Appearance

Nathaniel is tall, dark, and just a bit too scruffy, his eyes a little too sunken, his nose a bit too hawk-like to quite be handsome.

Fairly tall and broad shouldered, his physique is a product of years of logging work and (more recently) combat training, but he is also surprisingly quick and nimble.

He has dark hair and eyes and naturally fair skin tanned and weathered by years of working outdoors. His hair is long, though he ties it back in a tail or braids when working. His beard tends to get a bit scraggly and unruly.

He tends to dress in plain, functional clothing, the only real concession to personal adornment being a silver locket that he wears bearing a portrait of his beloved younger sister and parents. His weapons are utilitarian but kept in good condition, and he recently came by a well made and strong chain-link shirt, spoils gained on the defeat of a group of bandits assailing the village.

Personality and Background

Nathaniel tends to be laconic, saying little unless he feels it really necessary ... but on subjects important to him, or when passionate about something for good or ill, he can get very verbose.

Although generally friendly and helpful (if sometimes quiet), people sometimes find his manner a bit off-putting, as he can get quite intense and worked up about things, brooding or breaking out into rants. However, once he comes to the realisation he needs to act on something (rather than brood or think about it, or talk it through) he does so decisively and with little hesitation. This is more likely in situations where some physical action (be it fighting or helping a friend sow a field) can solve the problem than in areas of discussion or diplomacy.

He is very close to his family, being quite jovial and caring around them, an attitude that carries to a very few close friends whom he almost considers family. With less close friends and casual aquantancies he is quieter and more distant.

Although not quick to violence or anger, Nathaniel does sometimes get frustrated with people who are deliberately obtuse or cruel, and he’s not above resolving a situation with his fists (or weapons if the situation truly warrants it). Of late he’s channelled that attitude to good use, joining the village militia, honing his combat skills and acting as more of a guard and scout for logging parties in the forest (which is home to several bands of brigands) than doing actual logging work. His years of logging have served him well though, and he is a deft hand with an axe.

Nathaniel has killed men twice before. The first time was in desperate self defence against a thuggish bandit attacking a logging party. He felt sick afterwards, but soon came to accept that he had done what he needed to to survive. The second time was while defending the village against a concentrated assault by brigands. Seeing one of the attackers dragging a screaming girl about his sister’s age off into the bushes while fumbling at his belt, a cold fury had overtaken him. He had vaulted the barricade he and several other militia members were sheltering behind, shoving an oncoming bandit away with his shield, and buried his axe into the would-be rapist’s face just as he turned to see what the commotion was. He occasionally has nightmares about the look on the man’s face just before it was split apart ... but worse are the nightmares where he does not act and the girl is ravished and killed.

He never married – a long time love for the lovely Sesheya as a youth amounted to little as the girl married another. Since then he has claimed to be too busy for much romance, and it is true to an extent, but the truth is he is a romantic at heart, and secretly hopes for that ‘thunderbolt’ moment of seeing someone for the first time and just knowing... of course he is also not very romantic in action or presentation, which does not help. He does have a secret crush on his friend Angalia, but apart from the obvious reasons why he doesn’t pursue it, he also thinks she is far too pretty and smart to be interested in him.

Nathaniel is slowly developing a friendship of sorts with a strange little man who lives in the woods, called Erfan. He doesn’t know quite what to make of the magical fey-like creature, but the two have helped each other in the past (a fight with bandits here, darkmantles there) and have had several long discussions about the natural world and the natural order.

He is a fairly devout follower of Erastil, but does not know much about the mystical side of religion. It would never occur to him to pray for a personal miracle for example. He likes to solve his problems in ways that he can understand.

What does character look like?

This man has not taken care with his appearance for some months. His hair is lank, his chin unshaven, his fingernails chipped and dirty. There are dark circles under his hastily shifting eyes. His stained clothes are poorly patched – only his weapons seem well maintained.

Where is the character's family?

[spoiler]His wife is dead … at least, there was a body found, unrecognisable, but it could only have been her. His four year old daughter lives now with his wife’s parents, on their farm in Mordent

What is his greatest love?

He does not know anymore. Once he would have said his wife, and then later, wife or daughter … but he grew apart, the child changed too much. There was another love, a woman in the village … whether it was truly love he does not know, but she re-awoke the feelings in him that he once felt for his wife. Now, his wife is dead, he cannot look at his daughter without feeling shame, and he has not been back to the village woman.

What is his greatest regret?

That he lay in the embrace of another woman the night his wife was taken. That he was not there.

What makes his skin crawl?

The image of that shredded and mutilated corpse found in the woods not far from his cabin, his dead wife. The nightmares he has of the corpse stirring, moving…

What is his greatest shame?

His secret affair.

What fascinates your character?

Spiders. Beautiful and deadly. Patient hunters and trap-makers.

What are his habits?

Train. Hunt. Look for some clue to his wife’s murderer.

What are his secrets?

His affair. That he cannot bear to look at his daughter
