The Ultimate Reward

Every adventurer dreams of glittering treasures and magical relics, and such remarkable rewards spur the quests and ignite the imaginations of history’s greatest heroes, driving them to greatness—or their doom. Yet above coins of gold and gem-studded baubles rise those riches that are themselves the envy of kings, the causes of calamities, and the stuff of legends. With the power to slay titanic beasts, reduce whole castles to ruin, and change the flow of fate, such mythic items fill the stories of sages and treasure seekers the world over. And now, the greatest of these wonders rest within your hands.

This compendium of curiosities reveals the magic and legacy of 10 of the most famous and infamous items and artifacts in the history of fantasy roleplaying. From the head-slicing swipes of the vorpal sword to the awesome magical might of the staff of the magi, the depthless bag of holding to the world-warping deck of many things, the investigations within reveal the mysterious creations, cunning uses, magical variations, and untold other secrets of these ultimate treasures.

No matter the campaign setting, Classic Treasures Revisited unleashes a hoard of history’s greatest magic items upon your game—along with all the adventures they inspire—and proves that true treasures never tarnish.

    Highlighted treasures include:
  • Bag of Holding
  • Cube of Force
  • Deck of Many Things
  • Figurines of Wondrous Power
  • Helm of Brilliance
  • Horn of Valhalla
  • Sphere of Annihilation
  • Staff of the Magi
  • Vorpal Sword
  • Well of Many Worlds

This Pathfinder Chronicles book works best with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Core Rulebook and the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Bestiary. Although it is suitable for play in any fantasy world, it is optimized for use in the Pathfinder Chronicles campaign setting.

Classic, Treasures...awesome

5/5

Just wrote a review of this on my blog. Wonderful item. Lots of possibilities with this book.

Epic RPG Blog - Classic Treasures Revisited review

Another great "Revisited" book

5/5

Paizo continues the trend that began with Classic Monsters Revisited. Take something cliche and beaten to death, refresh it, revamp, spit, polish and make it shine.

This time, the classic D&D magic items undergo this treatment. The most commonly referenced treasures such as vorpal weapons, bags of holding or figurines of power are re-imagined in this volume.

And like it's predecessors, this book is above and beyond. The ideas, backstories and variant items are just amazingly creative, fun, imaginative and well presented. Instead of scouring obscure splatbooks or pondering the 3.5 Magic Item Compendium, one can just take this book and breathe new life into the old classics.

Special shout-out to my favourite Paizo author, Todd "Shemeska" Stewart, for his chapters on Well of Many Worlds and Sphere of Annihilation. Both are brilliant gems of unrestrained, crazy, creative writing.

Outstanding book

5/5

I am a huge fan of the Revisited series of books Paizo has been releasing and have plans to release. This book took my attention from the moment I picked it up and flipped through the pages.

It is an outstanding read. It covers how these iconic "D&D" items are created, how they fit into the Pathfinder world and how adventures use it. I also like the how it shows that these items are not one dimensional (no pun intended) and are constantly being adapted in the modern game.

I HIGHLY recommend this book to both GM and player as there is so much you can get out of it. 5 out of 5.

Return of the Classics

4/5

Geek moment: FIRST !!! ok I'm alright now.

My most excellent praises for this latest work.
The only possibile critique would be, that there are no pictures of the alternate versions of these items. All in all on par with your usual product. You realize we are spoiled now and expect everything else to be better

This book is going to be unbearably cool. Bated breath for the Bag of Holding chapter.

Meh, no Wand/Rod of Wonder. I weep.

I like the line up you do have though. Should be a great book.

Huh well this should be interesting.

Wow, yet another quality item on the block. Really glad to see how things are going to proceed for the Pathfinder RPG.

interesting. I've found the Dungeon Denzins revisited very useful.

No Belt of Masculinity/Femininity?

Very interesting though... I'm looking forward to seeing what's done with vorpal swords.

Figurines and the deck for me. I always loved those things.

Well it does say, "Highlighted treasures include". That tells me that there is more to it than the tresures listed in the description.

Very cool. Could this be the product that Sean was working on when he asked for OGL Ioun Stones? I hope they're in the book!

Nope, the ioun stone stuff is for Seekers of Secrets... which is partly why ioun stones aren't a featured item in this book (we don't want to repeat material between the two, or have one be a less-than-complete look at the subject).

Wow. I am positively excited. It's been awhile since I've given out some of the treasure on that list and I think it would be nice to deviate from the "Big Six" and go classic.

Awesome.

Good point.

Interestingly, of the listed treasures, the past week has seen references around my house to:
Sphere of Annihilation
Figurines of Wondrous Power
Deck of Many Things
Bag of Holding

And keep in mind, we've not played D&D in months. When the boy presented a scenario and said, "The best way out of that is to use a Sphere of Annihilation and..." I felt I had to shut him down quickly!! :D

Wow...damn guys something else I want

To be honest, I'm torn between "?" and "this is going to be interesting".

Will there be anything beyond the treatments of those items?

Some treasure tables perhaps?

Art descriptions?

Coinage fluff?

Plz?

"Coinage fluff"?

64 pages! That could almost mean 64 items or so! Amulet of the Planes, Cubic Gate, Robe of the Archmagi, and my favorite The Rod of Lordly Might! A MUST HAVE BOOK for any D and D FAN!

The format of the book will be similar to the other Revisited books we've done; 10 chapters of 6 pages each for all of the mentioned items. There'll certainly be a lot of art in the book, and there might be some sort of tables or something (not sure what, but if there are, they'll be small and highly focused), but there won't be any talk about other types of treasure, really, including coins.

Oh man. Another sale, right here. This looks fantastic.

Although I second the call for a chapter on the Rod of Lordly Might. Probably too late for that now, but if this sells well, there could always be a sequel...

What he said. RoLM! That was the first NFW item in my gaming experience. Implausible, wondrous, the sexy.

I... I want this book... so bad. It actually aches.

Me too, the deck of many things was such a staggering find, and the figuries could not have been more aptly named, but I picked up a vorpal sword in one of the G modules and it changed my life. Made me the am I am today.

"Day of Al'Akbar" for me. A dwarf fighter/thief with a vorpal short sword... Those were the days :)

Okay, so really it's more like "Classic Artifacts Revisited". I can dig that.

Although I was sort of hoping for a throwback to Gygax-style insanely intricate loot descriptions... ah well.

6 pages isn't intricate enough for you? :)

Helm of Brilliance and the "Jeweled Life" for me!

I have to say... I know it's only a mock-up cover, but the temporary art for this is truly perfect. I honestly wouldn't mind if it were kept.

No Holy Avenger? Seelah and Iomedae are going to be pissed.

I really don't see how you're going to be able to get six pages of material for each item. Two or three certainly, but six? I'd much rather see a book with 20-30 items rather than just 10. Feels like overkill, though Paizo's yet to really let me down from what they've/you've promised.

Hope you all can pull it off.

You'd be surprised how quickly the proposed item's writeup for this book fills.

Assuming you can parse the weird grammar in that sentence.

With that kind of limited weapon reach, how does a dwarf even hop up to where the opponent's head is? Such a weapon needs accompanient by an equally enchanted highchair.

Always with the short jokes this one...

I actually had a similar debate with my DM at the time. Eventually I pointed out to him that "dead is dead" and said my dwarf would chop off the giant's head... eventually. You see, in my book, starting at the ankles and working your way up one chop at a time counts. :)

I also remember my dwarf ended up with some sort of theme song based on a jingle for a food processor, maybe the veg o matic?

LOL... I take your point.

Horn of Valhalla... awesome! this northman can't wait...

What is going to be interesting about the Horn of Vahalla that will be interesting is how it fits in with the Golarion Campaign setting.

(Since, as a Chronicles Book, this is supposed to be campaign specific)

We have Ulfen, this might be a good glimpse into their particular afterlife.

Paizo Employee Director of Game Development

The thing I'm most excited about this book for is the variants to these items we'll most likely see if this book keeps the same format for the Revisited books.

Should be very cool!

Awesome idea. When I saw it I immediately rushed to see what items are getting the revisit treatment. It's like you read my mind. Everything I'd most like to see is there.

Hint: Folks in Golarion would likely call it the "Horn of the Linnorm Kings" or something like that, but nothing else will change. In fact, this'll hopefully be a cool opportunity to show how easy a flavorful item is to import across campaigns by changing only the name to fit a similar theme in the destination world.

I really like that name. It's lore-steeped and it would make me feel kingly for owning it.

True! But changing the name aside, it might also be a good way to describe how the item interacts with the setting... above and beyond changing the name. Just like in the Classic Monsters series we see how each creatures is part of the setting.

That is a cool name, BTW.

Is the Stick of Studliness (aka Rod of Lordy Might) going to be one of the items detailed in the book?

That was actually my first thought... followed by the original Wand of Force (AKA "AD&D's take on Light Sabers")

Gamer Concepts used to have a t-shirt "Let me show you my Rod of Lordly Might"... OK, so it's an old joke, but still sold a few.

About that horn, think you could provide stats for the summoned barbarians? I hate the 3.5 DMG's npc stat blocks, and these barbarians are constructs as well.

Yeah, we'll definitely have stat blocks for the summoned warriors.

Will there be any info on cursed versions of these items?

The book has a section for each chapter called Related Items that addresses items with similar effects (the bag of holding chapter will talk about haversacks and portable holes, frex), and the outline says if there are cursed forms of the item, discussion of them goes there as well.
