Would this arrive at my house before GenCon? I'm slated to run a game at 7:00 AM on Thursday for the Pathfinder Society and a large blank grid look really good to me. Or would it be better off for me to get the flip mat at the Con?

No—it folds down to 8x10, so it ships like a book.

How thick are these? Are they like a cardstock of 110 or thicker like cardboard? I am just wondering how thick they will be to carry them in my binder. Thinking of ordering 4 or 5.

Flip-Mats are constructed of durable laminated card stock (~70 lb paper—comparable to that of a restaurant menu). They measure 24" by 30", and quickly and conveniently fold down to 8" by 10" (slightly smaller than a sheet of notebook paper).

I am so pumped for this product :) I am counting the days, and usually check every hour to see if it is finally in, even though I know it isn't.

If these are the same as the blank flip mats I bought from Paizo at Gencon last year, they are fantastic. They clean up nicer than the soft mats, but the best thing is that they fold down to the size of a thin book and can go right in you pack with the rule books and everything. No more long, rolled up mats to deal with.

It's the same material and concept, but with a different look—squares now go all the way to the edges on both sides, and we've used two different background images—one side is more sandy and one is more stony—to increase versatility.

I can't wait to see this flip-mat in my local game store. The size looks very well in a table with all the materials of the players and the game master.

I just want to say I love this product! I have never been able to find such a versatile, usable, easy-to-use game aid in my 15 years of DMing. It folds up neatly so that I can fit it in a simple folder, I clip a couple dry-erase markers to it, and I'm ready to go. I was originally worried about the size, but it is more than enough for what I need. You could even buy two mats (they're cheap enough) and use them for large scale tactical battles or Warhammer 40k minis. If you are considering buying this product just buy it. I have no regrets.

My concern is the lamination. Will doing this cause it to peel? Is there something I can do to prevent such a thing from happening- a hot implement to seal up the edge, maybe? Or should I abandon this plan as insanity?

Just got this item a few days ago. Unfolded and flattened it out per instructions. This has become the best accessory I've bought for my games so far. Works with every marker I've got in the house, easy to clean and small enough for anything.
I like the dual sided 1" squares.

Flip mat by far. The material of the vinyl is more durable, but the flipmats can take any type of marker (including permanent) in any color and wipe free, even after a week or two of setting in. I've thrown out more than my share of the vinyl mats over the years, and at those prices I always have to budget buying a replacement. The flipmats are very affordable, and I have picked up several for use in different environments.

I have to say I own a good selection of the WotC D&D Dungeon Tiles and decided on a whim to pick this up, and haven't used the tiles since. Don't get me wrong I like the tiles, but the ability to draw the exact stuff in the room and size, etc is amazing and these things are awesome. Will probably get more (the cathedral, market and daklands look really good, as does the forest one...)

I'd love to see this item with hex grids on both sides, instead of squares. While I know most people here play games that use the square grid, there are a number of games that use hexes where I find my original flip-mat indispensable (Champions, for example). It'd be nice to have a mat with two sides (therefore two pre-drawn scenes) to work with.

I bought one of these when I kicked off my RotR campaign last month or so. It erases clearly and easily. Definately one of the better mats I have used.

I use Staedtler Non-Permanent Wet erase markers with nothing but a lightly damp paper towel in case anyone was curious.

I took one of the original mats and cut it without problems. The sides are not sealed when the mat is whole. I have only every seen one mat that the laminate failed - the customer left it in a hot car and it stuck to a binder.

As a side note, the mat I tested on had Sharpie on it from Gen Con 2006 or 2005, and it came off with a dry erase marker as was advertised.

I've got to second this. I'm about to start up a D&D 4th game, but I play mostly in GURPS, where the hex is the thing, and I'd love, love, LOVE to have these available in that format as well. I'd personally buy at least a couple if they were. I'll be buying one or two of the existing format anyway, for the aforementioned D&D game, but I'm honestly not sure how long that's going to last--it's mostly a test of the system, to see how we like it.

I will now be adding a fourth to cut up. The only complaint I had was from the wife of one of the players who said I should have used a box cutter rather than scissors.

Are the original hex/grid flip-mats still out there? I just saw a picture of one on-line and they *look* quite attractive.

Those have been out of print for quite some time but chances are there are some still out there in various game stores or on ebay. If you're really looking for grid/hex you might look into the Chessex Battlemats.

This may be the wrong area, but will there ever be bigger version of the flipmats? A lot of my battles take up a lot of space, and not having to worry about staining would be great if I had something that was of a comparable size to the battlemats, which are bigger than the regular mats, but not as big as the mondomats(?) if I am not mistaken made by Chessex.

I would just go and laminate some squares but I don't have enough artistic ability to draw straight lines, and keep the squares the same size.

We don't have any plans to make them larger at this time. However, when we replaced the original Flip-Mat (the one with squares on one side and hexes on the other) with Flip-Mat: Basic, we eliminated the border and ran the grid all the way to the edge, so you can now line them up side-by-side.

I just ordered one of these. I'm really looking forward to getting it and retiring my old battle mats and wet-erase markers. Dry-erase seems so much cleaner and you don't have to worry about what types of markers are floating around the table.

I've been looking forward to this product for quite a while. Alas the shipping is something of a monstrosity. It's well in excess of thirty days and it's STILL not here (Sweden).

FLIP-MAT SUGGESTION: Plain Grassy Field.

The reverse side of other flip-mats give us useful terrain such as city streets, stone floors, and open ocean.
However, none of the flip-mats thus far have an empty green field.
