Background:
Alexei has known nothing but battle since he was fifteen. He was struck with a revelation of the beauty and power of life, and the need to protect it. With this revelation came great power and knowledge, but any time the poor boy got flustered, confused or excited, his words could only be understood by learned priests and clerics. Though the bell-like, airy words that came from his mouth could easily be described as beautiful, the inability to express himself when not calm felt like a horrible curse to the young boy. He was bullied incessantly because of it, and only found refuge in helping the poor and wounded at his local chapel.

In order to take advantage of his abilities and his unfortunate affliction, Alexei started working as a traveling battlefield healer and adventurer-for-hire, plying his powers in Sarenrae's name.

Meeting the Professor:
Alexei was in his late teenage years when he first met Professor Lorrimor. After having been conscripted to assist some adventurers in clearing out a crypt that had been commandeered by a cult of necromancers, Alexei had ended up dragging his companions from the place after being attacked by a flesh golem, the whole time screaming at them in words they could not understand. The event left Alexei terrified, but never surer of his path. He would use his gifts to lay the undead to rest, and hopefully assist those who had been attacked by them. Assuredly, this was guidance from Sarenrae herself, a second gift from the goddess.

Hearing of these events, in addition to Alexei's exploits, the Professor had come to meet the oracle and discuss his experiences. Giving deeper insight into such unliving monsters, Lorrimor's teachings immediately struck home with the young man. With the blessing of Life essentially flowing from his veins, such monsters were anathema to Alexei. The two men spent many days discussing the habits, anatomy and defenses of the various undead. When the elder man had to leave to continue his travels, the younger man assured him that his teachings would be put to good use.

Now, many years later, Alexei is quite distraught to hear that his one-time mentor has passed, and immediately set out to attend the man's funeral. Saddened that he could not regale the older man with his experiences again, the now slightly less young Alexei enters the town of Ravengro...

Physical Description:
Muscled and gruff-looking from years of death and warfare, Alexei looks every bit at home on a battlefield. His hair and beard are black and trimmed neatly, and his eyes are brown. On the bottom of his right forearm is a mottled birthmark that resembles the symbol of Sarenrae.

Personality:
Alexei's looks and personality are quite at odds. Though he looks rough and unfriendly, he is very much a kind and generous person. Years of war have taken their toll on him, but he works to save as many as possible.

His intentions can backfire, however, as he is very headstrong, sometimes getting himself into trouble that he is physically incapable of talking himself out of.

The tattoo functions in one of three ways:

The first is if a person bearing the tattoo is near death, the power stored in the tattoo causes them to recover, effectively stabilizing them before they die. A character who loses enough hit points to drop below their Constitution score is immediately stabilized and restored to -1 hit point.

The second way it functions is the character can choose to expend the power stored in the tattoo for an additional +20 on any d20 roll. This is an additional sacred bonus and does not replace the actual die roll.

The third way it functions, is the bearer can choose to use the stabilization power on another person by touching them. The target must be unconscious and dying, but does not need to be at their negative Constitution score.

Additionally, the tattoo's powers can be used once per month. If not used, however, that opportunity is lost - the powers reset at the end of each month.

This version of the tattoo never fades, and is unable to be removed except by a miracle, wish, or similar spell.
