manga... D:

To be honest, despite my post above, it's not all that surprising that there's an "H"... of anything... much less a by-definition fetish-series like Please Teacher!

Personally, I kind of ignored the fetishy-parts of it, and enjoyed the characters, and fantastic situation. In a way, it's similar to the Tenchi series (though turned up to "11") - I didn't care for the fetish-parts, and enjoyed everything else.

Semi-sadly, I haven't ever really gotten into the whole "collect anime" thing outside of very specific series or groups; I certainly haven't been collecting since getting married*. Too expensive*. My collection slowly grows through gifts and free online perusal*.

The primary "thing" in Please Teacher! is that the protagonist is "too young" for the love interest (the eponymous teacher) he ends up with (even getting married to her!); although it's strange, the primary conflict of this is kind of "resolved" by him actually being one year "older" than he seems, due to a strange condition where he "froze" (effectively suspended animation) for a year... making it legal. :/

That said, the primary "squick" factor isn't so much a problem for me, as, while I've taught kids that age - and entirely find them as "kids", and not anything "attractive" -, there's often not that great a difference between the age groups they're talking about (the two primary cast members), and, historically speaking, I know that such age-differentiation was once normal (though usually... and this does enter "squick" territory... even more extreme, and in the reverse, gender-wise). Plus it's not even terribly much dwelt on - it's more or less, "HERE'S A PROBLEM, OKAY, THEY'RE MARRIED, LET'S CONTINUE" and then dropped as setting-background.

That one element aside the rest of the series is quite fascinating - it explores the dynamic between a couple who are learning how to adjust to married life, how they resolve conflicts of interest (how does she give her husband a bad grade?), and similar problems, all set with a (honestly mostly ignored, except for occasional light humor) backdrop of aliens and extraplanetary life coming to explore, interact, and learn. It actually has good insights into the state of marriage, resolving conflicts, and the characters involved.

The last episode(s?) revolve around a strange conflict in which the couple attempts to... actually... have... uh... "interpersonal exchange", weirdly encouraged by the eponymous teacher's mother (who may or may not be serious in her attempts to seduce the guy), and it's oddly suggested that they may have had relations before, but left ambiguous as to whether or not they have... so... uh... I don't know. Outside of the very beginning and very end, it's really good, though.

The... *sigh*... sequel... is not. Please Twins is all about a young man and two women, all orphans. Both of the young girls have various reason to believe that the young man is their older brother, although by the limited records available (basically only a picture), he only has one sister; both girls share his strange eye color, and none of them have the same hair color. And both of them fall in love with him, and he with both of them.

They all live in the same house (he takes them in as their "brother" until they can figure out who is actually related by blood), and the entire rest of the show is the tension of who is really the sibling - and thus gets to stay - and who is really the "stranger" (stupid on so... many... levels...!) - who then has to go. Eventually, the girls make a pact to ensure he ends up with no-one, but one of them, whoever isn't the sister.

... and that's basically where the series ends.

So... uh... if a story about "maybe, probably, potential incest and an unresolved love triangle" is your sort of thing, then you might enjoy. Otherwise... ugh.

Dragon Ball was really quite mind-blowing as a child. Not until Gargoyles and Batman the Animated Series did I see a show that took me seriously and actually cared about whether or not I thought about the continuity of the world at large. Quite awesome.

* The one exception to this is purchasing the complete box-set of Princess Tutu. My wife and I both agreed on it before-hand. We are the demonstrable result of "try before you buy".

There needs to be an anime version of Rule 34. If it exists, there is an H-Doujinshi of it.

I'd like you to know that this thread has enabled me to give rise to the phrase "Doujinception."

You're welcome.

So how was the Winter season for you?

Log Horizon was great, as was Buddy Complex. Looks like BC is about to get weird, though. I hope they avoid the pitfalls Valvrave fell into.

Gundam Build Fighters was apparently one of the best Gundam shows across the board. I know I loved it.

Nobunaga the Fool is still going, and I'm finding it enjoyable so far.

Nagi no Asukara surprised me. I thought it was just gonna be a semi-supernatural Slice of Life show, but turned out to be as dramatic as it was sweet. The time skip halfway was a very nice touch that really gave the story a kick.

Kyosougiga was... strange. Strange but good. It did end up making sense in the end, though. Mostly.

For the Spring?

Captain Earth looks like it will be the go-to series for Mecha. The Protagonist is shaping up to be one of my favorites of the year, and it's only been two episodes.

Marvel Disk Wars: The Avengers is my Guilty Pleasure of the season. It's basically Pokemon/Digimon with the Avengers themselves being the 'Mons. Yes, that is exactly as messed up as it sounds. I'm interested in what a Japanese Shounen take on Marvel is gonna end up like. Also, Spider-Man. The first episode even had a cameo by Agent Coulson.

Seikoku no Dragonar (Boy meets Dragon, which comes in the shape of a Girl. Minor fanservice, Harem seems imminent) seems like fun. I'll watch a few more episodes to be sure.

I have a few other shows on my Que, so more to come later.

I am enjoying log horizon, and will start watching Gundam build fighters soon.

I saw Puella Magi Madoka Magica (all of it) a sleepless night recently. I have been pretty turned off anime for a good, long while... but this was amazing!

Did you see the Rebellion movie as well or just the TV series.

Series only.

Well Log Horizon was awesome.

And I did watch all of Kill la Kill... Though I almost quit the idiotic show after episode 2. Still after the boyfriend said "Keep watching it gets better" I found myself liking the characters by the end... and that redeemed the show for me. The only part of the show I didn't see coming a mile away was when

Spoiler:
They revealed the two were sisters
definitely worth watching even if it doesn't rank among the best anime.

I was actually upset when Log Horizon was over...I want the next season now! >.>

Is it wrong that when I watch Pacific Rim, every time they say the word 'jager' I picture this instead?

Man I loved Zoids when it was on Toonami.

I wish it had an actual ENDING though instead of being like "BIG F*~!ING BRONTOSAURUS ROBOT. THE END!"

I had heard that Toriyama was doing another manga, but this news just blew my mind... Goku's mom... ?

I've seen the raw for two out of four episodes for that Lodoss series.... each one is 2:00 minutes long. Which is probably the reason why no one has picked it up yet to stream (given how short each episode is, why not get all of them first then sub them).

I also finally sat down to watch Space Pirate Captain Harlock.... I was pleased with how well it was animated. Toei did an amazing job. I didn't like how emo Harlock seemed in this, but even that couldn't restrain his awesome! I also enjoyed the song used during the closing credits, Be The Light by One Ok Rock. All in all, Shinji Aramaki did a fine job on this one.

Captain Harlock...man I still have a hard time getting my mind to recognize the series by it's actual name.

My mind kind of has it locked in as Albator, the most awesome cartoon I had ever seen on the French CBC as a kid.

I have got to get my hands on the recent CG movie they did of it.

By coincidence I'm watching the Harlock Saga now.
Wotan with two eyes? WTF?

Anyway, we watched the CGI film not long ago and were rather disappointed. It looked beautiful, but I never felt it really was Harlock on screen.
As far as ridiculous plots go, it was...heh. I know the Matsumoto-verse continuities are a mess rivalling Doctor Who, so I suppose I shouldn't really complain about this one but it was pretty pointless to my mind. If I had at any point felt I was actually seeing Harlock on screen rather than someone who just looked like him (however awesome he looked) I probably wouldn't have minded, but the changes they did to the character and the Arcadia just ruined it for me.

Silver Crusade

well given what happened at the end... you may be more correct than you realize.

I look at it like this... this take on Harlock is a reboot of the franchise, much like the JJ Abrams Star Trek was. I didn't think that Harlock needed a reboot, but that's beside the point. He apparently needed to be made accessible to the modern zeitgeist (whatever that means). And this movie does that. If the characters we know and love are not acting like themselves, this is why.

I take it based on what I'm given. I liked it for what it is, something completely separate from what's come. That's how I'm able to deal with Abrams Trek (liked the first one, meh on the second). And those superweapons... they were just wow! Especially the Jovian Accelerator. I had heard theories, but to actually see it on display in this film was just awesome.

Don't know if anyone saw Miyazaki's latest, The Wind Rises, but I did last night.

Miyazaki really outdid himself with the animation, particularly the landscapes and scenery...it's almost impressionistic! (I'm a big fan of Claude Monet.) It's light on fantasy, which is unusual for Miyazaki; in fact, there's only one ambiguously fantastic element in the whole movie. Also, it did have power; I teared up when...

Spoiler:
Nahoko leaves for the mountains to die.

...But Jiro's constant exuberance was repetitive, and I felt the movie was a lot longer than it needed to be. Fans of the Slice of Life genre will probably disagree, but it was just too slow for me.

Well Captain Earth continues to be cool.

Nobunaga the Fool just got it's second Opening with the move of the action to the Western Star, and it's by none other than JAM Project!

Brunhyldr in the Darkness is an interesting series that I fear is gonna get really dark before it's all over.

So... Who else here has braved Daimdaler?

SAMAS, thanks for keeping me up to date. I need to finish Log Horizon first, then Gundam Build Fighters, then Nobunaga the Fool.

I watched 1 episode of Daimdaler......that was pretty much enough for me.

Chaika the Coffin Princess just threw an interesting twist into their story with what appear to be multiple copies of the title character but with different reasons for the same quest. Some interesting speculation on what it means when you combine that with the fact she was supposed to have been killed years ago anyway.

WIXOSS is going down the dark place and fast. Now that the full implications of what they are doing is known, our lead characters are not in a good place. This show is probably a good choice for those of you who liked Madoka. It's taken that whole "magical battles to win your heart's desire" concept and turned it into something very nasty and twisted.
Episode 5 pretty much brings our lead characters to a fork in the road and both girls are choosing the dark path willingly. Ruko might still turn back but I think Yuzuki is going all in, damned either way and not caring about it

DBZ fans rejoice! The prodigal son returns this fall! Oh, and Cowboy Bebop too!

Having it return in the form of Kai is a good thing, as all the unnecessary elements have been pared away to keep the action fast-paced. And since Toonami is both supposed to be the home for action and the one place most saw DBZ, this works out for everyone.

Facebook fans were told if they could get Toonami over 10,000 likes, CN would reward them in someway. And well, it would appear that this is reward.

Now... if we could just get this back, the nostalgia level will be over 9000!

Strictly speaking, I'm not big on Gundam, and I owned two Deathscythe shirts (loved that mech and its pilot). Wing's appearance on Toonami brought alot of American fans to the franchise and, of all the Gundams that aired on that block, that's the one which brings forth the nostalgia from the mid-30s crowd.

I liked the idea of the newtypes and how it seemed to be almost like the Force. But Amuro Ray bored me and in my mind Char 'The Red Comet' Aznable never got the respect he truly deserved (loved how his last name is a play on the word ansible, a device used to engage in superluminal communication). Wing Gundam reminded me of the RX-78-2 (which given its color scheme is a given) and that played to my dislike of Amuro as far as Heero Yuy was concerned. If I were to sit down and give those older shows another looksie, I might appreciate them more. But until that happens, I'm still a hater when it comes to Gundam.

Is it wrong that I've seen...maybe one episode each of Gundam and DBZ?

Anyhow, I've finally gotten around to SAO, and it's pretty much everything I ever wanted from an anime! Action, mystery, romance without too much fan service, lots of English words bastardized into Japanese, and no goggle-eye cutscenes. (I do find it amusing that there are no fat or otherwise unsightly female characters, though.) What could be better?

Freehold you really should be drawing a beam saber...

A man with conviction... I can respect that. But before you go all violent on me, you should let me actually go back and rewatch it from MSG on. Being older and wiser, I can admit to the possibility of being wrong. Can't do that if I've been 'dispatched' as a heretic.

However, if it is a duel you wish to have... draws the hilt of his beam saber and assumes a defensive stance before igniting the weapon

Just understand that Yoshiyuki Tomino was originally going to have Amuro die about halfway through the series, with the crew of the White Base having to ally with Char (who'd be given a red Gundam, no less), but finally having to battle him after he takes control of the Principality of Zeon. This concept gets explored somewhat in both Z Gundam and Char's Counterattack.

Again, it's not that I didn't watch Mobile Suit Gundam... it's just that when I did initially, I didn't go further than the surface. I just took it all at face value, which as a kid around 11 or 12 years old, meant that I wasn't looking for deeper subtext. I just wanted action. And when it came to that, I found MSG boring. But that may have been due to this simple fact: the enemy wasn't alien, but human. Again, I liked Char, but the Zeon were more or less human. Which was the point, after all. Star Blazers had the Iscandar and the Gamilons, Robotech had the Zentraedi, the Masters, and the Invid. Compared to that, the Zeon came off as... meh.

However, I do respect the franchise in spite of being a self professed 'hater'. Without Gundam, there'd be no Macross/Robotech. And without Gundam to serve as inspiration, del Toro's Pacific Rim would not have been the same.

Still, I can't say that I'd be looking forward to such an outcome.

Tequila.... my god, man! I thought you died or something. Glad to know you're still around and that you're enjoying SAO.

just came from episode 131 of Hunter x Hunter....

that series has time and again exceeded my expectations. I've seen the whole 11th hour power up in Shonen Action shows time and again but I don't think I have ever seen an author....break his main character with it.

That was a chilling and horrifically one sided fight.
