Background

Finn was born in the horrid Demon Wastes in a nameless hamlet -- just a collection of squalid huts -- in a remote region largely avoided by the Carrion Tribes. Finn's parents and the other residents were no mere barbarians, however; they claimed to be a fragment of House Lyrandar who were exiled centuries ago for their quaint religious practices. The truth of this story is borne out by the rare dragonmark (aberrant, more often than not), although the bloodline has been tainted by less savoury influences in the intervening years.

Finn has always felt revulsion for the village and its practices and was endlessly abused and mocked for his "prudishness" and personal code of honour. But there was a spark of respect from the others as well; Finn's innate talent at magic was apparent from even a young age, and this was considered a mark of favour. But as he approached manhood, his position became more and more precarious as an outsider in the community. Finally, a night came when the village headman and his two most ruthless henchmen approached with drawn knives while they thought he slept. His keen ears gave him the minute's head start he needed, and he lit out that very night with only the clothes on his back.

Skulking from place to place, hiding like a rat, he evaded the villagers, the Carrion Tribes, and the Ghaash'kala clansmen who hunted him until he crossed the Icehorn mountains. From there he made his way to a shifter village where an elderly monk named Osric took him in. It was the old razorclaw who taught him to meditate to quiet the dark urges in his mind and trained him in hand-to-hand fighting. Osric is a master of the Delirious Tiger style of fighting which involves wild, unpredictable motions, eye-gouges, biting and scratching, knees to the groin and similar techniques.

Finn still felt too close to his awful past, so once he felt sufficiently recovered he left to find his fortune far from the Wastes. Slowly he made his way from the Eldeen Reaches all the way clear across the continent to Q'barra and beyond to Sasserine, earning money as a mercenary and adventurer in postwar Khorvaire, trying to conceal the vile secret of the tainted blood that flows through his veins.

While in Sasserine, Finn joined the band of adventurers known as the Millenium Falcons, under the employ of Lavinia Vanderboren. After protecting Lady Vanderboren from the machinations of her despicable brother Vanthus, the Falcons accompanied her on a sailing voyage to the legendary Isle of Dread to provide relief for the colony of Farshore (originally established by her parents). While en route, Finn was struck with a mysterious sickness which turned out to be latent demonic traits coming to the fore. The journey was also plagued by vampires, shapeshifting assassins and seaweed monsters. They also made a brief stop on the island of Tamoachan, where they were attacked by basilisks and met the island's "honoured elder" -- a living dead elven priest from ancient times. The only bright side of the trip was provided by Amella, the first mate of the Sea Wyvern; she was able to look past his monstrous exterior and see the heart of the man inside.

Finn's journey across the sea ended when the Sea Wyvern crashed on the shores of the Isle of Dread. The Millenium Falcons and the surviving crew began fighting their way across the dangerous interior of the island, past dinosaurs, gargoyles, and demonic apes in a mysterious fog-shrouded temple. After weeks of perilous trekking, they finally made their way to the native village of Tanaroa (who revere similar "honoured elders" to the one they met in Tamoachan) and from there to Farshore.

When they arrived, Farshore was under attack by two shiploads of ocean raiders, but the reavers were easily defeated.
