Hi,
I plan to play a beast rider (BR) cavalier.
We will start at level 4 and now the problem hit. :)
The BR Archetype says that at level 4 I can choose a Lion as mount (what would be awesome).
The normal Lion is Large and due to this would suite as mount, but the Druide animal companion one is medium.
As the BR mount count as animal companion is the mount medium (and not usable by me) or large?
From my point of view it makes no sense to give a class an ability which can't be used at the level the class get it.
So based on this I would say that the player should get a large lion, otherwise he can't use his class ability.
Anyone knowns if there is some official errata/comment for it?

So you've got a couple of options, you can remain with your standard mount. You can take the Undersized Mount feat and retrain it. Or you can ask your GM to give you the size-increase earlier.
You can also start off as a small race so you can ride the companion as is. There's also the Monstrous Mount feat which has a couple legitimate options (though not a lion)--I'm a huge fan of the worg companion, but that's still only medium.

There is still one serious limitations to trying to use Undersized Mount.
Most of the lvl 4 creatures, being Medium sized, don't have the carrying capacity needed to move effectively with an armored warrior on their back, much less while wearing any type of armor of their own. Even with the modifier for being a quadruped, pretty much any of the available mounts on the list are going to be at medium encumbrance just from the weight of the rider.
Once it's a large sized quadruped, however, weight really isn't an issue anymore.
I have to assume it's merely a silly oversight by the writers (Undersized Mount didn't even exist when the archetype was released).

I think I know how this ability make sense.
At 1st level a medium beast riders can choose a camel or horse mount
At 4th level, a Medium beast rider can also choose an allosaurus, ankylosaurus, arsinoitherium, aurochs, bison, brachiosaurus, elephant, glyptodon, hippopotamus, lion, mastodon, megaloceros, giant snapping turtle, tiger, triceratops, or tyrannosaurus as his mount.
At 7th Level the beast rider can choose any animal companion, which natural size is large or huge.
______________________________________________________________________If the mount is normally medium size at the level the beast rider choose it, apply the following changes:
- Size Large
- Ability Scores Str +2, Dex –2, Con +2;
- Increase the damage of each of the mount’s natural attacks by one die size.Once the mount grows large according to the animal companion progression, you exchange these changes for the stats provided in the animal companion entry.
This would mean a medium beast rider can select the named mounts at 4th level in large form, but they aren't as powerfull as the normal large version at level 7. Once the beastmaster hit level 7 they get their normal level 7 large stats.
I think this would make much more sense, what do you think?

?
bears have str of 18+
and how much is needed really?
a person is about 180 pounds.
gear is about 70 +/- ?
250 for light (and it CAN go to medium easy...)
even if you put +1 to int at level 4 :
level 4 bear has str of base 15+4 (level) + 1 level = 20 str
he can carry : 133+1.5 = 199.5 pounds at light load.
399 at medium.
boar is 2 less.

I notice you picked the two strongest options on the list....

I disagree with this. There is nothing on the level 4 entry that indicates the animals are large.
The 7th level ability states you can take a lvl 4 animal that is already medium and convert it to large, even if it normally wouldn't be large at 7th level.
Editing for clarification:
There are some animal companions that go from small to medium at 4th. There are some that go from medium to large at 7th. The 7th level Beastrider ability lets you have the option to select an animal companion that is large at 7th, or you can select one that was medium at 4th and convert it to large with the stated modifications. It does not even imply that the creatures that were medium at 4th suddenly increase to large.

He made it up and is asking "is this an appropriate house rule?"

Yes & No :)
I already talked to my DM and we both agree that this interpretation makes more sense from a game design view.
I think, maybe this is how this ability really should be and that it's just poorly written & formated.
I know that we will probably not get a official comment (or errata) to this here and that some of you are "RAW Fanatics", but I wanted to share my "fix" for this ability so others who have the same issue, don't have to made up one for their own.

level 4 bear has str of base 15+4 (level) + 1 level = 20 str
Where does the "+4 (level)" come from?
as far as I see an AC get +1 Str/Dex at level 3 and you can add an additional +1 with "Ability score increase"Which makes a Bonus of +2 for a total of 17 (bear) or 15 (boar)
did I miss something?
