Soul Mate Necklaces:

These beautiful necklaces are always created in matching pairs. They only function when used in conjunction with its attuned mate. When worn, the necklaces have two functions. The first is to relay information about the status of the other necklace wearer by means of changing color and temperature. This effect is as deathwatch, but at any range as long as both necklaces are on the same plane. The other function is to allow the wearers to communicate once a day as per the spell sending. Only one message can be sent from each neckalce per day. Prior to either function working, both necklaces must be worn for 24 hours consecutavely. If one of the necklaces is removed after this period of time, the other necklace turns ice cold and becomes dull and pale in color, requiring another 24 hours of wearing to reactivate the functionality. Both neclaces must be functioning to use the sending ability.

Background:
Malthir Al’ Dagon
Our swords met as I tried to press my advantage. My brother had let his defenses down and had paid the price. A large knot was already forming where my wooden practice blade had met his exposed thigh. Somewhere in the back of my mind I knew Aroden was letting me stay in the contest but even the best of swordsmen can let their guard down. What Aroden had over me in skill, I knew I could match with my determination, or at least I believed. It was the happiest time of our lives. I was 15, Aroden was 17 and the world was laid before two young nobles.
I had always wanted to be that great warrior, the hero of old slaying dragons and rescuing the princess’s. Life isn’t always that simple, I was not the oldest. My brother, Aroden, was to be the hero. Although my father had failed to become an Aldori Swordlord he was determined to see that Aroden would succeed where he had failed. As my father entered the courtyard, Aroden took advantage of my slight distraction and quickly brought his blade down on my hand and removing the sword from my grip. “You should know better than to let your surroundings get the better of you Malthir!” He beamed with confidence and happiness. “Today we have received great news! Aroden has been accepted into Garaleus’ academy! Our house and line of the Dagon family can finally be secure. Jealousy swelled up inside of me as I looked at my smiling brother. I was not mad at his good fortune, just jealous that it was not me. He turned to me, “Malthir, I have a great burden to place on you. You are to be the one to help our family in a great way.” I imagined helping Aroden or being placed into military service, but when my father told me of my fate I was disappointed. “You are to join the church. The priests of Iomedae have agreed to help us get Aroden into the academy in return for your dedication to the church.” Aroden later pleaded with me not to be mad at him, he had no idea what father was doing and had even gone to him and asked him to stop this, but the decision was already made.
A month later, the day after my 16th birthday I left for Brevoy. When I arrived at Brevoy a week later I was surprised by the building I was led too. This was not a typical Chapel, this was a fortified manor. I was led to a fortified side entrance. When I walked through the small gate I came into a practice yard and stables. Several men stood around and watched as another group of younger men practiced with blades and maces.
A stern looking middle aged man approached, clad in priests’ robes but with a longsword at this belt. “Well, you must be Malthir, I have been looking forward to meeting you, my name is Faramain. I am the high priest of Iomedae. Are you surprised by what you see?” When I explained to him that I had expected to come to a cloistered chapel to be henned over by a group of old priests he laughed and said that many expect that when they come here. We walked to the dorm area as he described that most of the people here were either warrior priests or Paladins, a type of holy warrior.
Over the next two years, Faramain and several other priests introduced me to Iomedae. My eyes opened up to an entirely new world, something beyond the sword. I began to master a belief in a higher power, one that would bring me an inner strength. After my 17th birthday, my studies started to include weapons and armor training again. Faramain had decided that I was to be a Paladin, a holy warrior to represent the church. For the next two years I learned much about the sword, not just how to use, but more importantly, why! They also believed it was important for a number of the warriors to learn weapon and armorsmithing. I choose the path of defense that day. After 2 years the culmination of my training was the crafting of my own suit of breastplate armor and shield, dedicated to Iomedae. I spent several weeks with the armor masters, working with them to craft a beautiful suit with Iomedae’s sword emblazoned on the front of the plate and shield.
4 years after leaving my home my boots echo’d through the halls of house Dagon again. The house seemed much emptier since my childhood. Gone were all of the teachers, retainers and hangers on that followed noble children. Now just the quite halls of a minor noble house in decay, I thought to myself.
Malthir was curious to this summons. It had been 4 years since I had seen my father. 4 years since my father had packed me off at the age of 16 to the seminary of Iomedae in Brevoy. Aroden and I were close, we had trained together from the age of 8 until I was committed to the seminary. He begged me to forgive him when he was sent to the academy and I was not. He was my brother so although I felt sorrow for myself, I was happy that he would flourish.
I walked into my father’s study and looked at him. He had aged ten years in the almost 4 that I had not seen him. I didn’t blame him for not coming to see me, he was spending a lot of time at New Stetven, working on behalf of our family. He was also drunk. I could barely believe the state of him. This was not the father I had left over three years ago.
“Father, you have summoned me?” He finally noticed that I had entered the room and looked at me curiously. He didn’t recognize me at first. Not many did. Gone was the skinny lad who left for the temple, now replaced by a warrior priest, clad in breastplate and longsword. I didn’t need my father’s dreams anymore, Iomedae had filled the void of my childhood dreams.
“Malthir, is that really you? I hardly recognize the man you have become. Too long did I ignore you, too many wrongs for one lifetime.”
I stood there while he seemed to be struggling through his thoughts. In the past I had always waited for my fathers leave to sit or go and realized how easy it was to fall into my old patterns.
“May I sit father, and you can tell me why you have brought me here?”
“Yes, yes of course sit…let’s get to it then. We are ruined. When I was in Stetven last week I received some grave news. Your brother has been killed. It appears that someone challenged his honor in a duel and he was killed. There it is, that is the end of it. What is left of our families’ money went into Aroden’s apprenticeship and there is nothing left. Not only have I lost my son but our house is finished. I am to sell our manor and lands to pay off our debts and try to make something of what is left.” I sat there in shock while I absorbed the news of my brother’s death. I said a silent prayer to Iomedae and steadied myself. I had never seen my father this vulnerable and I could tell he was on the edge of collapse. “Father, what the gods have deemed necessary we must bear. I am saddened by what had happened to my brother and our family but how can I help?”
“You sound like a priest son, albeit you don’t really look like one. Almost 4 years ago I laid a heavy burden upon you, one I regret but felt I had to place upon you. Now I must ask you to try and bear another. The Swordlords were also saddened by the loss of Aroden, he was a promising student. They have decided to grant a charter to our family, a right of exploration and travel in an area of the stolen lands to our south.” He pushed the writ across the table to me. “You must accept this task, the Swordlords have heard of you and said that they plan to send you south with a group of other adventurers to secure this area from the monsters and bandits that now flourish in the Stolen lands. It is the only way to continue our family name.”
I thought about the writ and at that moment I didn’t really care very much about our family name. I did love my mother and father though, and I wouldn’t let my brother’s name be forgotten. It wouldn’t be hard for me to convince Faramain to let me go, the thought of taming a wild land in Iomedae’s name as well as the formation of a possible stronghold in his name would be enough for him to release me from my training, although he probably wouldn’t agree that I was ready. I wasn’t sure that I was ready myself, I was only a “Seventh Sword Knight”, the 2nd lowest rank behind a youth who was just starting, but Faramain had said since my second year of training that few had caught on so quickly and been so blessed by Iomadae so I knew that this was a sign that it was time to act.
“I will do this father, don’t think it is just for our family’s name, but it is for our families honor as well as Iomedae’s.”
My father then laid a beautiful longsword and scabbard on the table. “This was your brother’s, I want you to have it. May it help you in your quest.”
Motives:
As a priest of Iomedae, Malthir takes his appearance very seriously, so he looks clean all of the time as well as keeping his armor polished and tabard neat.
Malthir believes in tough justice. As an agent of Iomedae, he feels it is within this right to dispense this justice. Bandits and thieves are to be shown no mercy as they should set an example for others that might follow this path. Evil is to be rooted out and destroyed. He believes in helping the common folk and spreading the word of justice through Iomedae. This writ is Iomedae’s way of testing Malthir and he now believes it is his sacred duty to bring her law to that lawless land.
