Background:
Named Keisoke Saburo ("Blessed Third") because he was born after two daughters and survived the death of his mother (as he was born). Kei grew up traveling with his father for his father's diplomatic missions. This ended however shortly after he turned ten when the caravan they were traveling with fell under assault and its people massacred. Kei survived because he appeared more severely wounded than he was and he was burned in the ruins of a wagon so was hard to find. Pulling himself out and beginning to bury his father, he passed out from the exertion and his wounds.

When he awoke, it was in the midst of a group of Samurai who had been chasing the marauders. The leader took Kei in and over time began to teach him the ways of the Samurai. For nearly 9 years, Kei trained without the men and learned his lessons well, learning the skills of a Samurai, but just waiting to be named one in fact. As he approached his nineteenth birthday, he discovered a journal in the possession of his Sensei with his father's name on it. As he went to ask the Sensei about it, he overheard discussions about raids and survivors. Taking a closer look, he was shocked to see his Sensei in conversation with the leader of the marauders who had killed his family.

Putting that together with several other strange incidents over the last few years, Kei came to the conclusion that his new Sensei and the Samurai who rode with him were nothing more than well-off bandits. Gathering his belongings, he fled the temple and didn't look back (after also taking his father's journal as a memento). For the next few weeks, he began going by the name of Masao Takeru (or "Righteous Warrior"). In his journeys, he heard much of Sandpoint and the upcoming Swallowtail Festival. With nearly his last coin, he purchased passage to the town with the hopes that he could find reason why every thing he had known had been turned on it's head and why he felt like the gods themselves were frowning on him.
