by Liane Merciel

In the grim nation of Nidal, carefully chosen children are trained to practice dark magic, summoning forth creatures of horror and shadow for the greater glory of the Midnight Lord. Isiem is one such student, a promising young shadowcaller whose budding powers are the envy of his peers. Upon coming of age, he’s dispatched on a diplomatic mission to the mountains of Devil’s Perch, where he’s meant to assist the armies of devil-worshiping Cheliax in clearing out a tribe of monstrous winged humanoids. Yet as the body count rises and Isiem comes face to face with the people he’s exterminating, lines begin to blur, and the shadowcaller must ask himself who the real monsters are...

From Liane Merciel, critically acclaimed author of The River King's Road and Heaven's Needle, comes a fantastical tale of darkness and redemption set in the award-winning world of the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game.

Nidal is TOO depressing

**( )( )( )

Nightglass was my second read in the Pathfinder Tales Series. I would like to start out by saying that the imagery in this novel was some of the best I have ever read. I could really feel the tension that both of the major settings created and it was very easy for me to picture nearly everything described.

Sadly, I feel that the character interactions did not match up. Isiem was one of the least relatable characters I have read about to date. It seemed that every action of his was overly contemplated and that his exchanges with his classmates were uninspired. I know that Nidal is supposed to be dark and depressing and it was represented really well, however it also sucked out any semblance of life the characters may have had. I was even less crazy about the second book, the Strix were well represented but once again, Isiem felt dull through the whole event. This is probably my least favorite Pathfinder novel to date.

One of the best in the series

****( )

I enjoyed this book, in large part because of two very interesting settings, and a memorable main character that underwent an internal journey as much as in external one.

Raised in the horrific dark land of Nidal, Isiem is a gifted spellcaster uncomfortable with the torture his life is built on. But will he be able to extricate himself from it, before it extricates his various organs?

There are two clear parts to this novel, but they never feel disjointed under Merciel's accomplished hand. She covers a lot of chronology in a way that feels efficient and aerodynamic.

The world of Nidal and the wild west Chelaxian outpost Isiems ends up in are both rendered well, but more impressive is how Merciel conveys Isiem's outsider status in both locations without descending to cliche.

He is an easy character to root for and it gives the book an emotional centre which is satisfying. In some ways, I was reminded of Hobb's Forest Mage trilogy with this novel, which shares many of the same ingredients, but thankfully skips the hundreds of pages of filler and teenage angst.

Inventive in the right ways, but also textbook where it counts - novel construction. I was impressed by this book and will definitely read more of Merciel's work.

Superb!

*****

I really enjoyed this book. I picked it up for the Nidalese content, I don't know much about the region and wanted to fill in some blanks. It did not disappoint! I didn't expect, but thoroughly enjoyed, the way spellcasting was dealt with, especially Isiem's own spells. The author paid a lot of attention to the spell components, really brought home the RPG setting without ruining the immersion.

Very well done!

Favorite Pathfinder Tale to Date

*****

This story has been been my favorite Pathfinder Tale to date. I have read four or five others. It is easy to read and the characters are engaging. It flows very naturally and comes across as a very professional job. Well done.
