I'm curious if anyone else is having romantic relationships with the NPCs

My character fell for Ameiko, and now they are an item. (and she's pregnant, though they don't know that yet.)

Anyone else have any love stories to share?

Thanks

Uh, no, but it would be funny to know what kind of DC he had to beat to get the bun in the oven :)

The only recent opportunity for love in my campaign ended with the wizard leaving his admirer to die in a horrible siege...

5% chance, And I rolled just that. He chuckled and said, I rescued Ameiko, had a night of passion, and she'll be having a chat with you in 1-2 months.

It was kinda cool, a Varisian/Asain is on the way.

When I was a kid, my PC married an NPC appearing in Dragon magazine (well before issue 100). Terrible that I don't remember her name. She was a character from literature, translated into a D&D statblock and description... an elf from another planet seeking to keep certain dimensional portals closed or some such.

The DM and players held an actual ceremony. The song Time by Alan Parsons Project was playing in the background. It was a hoot. They adventured together some then lived happily ever after. Aw. <:)

An elf character in RoRL had an affair (he is married) with Shalelu, it's a long story. The other players don't know yet. So in nine month the baby will be around when the giant attack.

Unfortunatly, everyone I've played with upright refuses to have relationships of anykind with NPCs. To quote the usually response, "Having anykind of relationships in the game is bad. The DM always uses it against you."
So most of the time when I run games I either have players with no background history, or who are loners and all their family/lovers/friends just recently died.

For the right NPC spouse, my PC will be only too happy to retire from adventuring. (But only after 8th level... a man needs to sow his wild bloodshedding oats, after all.)

Liberty's Edge

You know, I had joked around how thistletop was kind of like a soap opera, the way one person swooned over another, who scorned her for someone else, ect, but I suppose that my group is building up a bit that way as well.

We have a cleric who is played to be rather naive in things and is always somewhat flirting with one of the other PCs, though she hasn't taken much notice yet because he's not very good at it, and of course because at the moment her character has quite a crush on Aldren and promised to come visit him soon before being swept into all the events at the end of burnt offerings.

There also is our wizard who I think has come to fancy himself as something of a ladies man after his heroism during the goblin raid won him some attention from the various women around town, including Shayliss. That romance has been somewhat put on hold however, due to interference of her father(which has caused the character to hide out whenever in town and avoid town when possible), and that he has taken something of an eye for Shalelu on their one meeting.

Now we just had two more females join the group and one of them is already showing a bit of jealous that the original girl has the clerics attention while the other has seemed simply too shell shocked at the idea that the group accomplishes anything at all, after they explained to her that several of their key goblin fighting strategies revolved around the use of pickles, to have developed any infatuations yet. But I suppose we'll see.

And then of course there is the gnome with his murdermaw obsession. But we'll just leave it at that...

My wizard, Hamburg, is currently involved with Shayliss Vinder. What started as an innocent rat hunt turned into a bloodless, but dangerous war with her father. A botched bluff check in the basement led to a lucky color spray escape.

Later, at the conclusion of Burnt Offerings, our adventuring party threw a party at Ameiko's inn and invited all the movers and shakers in town. Ven's family's invitation was a bit different than the others passed out, in that it announced a wake in memorium of my character. Ven was quite displeased when he arrived to find me whole and hale.

Worse, was later that night when a pair of invisibility spells led to Shayliss and I making our escape from the party. While we were gone, the DM decided to segue into the second adventure with the discovery of the stuff that happens at the mill (thread title doesn't have spoilers in it).

I missed the following game session, so for a while, my wizard was a suspect. When we returned, it was with a cover story that we had run off and gotten married, which, strangely enough, seems to have brought an end to the hostilities between and his "new stepfather".

Shayliss is acting like they really did get married, so Hamburg is a bit confused, but going with the flow for now. Besides, he's about to leave on a trip to Magnimar, and she's still got her final year at Turandarok Academy to finish, so she'll be staying with her folks while he's gone.

He's still trying to find a way to tell Shayliss about his other girlfriend, a priestess of Desna that he met on the boat to Sandpoint, but parted ways with in Magnimar. It hasn't come up so far, but knowing my DM's love for dramatic moments, she'll wander back into Hamburg's life at just the right time.

In our group relationships between NPC's and PC's are fairly common and pretty common between PC and PC. All the players are male since I run the majority of the time.

Do you use it against them? I mean if its a justified complaint then I see where their coming from. Otherwise its simply reading one too many issues of KOTDT.

I had scenes like this when I was a kid too. But my group was mixed gender of 11-13 year olds and and calling what we were playing 'D&D' really stretches the term. It was more like 'excuse to talk about sex in mixed company when we'd otherwise all be far to shy to do so'.

Yeah... the games back then broke in impromptu LARP fights pretty dern quick if there were plastic swords laying around.

its wierd the differences between all boy games and boy/girl games. my last group was an all boy game, and they would all boink anything that fit the general discription. this new group is a boy/girl group, and so far the subject hasnt come up at all at all. (although, it was pretty funny when a satyr grappled the girl swashbuckler and started hauling her away from a fight) its still a different atmoshere.

party:

boy player(age: 21ish, college student) boy rogue
girl player(19ish, college student): boy paladin
boy player (21ish, bartender): boy wizard
boy player (30, soldier, iraq vet): boy sword sage
girl player(20ish, college student): girl warlock
girl player(17, high school student): girl swashbuckler

boy dm (40, retired soldier, iraq vet, construction): boy dm

the only romatic bit that i have been thinking of is sending a nymph (not a real one, but maybe) at the paladin.

Funny you bring uo KOTDT. My old group was the one who started me reading that. But no I wouldn't use their backgrounds or relationships against them, unless it 100% had to do with the moving the plot of the story.

Ok relationships and the fates of the players involved.

Sorcerer fell in love with Shayliss vonder and was engaged to be married. He died a horrible death.

Fighter and Shalelu were becoming lovers and then he upped and died.

Rogue is in a just budding relationship with Kaven now. So we are all waiting for the boot to drop.

Dark Archive

In my game, the sorcerer has developed a relationship with Shayliss, and her father has yet to find out. Another has taking a liking to Ameiko, and her the same. Unfortunatly for him, she is on her way to Korvosa looking for new glass workers. He has recently been exiled from the city due to an accused rape of a nobleman's daughter. He is innocent, but it will be interesting to see if he is able to talk his way out of it with a penalty to charisma... if she even finds about about his issue.

I have a few players who don't want to create relationships with npcs of any sort, because they believe it will only lead to trouble for them. The rest of my players are usually okay with developing relationships with npcs, although my exiled player is probably regretting it a little right now. Little does he know that it is hopefully simply going to force his character to come to terms with the issue, rather than avoiding it with booze.

Liberty's Edge

Most of my players take Leadership so they can have romantic cohorts. We have a Halfling with Shalelu, the Bard used to be with Shayliss until she died and now is with his Tiefling cohort and a Varisian woman who was passing the time away working at the Pixie's Kitten and now has a bun in the oven.

First of all... it's really cool to see all the NPC relationship stuff happening. That's ABSOLUTELY one of the things I was hoping would happen for groups who play through Runelords... or for ANY of our Adventure Paths. Relationships with NPCs, be they romantic or not, are a great way to invest a character in a storyline and a world.

I do, of course, understand the feeling that some players avoid getting entangled with NPCs out of fear that the GM might end up using those connections to screw the PC over. If there's a vibe like that going on in your group, I STRONGLY suggest that you take pains to ensure that, unless the PCs themselves do something to place their NPC pals in danger (such as, "Hey Shayliss! Wanna come explore a goblin lair with me?"), you should strongly resist the urge to use them against the PCs. Build the trust, and then once in a while if you DO use a kidnapped lover or a similar plot thread, your players will react more positively. In theory, at least.

My party's down to three players (sob! Anyone near Coschocton with free saturday nights?) and our chemestry suffers from 3 problems.

1) new player who while prone to bursts of creativity is still wrestling with the rules.
2) Paranoid player who believes anything does can and will be used against him.
3) My poor ability to breathe life into the NPCs.

Now the Greyhawk group here in Columbus (5 players, 1 DM, between 6/7 characters) is going to be interesting, Tony does a much better job with breathing life into the NPCs
1) Wizard who's trying to be studious also playing...
2) Baby silver dragon with a penchant for trouble
3) Monk with vow of cheese, I mean poverty
4) Ranger, played by the above new player
5) Bard, who's actions are loosely based off of Captain Jack Sparrow.
6) My character, Human Endless (from dragon magazine) Arcane Legionary based off of Captain Jack Harkness. And...
7) Trapfinding class of somekind, if needed. Changling Psychic Rogue comes to mind. :-)

Should make Expedition to Castle Greyhawk, interesting.

Very cool.

My charatcer now is probably going to push the married route, and I do plan to have "the wedding game" as thats something I could find fun to role play. As an aftersight, marrying Ameiko puts me in a very powerful position it seems in the future, though that was not my motivation.

To whom it may concern: Please don't kill of Ameiko in future paths please!

How we think alike then, I'm taking Leadership to add Ameiko as a cohort just for that reason. "IC" I would want my wife with me, but the child thing throws a stick in the wheel spoke now.

"Amekio catch!" Deivo tossed a bundled child to his wife. Ameiko catches it easily but gives Deivo the look...

"Hey, it was my turn to stab the bad guys!" She pouts.

I still plan on doing it, maybe Bethana wouldn't mind watching the kid as we adventure.

Yellow , you just gave me a great idea

My elf player has been running around in Sandpoint and Magnimar ...

Otherwise , the same elf is trying to pick up Ameiko. Being no dummy, she is a bit suspicious about HIS feelings.
Strangely , he has made no pass towards Shalelu who,in my game, is looked by the players as a BAD GIRL who kick ass.

The wizardess , I think , was beginning to feel touched by Aldern devotion. Since the revelation he was married then a wife murderer then a ghast, let's just say she has foresworn love for a bit.

My draconian character is engaged to Shayliss Vinder. Apparently they're getting married at some kind of spring festival. She's been living with him and running the weapons shop he has going while he's away.
Funny thing is she asked him after he saved the town for what was it, third time I think.
Geez the things a guy's gotta do to impress a girl.

Now I get the fun of playing him all distracted while we go beat some giants.

Yeah in our group it took awhile for the group to be comfortable and trusting enough to really get into RPing. To many of them was use to GM's who used anything to screw them over just cause they could. Now that the trust is their that no matter what it won't happen often and no matter what it will be fun, they have gotten into it. Our group is just starting a new game and will be starting RotRL soon. I can forsee already a couple of potional NPC's that will intrigue the PC's, who was just made this past week.

One of the things I enjoy most about Pathfinder so far is the feeling that was instilled while going through the scenarios, that this is something for me to 'protect.'

I'm not just passing through town and heading to the 'magic shop' or 'arms shop.' It's a nice feeling to get a pat on the back for a good old goblin slaying. If I didn't get a room in the Rusty Dragon for free, having successfully wooed Ameiko, I was planning on building a house or buying one in town.

I like the slow build up from nothing to hero thats happening. This really is great.

Seoni and I are engaged. :P

Sovereign Court

Valeros comes by occassionally and drinks all my beer, but I wouldn't really call it a relationship. Well, there was that one time...

Anyway,

The sultry Varisian bard in my game is currently sleeping with Sheriff Belor Hemlock. It's a nice little arrangement they have, both of them very busy people, but I'm not sure she approves of his use of the Shoanti red leaf in lovemaking. We'll see how it goes.

The Elven Duskblade toys with the idea of a relationship with Shayliss Vinder (she came with them to Magnimar), but I think he just enjoys the looks on the other players' faces when he suggests it.

The half Chelaxian, half Varisian Cleric of Serenrae is really too nice for his own good. Doting mothers in Sandpoint keep trying to fix him up, but he's shy.

The Dwarven Paladin has a drinky/flirty relationship with a blacksmith in Magnimar's Bazaar of Sails, but she's not really looking for anything serious. She fled Janderhoff to avoid an arranged marriage and she'd rather not be tied down.

The Elven Sorceress is quickly growing too intemperate and alien to attract your average beau (she has a snake familiar and pursuing the Elementalist, Air PrC - or the Pathfinder Alpha Elementalist Sorcerer. If only it had come out before game this weekend. *stare stare* ;)). The player feels a little left out of the love fest, so I might make a geeky little golemnist Wizard for her.

Yeah, my game's 15% soap opera.

Yeah it really takes a mature group that is comfortable with each other. Which means typically your friends and hang out, outside of RPing so people are more comfortable with each other.

It can add a lot to the game if it is done right. We have found to just let things happen RP wise. In other words they just RP their characters and if it happens they go with it.

This got me thinking. The one game I DM has romantically involved PCs and NPCs. The players are all happily married couples, so there's no, um, undertone in the roleplay. In other games I've played in, with single people, there's almost no romantic roleplay, because it becomes far too awkward (ie. possibly meaningful).

The other game I play is all men - but all gay men (yup me too), and there is absolutely no hint of romantic roleplay at all. It just doesn't come up. It would probably f**k up table dynamics.

And now that I think about it, the only time I roleplay romantic relationships is with my female friends' PCs.

So...if anyone at the table could possibly be attracted to each other, just kill lots of stuff. If not, then feel free to roleplay romance!

;)

RPG Superstar 2013 Top 8

Let's see...

The game started with two of the characters as secret lovers; the Shoanti wu-jen was a "kept man" of a prejudiced, insane Chelish rogue. Who was promptly killed by goblins in the raid--Sulik's done a nice job of getting over him.

The ranger, Mizelli, was an omnisexual attention whore. She twisted Ameiko's friendship into a romantic relationship, trying to buy her affection with various treasures, all the while clumsily flirting with Jakardos, the Black Arrow archer. Ameiko, increasingly uncomfortable, broke the whole thing off when Mizelli nearly got a quarter of the town eaten by the Sandpoint Devil; Mizelli paid Ameiko "for her services" explicitly to piss her off.

Orik Vancasserskain was "rescued" by the party from his life of petty thuggery when they hired him away from Nualia to guard Ameiko's Glassworks. He has something of a crush on Evangeline, the party's knight, and used her training in shield-fighting techniques to spend time with her. Evangeline didn't really seem to notice the attention very much, but her unicorn cohort is getting increasingly jealous...

Neimand was King of Goblins. As such, he had a harem, inherited from Bruzanthamus, who stole it from Ripnugget. He tried to move them into the Rusty Dragon, but Ameiko wouldn't have any of it. Since he couldn't take them with him to Fort Rannick, he tried (and failed) to incorporate the female PCs into a new harem. Shortly before his retirement as a lone bardic wanderer, his harem was stolen by Gnalk, a nilbog. Since nilbogs make everyone around them act the complete opposite of their normal behavior, the harem was last seen as completely clothed, loving mothers.

Dahlia, a battle dancer, is a shameless xenophile. She's currently smitten with the construct librarian in Mokmurian's dungeon, despite the fact that they share no common languages.

Aylen is a cleric of Calistra, and she's currently contemplating seducing one of the party members as a sacrament to her lusty goddess. The fact that the entire party consists of gnomes and other women probably does not put a damper on these plans.

Half of my group are married dads with at least 2 kids a piece. One guy is divorced, remarried, with a new(ish) toddler. No one seems to be interested in their characters picking up a "D&D girlfriend".

But I still mess with them a little bit. One of my friends made a big deal about how big the ears were on the picture of Shelelu. So I transferred the big ears comment to his dwarven character. Whenever Shelelu deals with the party, she acts like she knows the dwarf has a crush on her becuase of the size of her ears.

I think I'm the only one who thinks it's funny. "Huge tracts of land" or "Huge ears". Close enough right?

One of the characters tried to make Shayliss Vinder an honest woman, but she dumped him after moving in with him and him bringing up the "M" word. He even paid her father a warhorse for her (a damn good Shoanti brideprice!). I think that's what upset her....

I also have one PC being the current recipient of Orik's affections, but that PC so far is not interested.

Only played one game session so far, but..

* The party Monk was caught pants down with Shayliss and got chased out of the house holding his pants up. He's currently considering sneaking into Shayliss's bedroom to finish up.

* The tall, dark and uncharismatic party ranger managed to pull off some nice heroics in view of Aldern Foxglove. Ever since the goblin raid, Aldern's been a real pain in the derriere showering said ranger with affectionados (thoroughbreds and such).
