If that happened on 1655, the Poles and Lithuanians would got rid of Swedish much faster...

On the other hand if Carolus Gustavus held his soldiers in check and formally applied to Sejm for removal of his cousin from throne and putting him on, we could end in much better situation...

Sounds like you could use a Delorean, and a crack pot scientist with misappropriated funds and a yearning to visit the old west :-)

When I went to lunch it was not raining, so I left my umbrella. Now I guess I am waiting awhile before I head back. Ugh.

if it makes you feel better right now its just small cells moving thru NY so you should be good shortly, looks like a bigger more severe storm is heading for for later tho:-)

Silver Crusade

Yep. I see a break coming on. I have to dash the 5 blocks back to the office before it starts raining again!

i love readily available radar, just so happens i was checking the radar in a separate window, taking a trip downtown in a bit to fatten up the ducks, i only have a few months to get a duck fat so i can force feed it to a Turkey... that is how they make Turducken right? i haven't really had the best results personally...

Rain sounds like the least of NYC's problems, This morning on the news they were talking about an outbreak of legionnaires disease. I wasn't aware that one was still around

Glory to Rome! Long live the Emperor! ~rereads~ Sorry. Wrong Legion.

Ars Technica looks really interesting. Anyone know of any other good tech sites like this?

G@%*#%n bright out! Hard to keep track of kids and type at the same time, doesn't help that I polluted my phone's spell check with deliberate misspellings and general assault on it's grammar.

Sometimes, I almost feel sorry for it, sometimes.

Well, you must be familiar with El Reg and its twisted British take on IT. That's where I originally saw the story. It's fascinating how many different news outlets are reporting different aspects of the story. Things I have read include:

(1) The man's daughter was sunbathing in the backyard when the drone first appeared.
(2) The drone went away once when she 'shooed' it, she complained to her dad about it, and then the drone returned and continued 'harassing' her.
(3) Some articles say he knew it had a camera before he shot it, others say he didn't.

In any case, it's a rather awesome story because of the nigh-unanimous support of his decision. Even anti-gun people are admitting it's a pretty creative use of a gun.

NobodysWife put it really well: "If I called the police to complain about a drone hovering over my property, they'd say either it didn't merit their attention or they'd tell me there was nothing illegal about it. If I downed it and the owners became belligerent, there's nothing I could do to prevent myself from getting beaten up over it. So I have to say, in this case the guy used a shotgun to do his best to avoid collateral damage, then used the Glock in self-defense without even drawing it, so I really think he did everything right... what SHOULD happen is that the pervs who were filming his daughter should get charged..."

I must disagree. That was stupid and reckless. He should pay for damages and move on with his sad little life.

Or, better yet, take out the guys drone with one of his own! Then it would have been cool.

The last thing we need are idiots thinking birdshot solves all problems. I'm glad he's going to court.

Oh, thanks SO much Freehold! I'm going to IKEA with my mom tomorrow night so she can get me a mini-figure display case as a belated birthday present.

Now I'm going to be giggling maniacally and rubbing my hands together as I wander the store.

You just want to see me get arrested, don't you?

I notice you didn't correct the "a$!$~&%" part. :-)

I was wheeling all our bikes through the house while doing some work on the garage. My direct quote to NobodysWife:
"If you ever want to know the difference between a $1500 bike and a $300 bike, wheel all four bikes across the house. You'll know which bike cost $1500. Guaranteed."

It's REALLY amazing the difference the price makes. As usual, as you get older, you learn that you get what you pay for.

Oh, darn it! Actual work time. Feh!

oh no, he could still be an a&!@&%%. They all could be. I'm leaning towards the guy with the shotgun being an a&&&#~~ though, because I don't thinkthere was a reason to shoot the drone down. That would have gotten *him* shot in my neighborhood, but people are packed a lot tighter down by me and I'm sure someone would have been hit with the birdshot.

And oh hell yes. You get what you pay for. Usually.

Yes I would also lean to everyone being an a+@*+&~, it is Kentucky after all:-D

Infallible a%@++#+ detector: The drone operator is quoted as saying he was just using it to look at a friend's house.

"OK. What's your friend's name and address?"

Betcha dollars to donuts he has no answer. In which case, ta da! a%@++#+!

But I'd rather give it 6-8 weeks to see what actual evidence comes out and see whether we ever learn what REALLY happened...

LOL. It, Paizo, and the Onion are the only 3 sites I make sure to visit every day. And honestly, I frequently find the Register more amusing than the Onion. When the Onion hits, it hits a home run. But that's maybe once every couple of weeks... usually it's just, "Look, we get to use obscenities in our 'stories'", or, "We switched 'man' with 'woman' and now it's funny."

But as I said, once every couple of weeks it's got something really inspired...

Yep. I pointed Impus Major to that one, proving that Malek will indeed conquer the world.

And yeah, yeah, I'm "working". But when the app is so broken you have to manually build a massive security hierarchy that was supposed to be done "automatically", you find your mind wandering back to less repetitive and tedious tasks... frequently...

Pardon me for asking, but what do you do for a living?

I'm a "technical curriculum developer" for a major software company that shall remain nameless so I can gripe about it with impunity. :-P

So my job is to get all the pre-release software, get it installed and configured, work out how to customize it (customize the look-and-feel, modify the underlying database schema, script automated processes, etc.), and then teach other people to do the same.

And let me tell you, if you've ever complained about software documentation, just get a job where you're stuck with the pre-release documentation.

And of course,

NobodysHome's Story Time:

A few years ago we were making a major release from version n to version n+1. So I grabbed all the installer images, checked and installed all the prereqs, and tried to run the installer... and it failed. Again. And again. And again.
So I contacted the PM. "Are you sure this installer works?"
"Yes, NH, of COURSE it works! It passed QA!"
So I tried a couple more times. And I went back to the PM. "Can you put me in touch with someone who's installed it so I can find out what I'm doing wrong?"
"Sure, NH!" (She and I got along really well.)
So she searched, and she searched, and she searched.

And she learned that:
- The engineers didn't use the installer because it took too long; they just copied in the database, executables, and registry entries on clean machines.
- The QA people didn't use the installer because the engineer's method was faster.
- I was the first person EVER, in the 18 months of development, to actually try to install from scratch on a clean machine.

So she had the engineers re-test, and sure enough, the installer was broken.

I managed to file a P0 bug (product cannot release with this bug) two weeks before general release.

Great fun! And altogether too common to learn that I'm the first one trying to do XXX. (Just a few weeks ago I was trying to perform an integration, and the accompanying file set was corrupt. No one had noticed in a year. In other words, no one else had tried it. *SIGH*)

End of story time!

EDIT: As we used to say in the Wind River training department: "There are plenty of people in the company who know more about a specific area of the product than we do, but NO ONE knows more about the overall product, its functionality, and its quirks than we do!"

Instructors: The ultimate generalists.

It's too much for me. It's why I don't work real construction anymore. The reason yesterday was even post-worthy was because of how unusual it was. Normally, I'm on a construction site in the later stages of being finished, doing more precision work instead of grunt work.
