About Sir Adolphus Ministhrien

Shackled City Treasure Tracker

Description Adolphus has dark brown hair with light brown or blond streaks. It is often unruly, but Adolphus has always been the type to set a trend rather than try to fit one. His blue eyes sparkle with mischief and his beard is neatly trimmed in the style of one raised to expect the very best from society. He wears a royal blue noble's outfit with half cape, and a silver chain of chivalry.

Background From a very young age, Adolphus has been trained as a fighter with the heavy weapons his father expected him to learn. Years of such drills have added considerable power to his physique. His mother's training took him for another turn, however, and he soon found himself a noble attache' to the Vanderboren estate, where he learned the fine arts of diplomacy and how to carry himself as a gentleman. After his knighting ceremony, Adolphus' parents suddenly died on their journey home, leaving Adolphus under the care and tutelage of the Vanderboren estate until he was legally of age. Although this has occurred recently, and Sir Adolphus is a free man, he still has a somewhat close alliance with the Vanderboren household. In the time since these tragic events, Adolphus has redoubled his efforts to understand the nature of the nobility and the noble houses of Cauldron, and to establish the best possible marriage he can from the political situation at hand (Lady Rhiavadi). He means to ensure his family's progeny.

Personality Sir Adolphus upholds his personal beliefs with a steel but noble fist. Sometimes saddened by the loss of his family, and at other times gladdened by the freedom it affords him, he sometimes seems a conglomeration of opposites. Although he balks a little at the imperial commands the Vanderborens hand down to him, he realizes both that by doing the work demanded of him he is acquiring knowledge that will serve him well once he inherits his own estate, and that the Vanderborens still control the financial inheritance from his parents.

(With DM's Approval: At a later time, Sir Adolphus will take the Additional Traits feat to acquire Wealthy Parents and Child of the Temple. These represent the remnants of his family's finances and his mother's personal library, which are currently being held by the Vanderborens)

Sir Adolphus currently spends most of his days serving as a diplomatic attache' to the Vanderborens, or whatever other nobles they are currently in alliance with. He is avid and curious, even if he is not the smartest or wisest man in the room, and applies himself diligently to understanding of how the nobility works, gathering and employing rumors and information from odd sources, and the like. He occasionally trains his sword arms at a suitable location to blow off steam when agitated with his situation.

Sir Adolphus has recently set aside the wages for his valet and the care of his squire, and discovered that he has no funds remaining. He has inquired in the Vanderborens have any work for one with his skills, or know of any other nobles that might, but has also of late frequented some of the taverns in the noble district to look for work.

While the Vanderborens have mostly welcomed Adolphus as a friend and relative, one of them has been a thorn in his side since the day he arrived. Todd Vanderboren is a ward, much like Sir Adolphus, except that he was officially adopted by the Vanderborens after his parents died. A genuinely unpleasant fellow, he has the habit of insulting just about anybody he comes across, but he saves the most vitriol for the young knight.

FEATS AND SPECIAL ABILITIES
Antagonize (Feat) Adolphus can make Diplomacy and Intimidate checks to make creatures respond to him with hostility. No matter which skill he uses, antagonizing a creature takes a standard action that does not provoke attacks of opportunity, and has a DC equal to 10 + the target's Hit Dice + the target's Wisdom modifier. He cannot make this check against a creature that does not understand him or has an Intelligence score of 3 or lower. Before he makes these checks, he may make a Sense Motive check (DC 20) as a swift action to gain an insight bonus on these Diplomacy or Intimidate checks equal to his Charisma bonus until the end of your next turn. The benefits he gains for this check depend on the skill he uses. This is a mind-affecting effect. Once he has targeted a creature with this ability, he cannot target it again for 1 day.

Diplomacy: Adolphus flusters the enemy. For a number of rounds equal to his Charisma modifier (minimum 1), the target takes a –2 penalty on all attacks rolls made against creatures other than Adolphus and has a 10% spell failure chance on all spells that do not target him or that has him within their area of effect.

Intimidate: The creature flies into a rage. On its next turn, the target must attempt to harm Adolphus in some way. The effect ends if the creature is prevented from reaching him or attempting to do so would harm it (for example, if he is on the other side of a chasm or a wall of fire), or as soon as the creature attempts to harm him.
Bravery (Ex) Adolphus has a +1 save vs. fear.
Cleave (Feat) As a standard action, Adolphus can stack a second attack onto an existing attack if it is successful, but this attack effects a second adjacent enemy. -2 AC for one turn after using.
Heart of the Streets (Ex) Adolphus has +1 Reflex saves and +1 dodge AC when adjacent to two other allies. He does not count crowds as difficult terrain.
Power Attack (Feat) Adolphus can choose to take -1 on an attack roll and inflict an additional +2 damage if it hits (or +3 with two handed weapon)
Shield of Swings (Feat) When making a full-attack while wielding his greatsword, Adolphus can half the damage dealt and gain a +4 shield bonus to AC until the beginning of his next turn.

Hirelings and Mostly Meaningless Companions

His valet, the halfling Rindishan (Rindy) Temult, is a competent servant.

His squire, the young master Terifan Lethenmire is a member of the Lethenmire family eager to earn his spurs. Terifan assists Sir Adolphus with training and cares for his armor and weapons, but the two do not have a close relationship. Adolphus seems content to let Terifan run free as young people are wont to do when he's not servicing Adolphus' armor or weapons.
