Great writing, great art, great extras!

5/5

First the writing is much better than in the previous issues.
One can notice that someone who knows the universe and rules wrote it. Also Valeros and Amiri are kind of fun to listen to as the both lie a lot.

The art is also pretty good and shows many different situations.

The extra value part is great: You get an article about someone mentioned in the comic story and also a great mini flip-mat of an old temple with a mini-scenario and on the other side a poster of the "Pathfinder Unchained" cover.

An Exciting Tale With A Few Unpleasant Flaws

3/5

The meat of this issue, the first of a new series, is quite excellent. There are clever twists, exciting battles, wicked magic and heroic fighters. The ending is ... well, unpleasant, as has been helpfully spoiled in another posted review here, but it opens up possibilities for more stories, which makes up for a lot.

The bigger problem is, the tale's framing story opens up with Sheila Heidmarch doing something extremely out of character and basically insulting the iconics to their faces. I really don't think that someone as clever about handling people as she is would do that, even if she did have her doubts about them. Surely there were better ways that the reader could have been reminded that these are somewhat disreputable people.

Still, it's a reasonably good start to the new series, and I look forward to next time.

A pleasant surprise!

4/5

While I have enjoyed some of the prior issues featuring these characters, I was very pleased with this one.

The writing was clean, the juxtaposition of the flashbacks as they are told verses what really happened as shown in the art was a nice touch and my favorite part. It wasn't perfect but then again, I was not looking for that.

In all it was fun and represented a complete tale. If you like the setting and the previous tales then you will assuredly enjoy this one.

At least, that's my opinion.

Valeros looks good in the spotlight

5/5

I've been getting all the Pathfinder Comics as they've been coming out. I've enjoyed them all thoroughly, but this is the first one that's had me smiling page after page.

The story presented for Valeros is a perfect way to encapsulate his character. We even get a solid taste of Amiri in Origins #1, which is a welcome addition to the tale. I would have assumed both iconics to have a friendly, but competitive relationship, and the one presented in the comic supports and develops that. My other major praise has to be the dialogue. All of it is so in character and wholly entertaining. The one-liners delivered by Valeros alone had me chuckling. In addition, all of the minor jokes, both visual and written, all fit seemlessly within the larger story without detracting from its impact.

I hope the rest of these are as entertaining, and I look forward to the next installment.

Stabbin' all the things!

1 person marked this as a favorite.

But why is amiri on the cover?

Its when Amiri meets Valeros. Also they probably figured it would be a better lead in.

I am looking forward to the next series set. Will it also me a six issue run or one issue per iconic? If it is limited, which six iconics will be featured? I just looked at the comics page and this will be a six issue run. Which six iconics will be featured? (Or, will there be more than one iconic per issue?) Will there be another series with the remaining iconics?

As an aside, does Dynamite Entertainment have any plans to offer pdf versions of their comics (and associated posters/maps) for sale? (I really like the posters and maps, but I don't much care for the creases the folding creates - it really detracts from the image when displayed.)

They have said it is two iconics per issue.

Is this part of the comic subscription?

They're not PDF format, but Dynamite does offer Pathfinder comics (along with their other titles) digitally through Comixology.

So the exclusive cover of Valeros is Amari?
Good call.

'cause that's not sarcastic or passive-aggressive at all *sigh

Is it a website glitch that shows I am subscribed to this product line yet the last item to ship was City of Secrets #6 and the next one is Origins #2-Kyra?

My February subscription order did not include Origins #1-Valeros. Should I expect it to arrive with the March order? If so, its not listed.

I'm amused by Kevin Mack's one-star review, based on the last panel of the story. "Pathfinder Origins" is a SIX-part story. Stay tuned, is all I can say. :)

Personally, I hope the iconic characters do evolve and develop through the comic series (for better or worse - up to and including death).

I like the approach you take in APs and sourcebooks (where the world is pretty much "static" so it doesn't matter what order you incorporate the different books). I view the comics as different though - more as one, specific iteration of Golarion rather than a further addition to canon.

If every story arc ends with the iconics living happily ever after, I'm going to find it hard to keep caring about them, I suspect.

To be fair the inital hook that sets up the series made it sound like 6 stand alone tales. Also maybe ive miss read the final panel but that seemmed to indicate Amiri in the comics present so I can only assume the last book is some sort of tie all the loose threads together in the present type affair.

So in the meantime review removed.

The whole thing with Sheila Heidmarch is a framing device that weaves through the issues (subtly) and goes through to the last issue in the series (#6), which I also wrote, incidentally.

Okay, prediction registry -- which iconics are going to guest star in the upcoming issues?

I'm guessing that we're going to see Sajan teamed with Merisiel (CN acrobatic rogue teamed with LN acrobatic monk), Harsk teamed with Lini (there were some hints that the two of them were better acquainted than either was saying back in Pathfinder #4) and Lem teamed with Ezren in the final issue, which will hopefully tie up the loose ends of the previous five stories.
