Having successfully established a hideout in the city of Kintargo, the heroes of the growing rebellion are poised to take back the city. But before the Silver Ravens can strike against diabolic House Thrune, they must forge alliances with nearby tribes of aquatic elves and the free city of Vyre to cut off Cheliax's easy sea and land routes, forcing Lord-Mayor Barzillai Thrune to rely solely on his resources at hand to defend his control of Kintargo. Yet nothing is as simple as it seems, and the dangers awaiting the rebels are not always those that can be defeated with a spell or a sword. And, of course, Barzillai Thrune won't take these new developments lying down—what retribution might one of Cheliax's most dangerous inquisitors have in store for the Silver Ravens?

This volume of Pathfinder Adventure Path continues the Hell's Rebels Adventure Path and includes:

Continues going strong

5/5

This book continues what has been a good adventure path. Again, the book is broken down into single session sized side missions and a “dungeon”. The side missions are unique and remember-able and really contribute to the flavor of the area. The “dungeon” is the least dungeony feeling area I have seen in pathfinder and was a nice change of pace (see spoiler for details). My only complaint is that a lot of the dungeon is probably going to be skipped and the villain’s motivations don’t really make sense (again see spoiler for details).

Spoiler:
The “dungeon” is actually an opera house that is throwing a mascaraed ball. The PCs have to get themselves invited and then sneak in any armor or weapons they want to have with them (which I thought was a nice touch). The only problem is that they then must allocate time between exploring the dungeon and being political and there really isn’t enough time for both, so there is a good chance a lot of the content of the book is going to be skipped. The final fight is in the middle of the ball to save all of the guests at the ball, which is remember-able and dramatic … but the reasoning for why the villains would start the fight is poorly thought out. Even my players started wondering why they wouldn’t have done something this foolish.

The best Paizo AP?

5/5

*DISCLAIMER*: This is a single review for all adventures in this AP.
Hell’s Rebels is the best Paizo Adventure Path. Of all the AP, it is the one that’s most coherent, approachable and GM-friendly. This review applies to all 6 books because their quality and style are so consistent that you don’t even notice the fact that they were written by 6 different authors. Let me quickly list some of the most important things which Hell’s Rebels gets right:
1. It has a clear, believable and complex plot which goes from point A to point B to point C while at the same time allowing for multitude of side treks, optional quests and player-driven initiatives.
2. It goes full on Golarion. It touches upon core themes of the setting and is heavily nested in its history. It provides the much-anticipated opportunity to punch one of the biggest evils of the setting in the face. One warning: you can’t just lift HR and drop it into other settings without massive amounts of work.
3. The BBEG is front and center, introduced in adventure 1, encountered and fought against several times across the campaign. He’s evil, callous, quirky, nasty, brutal, amoral and good at being bad. He’s right up there with Ileosa from CotCT.
4. The campaign starts in one city and mostly stays there, with some small side-treks and one bigger detour which, fortunately, is also urban.
5. There is a cadre of sympathetic, recurring allied NPCs to play second fiddles to the PCs. There are also enemies whom you can interact in ways other than roll for initiative. The RP opportunities are plenty.
6. The cast of both allies and opponents is diverse in every sense of that word.
7. The players get opportunity to discover some of the setting’s secrets and, to a limited yet satisfying degree, reshape it without causing a Realm-Shattering Event.
8. The ending is epic to the core and fitting for a campaign of this scale and magnitude.
9. Episode 4 is a special issue with extra page count, longer adventure, more support material, an excellent article on Aroden and much, much more!
10. I love the blue colour theme for this AP AND Wayne Reynolds did the cover art. Double victory!

Best of the AP

5/5

I think Dance of the Damned is the best book of what is an absolutely stellar AP. Reading through, I liked Turn of the Torrent better, but in play Dance of the Damned really shone. (Fewer lawful allies that the group had to appease.)

Dance of the Damned had something for everyone. My fighty types enjoyed the underwater mission and the siege of Menador Keep, and the more diplomatic types had fun at the parties. I for one am always glad to see a segment of adventure where there is no expectation that initiative be rolled. Rebels provides these, and the best is right here. The reveal of the boss of the adventure in the Dismal Nitch was also particularly memorable.

The epic final adventure demands to be run in person and can be done in a day (though I imagine I could have made it work online as well.) The entire affair was definitely memorable for my players.

Get Ready, This Thing is Fancy Dress

5/5

(Note: I have only read / not run Dance of the Damned)

Have your player's character been studying their etiquette? Have they been learning all they can about fine dancing?

They may well need it to survive the rigors of the Dance of the Damned.

In contention (with part 4) for my favorite Adventure Path volume of all time Dance of the Damned finds the Silver Ravens leaving Kintargo behind to do a 'good-will' tour of the county surrounding it.

Although the book involves a number of standard sword and spell slinging affairs the real shining moments are literally spinning plates at a fancy dinner with a powerful NPC and the titular Dance of the Damned.

One note, this part of the adventure seems like the kind of section that requires a lot of work on the part of the GM. Set dressing and coordination and keeping everything rolling might be quite a challenge.

Dance of the Damned may need more prep work than some of the other volumes.

The art and writing, as usual, are fantastic

Worth it for the Set-Piece Alone

5/5

If the entire adventure were not a superbly-written continuation of your efforts to topple Barzillai Thrune's vile reign over Kintargo (it is, for the record) this volume would still be worth it for the party sequence alone.

A wonderful building sense of tension while the Party schmoozes with the high and mighty, culminating in one of my hands-down favorite sequences to date.

Volume three of my new favorite Adventure Path picks up the ball and just RUNS with it.

From Book of the Damned I: Princes of Darkness:

Mahathallah: Once a handmaiden of Pharasma, the Dowager of Illusions understands the temporary nature of all things better than most beings. It was said that she once begged her mistress to witness the moment of her own death and was granted her wish, f leeing to Asmodeus’s side in hopes of avoiding her fate. Now Mahathallah begins every morning as the beautiful celestial she once was, but ages throughout the day until she is little more than a repulsive skeleton. She cloaks herself in layers of illusion so as to never be reminded of the fate she has supposedly avoided.

I would have rather had Eiseth, the Erinyes Queen, to be honest. :)

Sweet! Was wondering what deity articles may be showing up! :3

I hope this one and the other volumes of this AP have some really interesting monsters that are not devils or related to hell in any way.

You do realize what this AP is about, yes?

That said, of COURSE we didn't limit ourselves to ONLY devils or Hell-themed stuff. But it's absolutely the strongest theme for the bestiary throughout.

Eiseth is cool... but trust me... Mahathallah is really interesting too. We've got plenty of fallen angel devils... she's more like a fallen psychopomp. In any event, once Hell's Rebels is out, it will be pretty obvious why she's one of the 3 deities we're doing articles for in this AP...

Updated? They're already updated. They've always been in Pathfinder stats.

Whether or not a cabal devil shows up in the AP, though... I can't say yet. It's certainly possible.

Some thoughts on the deity article...

First, while I like Eiseth better, Mahathallah is probably the much more interesting/unique whore queen to write about. Plus, I always love the deity articles, especially now that we're looking at more obscure entities. I really enjoyed the Zyphus one, for example.

On that note, Brigh and Zyphus received Deific Obedience information in their articles. As of now, the devils are the big missing spot for obediences, which seems... ironic.

Will we finally be seeing an Infernal Obedience option?

I'd like that to happen. Demons get them; poor devils and daemons get left out in the cold.

Of course, if that were to happen, we'd have to get some 'retconned' ones for archdevils and such.

Actually, there's room for a divine obedience AND an infernal obedience. Lamashtu gets both a divine obedience and a demonic obedience, after all.

Though I'd expect to just get the divine obedience (which is compatible with the ISG prestige classes), since there's no precedent for infernal obediences.

Will there be a map of Vyre (population 17.300) in the Hell´s Rebel´s map-folio? I imagine Kintargo and Cheliax being the other two maps...

Also a "Devils Revisited" Campaign Setting would offer itself later this year. ;-)

So, my brain keeps inverting the "i" in Barzillai, transforming the name into Barzilla!, complete with exclamation point. Which then makes me wonder what you have to do to earn the name Barzilla! Thrune...

Mahathallah fleshed out? My dread gnome necromancer is going to love the extra info. Hoping for traits/feats/abilities to use in PFS!

I hope you don't mind me pitching an idea... The mechanics of Library of the Lion set in an archive of Cheliax's redacted histories.

Liberty's Edge

Sean is still writing the deity articles, right?

No. She'll have the regular one though.

The Demonic obediences were things I came up with based on elements from Green Ronin's demon book by Erik Mona. They've caught on, but going forward they'll be represented by the three options in Inner Sea Gods, leaving the obediences from Book of the Damned II as interesting developmental artifacts, not as further design space.

The map folio is scheduled, at this time, to have maps of Kintargo, Vyre, and Ravounel (the northwestern Archduchy of Cheliax that includes those two cities). There will NOT be a map of Cheliax in this AP's map folio, although I'd expect one to appear in the next for Hell's Vengeance.

Devils Revisited is very very very very unlikely to happen.

The ONLY reason Demons Revisited happened was because I wanted to write it. Wes is our resident devil, and he's pouring his devil energies into other projects to support the AP. The "Revisited" line was already in semi-retirement when Demons Revisited went on the schedule, and there are no plans to do more books in the line at this point, due to the fact that the revisited books were selling more and more slowly with each one that came out, alas.

She'll be as fleshed out as any other deity article. Which means an obedience page for sure, but not a lot else. They're mostly flavor articles, not rules articles.

Is there any hope of specific half-devil adjustments to the half-fiend template ala Demons Revisited? Even just a blog post or something? Maybe an article in one of the 2 "Hell's ****" APs?

No plans at all; not even a blog post. Devils don't mix with humans as frequently in that way, so there's less of an in-world call for this, but just as you can use the information from the start of Demons Revisited where it talks about how to build half-demons of any of the demons who AREN'T the 10 detailed in that book, you can do the exact same thing for devils or any other fiend. Same goes for Half-celestial in fact.

While I've got you on the line, any hints on draconic bloodlines? The player's guide sort of implies they'll face a blue. I'm guessing one of the others would be a bronze (and probable ally of the Hellknights of the Torrent)? Or would draconic be a bad bloodline choice for reasons that will later become clear?

There's not really one bloodline that's better or worse than the other. There ARE dragons involved in the AP, but they're not a full-on focus of it.

So I take it that wasn't a generic Hellknight of the Torrent on #98, and Jackdaw, Shensen, and Strea will be on the remaining covers?

Correct; we decided that since so much of the AP takes place in Kintargo that it'd be better to offer two different styles of city map for the city... a classic one that looks like the one in the Player's Guide, and a more illustrative one that works better as an in-world map of the city.

That's not a generic Hellknight on the cover of #98; it's Lictor Octavio Sabinus, the leader of the Order of the Torrent.

The character on the cover of #100 will be Shensen. Jackdaw and Strea will not be on any covers; the characters on the last two are still secrets.

Just noticed the background image on the updated cover, and mentally winced at the thought of a harpsichord getting chopped to kindling by an angry devil. No repect for the craftmanship involved in making such expensive musical instruments! :o

I'd tell you, but mine hasn't shipped yet. I would be be really awesome if it did today, since I got both Hell's Bright Shadow and Turn of the Torrent in the mail this week, but I may be waiting until next week. Personally, I'm hoping Todd has more Proteans or Daemons in store for us, but we'll see.
