Background:
Valachi is a bastard and an orphan, the unfortunate spawn of some Sczarni vagabond and a Varisian whore. He never knew his parents, as the father left the night after his conception, and his mother dumped him at the temple of Pharasma a few days after his birth. As Valachi grew up, his wild nature kept him at odds with the trappings of Ustalav society, and he consistently alienated those who fostered him. Eventually, at an age of ten, he ran off to fend for himself. On the streets of Caliphas, Val begged, hunted rats, associated with gangs, and stole - whatever it took to survive, but always he was a loner. After offending a prominent band of thugs he was chased out of the city, and in the wilds he finally found his niche.

Valachi befriended the son of a free woodsman, and by their charity, took shelter in their barn. It quickly became his home. The close, crowded aspects of city life that he chafed with for years were alleviated in the free ranges of the wilderness, where Val could roam to his content. The freedom also softened his personality, and he matured into a gracious man.

As his adolescence progressed, elements of his ancestry bloomed. He found he could extend sharp claws from his hands at whim, but also forced a feral aspect to his features. Though he never knew, Valachi suspected one of his parents was a werewolf. He learned to use his claws to good effect, but the fear of being found and hunted for being a lycanthrope has haunted him for years. Finally, driven to search out the truth of his roots, Valachi returned to Caliphas and sought the help of Professor Lorrimor.

Appearance:
Valachi's Varisian heritage is prominent in his swarthy features - olive skin, straight black hair, and sharp features. He has a lot of body hair, and shaves occasionally, giving him a rough appearance most days. He keeps his hair long, often loose. His eyes are hazel, but the color fades from brown to green day-to-day. Val is strong, but his build is wirey muscle rather than bulk.

Feats
Aspect of the Beast (Claws of the Beast): Valachi grows a pair of claws. These claws are primary attacks that deal 1d4 points of damage.
Endurance: Valachi gains a +4 bonus on the following checks and saves: Swim checks made to resist nonlethal damage from exhaustion; Constitution checks made to continue running; Constitution checks made to avoid nonlethal damage from a forced march; Constitution checks made to hold your breath; Constitution checks made to avoid nonlethal damage from starvation or thirst; Fortitude saves made to avoid nonlethal damage from hot or cold environments; and Fortitude saves made to resist damage from suffocation. Valachi may sleep in light or medium armor without becoming fatigued.
Improved Grapple: Valachi does not provoke an attack of opportunity when he performs a grapple combat manuever. In addition, he recieves a +2 bonus on checks made to grapple a foe. He also recieves a +2 bonus to his Combat Manuever Defense whenever an opponent tries to grapple him.
Improved Natural Attack: Valachi's claw attacks deal 1d6 slashing damage.
Rending Claws: If Valachi hits a creature with two claw attacks in the same turn, the second claw attack deals an additional 1d6 points of damage. This damage is precision damage and is not multiplied on a critical hit. Valachi can use this feat once per round.

Class Features
Combat Style - Shapeshifter: Valachi gains the aspect of the beast feat.
Favored Enemy - Undead: Valachi gains a +2 bonus on Bluff, Knowledge, Perception, Sense Motive, and Survival checks against undead creatures. Likewise, he gets a +2 bonus on weapon attack and damage rolls against them. He may make Knowledge skill checks untrained when attempting to identify undead creatures.
Shifter's Blessing (Form of the Bear): Valachi can take on the aspects of a wild creature once per day as a swift action. He can remain in this form for a number of rounds equal to his ranger level + his Wisdom modifier. While in one of his shifter's blessing forms, Valachi gains the shapeshifter subtype. Valachi's muscles enlarge and tighten, and his facial features become more ursine. While in this form, Valachi gains a +4 enhancement bonus to Strength, but his base speed becomes 20 feet.
Track: Valachi adds +1 (half his ranger level) to Survival skill checks made to follow or identify tracks.
Wild Empathy: Valachi can improve the initial attitude of an animal. This ability functions like a Diplomacy check, using 1d20+2 (ranger level plus Charisma bonus) to determine the wild empathy check result. To use wild empathy, Val must be within 30 feet of the target under normal visibility conditions. Val can also use this ability to influence a magical beast with an Intelligence score of 1 or 2, but takes a -4 penalty on the check.

Traits
Subject of Study (lycanthropes): Years of study have improved Valachi's combat effectiveness against lycanthropes. He gains a +1 bonus on damage rolls against creatures of this type.
Vagabond Child (sleight of hand): Valachi grew up among the outcasts and outlaws of society, learning to forage and survive in an urban environment. He gains a +1 trait bonus to Sleight of Hand checks, and it is always a class skill for him.
