About The Darkstalker

History

Spoiler:

...From an old notebook, in an abandoned house with an address on a street that's not on any map...

"There is said to exist a legendary thief in the city of Westcrown. Like all legends, this thief does not truly exist, and is used to keep children scared and well-behaved, as well as to entertain common-folk and even frighten a few nobles. That said, the following is a collection of 'facts' gathered about the thief from various versions of his legend.

The thief has no name, nor has he a face. He is referred to by those who claim to have known him as 'The Darkstalker'. The man is short, and his face is always shrouded in a dark hood. Some say that the thief was originally a slave in a certain noble house. A slave who killed his master, robbed the entire place blind, and escaped with his life under the cover of darkness. Of course, there are many problems with that little part of the legend. For one thing, that would make The Darkstalker a halfling, which is preposterous. Secondly, it would require that the listener believe that an escaped halfling slave would actually remain in Westcrown, which is also ridiculous. And third, and most important, who the hell could escape a mansion under the cover of darkness in Westcrown? No one goes out at night in Westcrown. Those foolish enough to do so are killed by the shadow beasts, and never heard from again. So the idea that The Darkstalker is an escaped slave should be stricken from the listener's knowledge. The point of bringing it up was simply to refute it so the listener would never allow himself to believe such nonsense when he heard it on the streets.

A single man claims to have seen The Darkstalker's face unmasked. This man is a devil-blooded bastard of a noble house who claims to have been robbed by the thief himself, and escaped with his life because, according to the victim, "The Darkstalker said that letting me stay alive in this city of bigots would be far worse of a punishment than letting me into Hell where I would finally find acceptance.[/b]" The tiefling victim claims that The Darkstalker's face resembles a middle-aged Dwarven male with a long brown beard and amber eyes. The Darkstalker is reported to have been short, and to move more slowly than a human, so the idea that he is a dwarven merchant is entirely plausible. Certainly more believable than that ridiculous escaped slave story previously mentioned.

The Darkstalker's motives are unclear. It seems almost like he steals and kills simply because he has nothing better to do. The Council of Thieves has denied their involvement with this legendary man, whom they stubbornly insist to be a real person. So who is this thief, and what are his goals? I shall continue to research this..."

...From the desk of Wiscrani Reporter Malvus Refraine, later found dead after choking on a silver coin he seemed to have accidentally swallowed.
