History:
Anyone that has lived in the Downholme long enough, about eighty years or more, knew Varis as a carefree, jovial youth. He was the son of a local sheep farming couple, he would spend much of his time tending the sheep, but he was far from diligent. He would often take off to explore the local countryside, or fall asleep under a tree. He was irresponsible. Their farm was along the outskirts of town, on the Elven side, one of the outlier farms. During a particularly cold winter, the wolves had come to range much closer to the town to hunt, and they found Varis' farm. Slowly, here and there, a sheep would go missing and would often be blamed on Varis' inattention, but when they learned they were being taken it became more serious. Varis decided he would show his parents that he could stop the wolves. He would go out at night, search for the animals, take up a hide position, but he was unsuccessful. The pack was cunning, and Varis still couldn't focus on his task. As the flock kept dwindling, desperation grew, and he became obsessed. He would stay out on cold nights, waiting, watching, setting traps, but every time the wolves would get by him. As the flock got too small to maintain the family well, his parents had to leave to live with family, but he refused. Varis was determined, and he would stay until he saw the end of the wolves.

He finally had an idea, he would shear the last sheep of the flock, and drape himself in the wool. He waited and watched, and the wolf finally came to him. As it neared, he drew his bow slowly, watching as its eyes came closer, watching him. As it got close enough to strike, he fired, and got it in the shoulder. It ran and he chased it, he followed and hunted it for two days before he caught up to it, and finished it off. With his flock having been mostly killed off the pack had moved on to other farms, but he wasn't done with them. Over the course of the following couple years he hunted the pack, and then any others within the vicinity.

Nowadays, most people don't even know the carefree, cheerful youth. They only know Varis the Wolfsbane. If you are losing sheep, seek out the elf of few words, and he will sit at the farm until just the right time to strike, taking many of them out with one or two shots, hunting the packs. He is quiet now, always serious, always scowling, but behind the hard mask he wears his eyes take everything in. He is always on the hunt, his eyes ever aware of any threat to the flock.
