A dungeon filled with insidious traps, a magnificent imperial throne room, the citadel of an immortal tyrant—the possibilities for adventure are endless with Pathfinder Flip-Mat: Basic.

Appropriate for use with any roleplaying game, this invaluable gaming accessory presents two subtle textures—smooth stone and fine dirt—providing Game Masters a blank canvas on which to create any dungeon, battleground, and adventure set piece they desire.

A special coating on each Flip-Mat allows you to use wet erase, dry erase, AND permanent markers with ease! Removing permanent ink is easy—simply trace over any permanent mark with a dry erase marker, wait 10 seconds, then wipe off both marks with a dry cloth or paper towel.

  • 24" × 30" mat
  • Folds to 8" × 10"
  • 1" squares on each side

Don’t feel like you always have to run your game in someone else’s world. With Pathfinder Flip-Mat: Basic, the setting of your next adventure is wherever you can imagine.

Absolutely Fantastic

5/5

I bought two of these back in 2009. Today they are still holding up in the same condition we had them in back then. They have survived two sessions a week, random friends borrowing them, spills, markers, and children. I highly suggest them.

The place to start

5/5

If you're only buying one flip-mat, buy this. Lots of blank real estate, accepts pretty much any pen, folds down to 8" x 10". What's not to love?

While it's true some of the older products in the line had a blank side, that practice has come to an end, meaning this is your best option if you just want a portable, erasable play space. I'd suggest getting two, as together they will allow you to map pretty much anything.

(*****)

By the way, there is a run of these maps made of lighter-than-intended card stock. I have two that fit this description, and while they've held up OK, they're definitely not going to last as long as my other flip-mats. You can identify the "too thin" ones because the map is folded in a C, rather than a Z.

Edit: Both of these guys have now given up the ghost, with ink soaking through at the corners. The good news is I've since bought two more of these, and they're on a much heavier stock. It seems like the light-than-intended maps are out of the distribution channel.

UM Why?

1/5

Considering how many maps have blank sides or are just blank... why make this?

Slightly too small

3/5

I have to make little alterations to a lot of published dungeon maps to get them to fit on this mat. It always seems like a I need 5-10 more squares in one direction or the other. But this won't be a problem if you're making your own dungeons to fit this size.

Folding up is great for storage but the rigidness of the mat makes it not want to lay flat once it's unfolded which makes it a hassle to keep your figures in the right spot/upright. I usually have to dedicate some time to laying books over it to get it to lay flat for the upcoming session.

Sadly Disapointed

2/5

As a regular Paizo fan of almost every product,I finally decided to pick two of these up at my FLGS when my Chessex mat died. I've used Gamer Paper and even laminated a paper grid map Wizards gave me.

The thickness is good, but my map had bubbles and the creases were so defined, even after reverse bending and laying books on it, they are a permanent fold in the map. The creases also appear to have already broken the fold seal and expect will stain the map underneath.

The desire to compress the package size in my opinion ruins the product.

What makes it worse is I was really looking forward to the printed maps, but the packing, being the same, implies the same issues in those.

Disapointed

Would this arrive at my house before GenCon? I'm slated to run a game at 7:00 AM on Thursday for the Pathfinder Society and a large blank grid look really good to me. Or would it be better off for me to get the flip mat at the Con?

It would probably be best to pick it up at the con.

Will do. Thanks.

will this come in a stiff tube like a poster when shipped, or?

No—it folds down to 8x10, so it ships like a book.

How thick are these? Are they like a cardstock of 110 or thicker like cardboard? I am just wondering how thick they will be to carry them in my binder. Thinking of ordering 4 or 5.

I've added the following to the product description:

Flip-Mats are constructed of durable laminated card stock (~70 lb paper—comparable to that of a restaurant menu). They measure 24" by 30", and quickly and conveniently fold down to 8" by 10" (slightly smaller than a sheet of notebook paper).

We expect them to arrive right at the end of July or very early August. So not much longer to wait!

I am so pumped for this product :) I am counting the days, and usually check every hour to see if it is finally in, even though I know it isn't.

I will dance when I get this.

If these are the same as the blank flip mats I bought from Paizo at Gencon last year, they are fantastic. They clean up nicer than the soft mats, but the best thing is that they fold down to the size of a thin book and can go right in you pack with the rule books and everything. No more long, rolled up mats to deal with.

It's the same material and concept, but with a different look—squares now go all the way to the edges on both sides, and we've used two different background images—one side is more sandy and one is more stony—to increase versatility.

I can't wait to see this flip-mat in my local game store. The size looks very well in a table with all the materials of the players and the game master.

Sweet! Now you can finally connect multiple mats into one giant mat! Like a Voltron mat! (Sorry, I haven't had much sleep lately)

That would be five robot dogs of a different color I think....

I just want to say I love this product! I have never been able to find such a versatile, usable, easy-to-use game aid in my 15 years of DMing. It folds up neatly so that I can fit it in a simple folder, I clip a couple dry-erase markers to it, and I'm ready to go. I was originally worried about the size, but it is more than enough for what I need. You could even buy two mats (they're cheap enough) and use them for large scale tactical battles or Warhammer 40k minis. If you are considering buying this product just buy it. I have no regrets.

I got three of these recently and love them so much that I got another today. I'm going to give some to friends who DM.

I am thinking of cutting one into a 24"x20" piece, an 8"x10" piece and a 16"x10" piece. Since you can pre-draw a layout with Sharpie and it won't rub off while the mat is folded up, this would add utility.

My concern is the lamination. Will doing this cause it to peel? Is there something I can do to prevent such a thing from happening- a hot implement to seal up the edge, maybe? Or should I abandon this plan as insanity?

Just got this item a few days ago. Unfolded and flattened it out per instructions. This has become the best accessory I've bought for my games so far. Works with every marker I've got in the house, easy to clean and small enough for anything.
I like the dual sided 1" squares.

Are there any plans for a flip-mat with a starfield as a background? For SWSE and other sci-fi games.

Yeah, and the flip-side could have a high tech looking floor. All your sci-fi needs handled with one flip-mat.

How does this mat compare with the cloth/vinyl type of mats?
Do any of you have both and which do you prefer?

sacerd wrote:

Flip mat by far. The material of the vinyl is more durable, but the flipmats can take any type of marker (including permanent) in any color and wipe free, even after a week or two of setting in. I've thrown out more than my share of the vinyl mats over the years, and at those prices I always have to budget buying a replacement. The flipmats are very affordable, and I have picked up several for use in different environments.

Ryn, who can never have too many maps

I have to say I own a good selection of the WotC D&D Dungeon Tiles and decided on a whim to pick this up, and haven't used the tiles since. Don't get me wrong I like the tiles, but the ability to draw the exact stuff in the room and size, etc is amazing and these things are awesome. Will probably get more (the cathedral, market and daklands look really good, as does the forest one...)

Liberty's Edge

I'd love to see this item with hex grids on both sides, instead of squares. While I know most people here play games that use the square grid, there are a number of games that use hexes where I find my original flip-mat indispensable (Champions, for example). It'd be nice to have a mat with two sides (therefore two pre-drawn scenes) to work with.

Just adding...
I bought one of these when I kicked off my RotR campaign last month or so. It erases clearly and easily. Definately one of the better mats I have used.

I use Staedtler Non-Permanent Wet erase markers with nothing but a lightly damp paper towel in case anyone was curious.

Has anyone tried cutting one up and seeing if it stands up? I would be worried about the "lamination" being unconnected at those points. I was close to ordering one for surgical purposes, but they have cut off OT at work.

I took one of the original mats and cut it without problems. The sides are not sealed when the mat is whole. I have only every seen one mat that the laminate failed - the customer left it in a hot car and it stuck to a binder.

As a side note, the mat I tested on had Sharpie on it from Gen Con 2006 or 2005, and it came off with a dry erase marker as was advertised.

I've got to second this. I'm about to start up a D&D 4th game, but I play mostly in GURPS, where the hex is the thing, and I'd love, love, LOVE to have these available in that format as well. I'd personally buy at least a couple if they were. I'll be buying one or two of the existing format anyway, for the aforementioned D&D game, but I'm honestly not sure how long that's going to last--it's mostly a test of the system, to see how we like it.

Well, due to a slight mistake I have ordered a third one of these. This weekend, my group should finish D0 or die trying and I should be able to answer this question from a second opinion.

Yeah, this works surprisingly well, I now have 2 full mats and a 24x20 a 16x10 and and 8x10 piece

There is no initial delamination.

Are the original hex/grid flip-mats still out there? I just saw a picture of one on-line and they *look* quite attractive.

Those have been out of print for quite some time but chances are there are some still out there in various game stores or on ebay. If you're really looking for grid/hex you might look into the Chessex Battlemats.

This may be the wrong area, but will there ever be bigger version of the flipmats? A lot of my battles take up a lot of space, and not having to worry about staining would be great if I had something that was of a comparable size to the battlemats, which are bigger than the regular mats, but not as big as the mondomats(?) if I am not mistaken made by Chessex.

I would just go and laminate some squares but I don't have enough artistic ability to draw straight lines, and keep the squares the same size.

Julian,

I am very sorry for your lengthy shipping time! I assure you it's not normal. Usually, we're very good at hitting our estimated shipping times, but in your case, we were selling through the very last copies of this particular print run when you placed your order, and it took us much longer than we anticipated to locate a copy for you. (The product is now out of stock, awaiting arrival of a reprint.)

I've credited your shipping charge back and, in order to encourage you to give us the opportunity to prove that this isn't the usual case, I've put a credit on your account as well.

Thanks,
cos

I hate to beat an old horse here*, but are these things ever going to make it to a bigger size. Even if it means combining smaller ones to make a bigger one that was made to fit together I would buy it. Sometimes the standard sized area is not big enough for a battle. If it is still one of things that is being thought about just tell me to be patient.

* I wander if that is the right term, well if its not I am sleepy and that is my excuse.

We don't have any plans to make them larger at this time. However, when we replaced the original Flip-Mat (the one with squares on one side and hexes on the other) with Flip-Mat: Basic, we eliminated the border and ran the grid all the way to the edge, so you can now line them up side-by-side.

I just ordered one of these. I'm really looking forward to getting it and retiring my old battle mats and wet-erase markers. Dry-erase seems so much cleaner and you don't have to worry about what types of markers are floating around the table.

I've been looking forward to this product for quite a while. Alas the shipping is something of a monstrosity. It's well in excess of thirty days and it's STILL not here (Sweden).

FLIP-MAT SUGGESTION: Plain Grassy Field.

The reverse side of other flip-mats give us useful terrain such as city streets, stone floors, and open ocean.
However, none of the flip-mats thus far have an empty green field.
