Sneak a Peek at the Occult

Thursday, May 14, 2015

While Occult Adventures is not due to hit stores and mailboxes until the end of July, other mysterious forces have found a way to glean advanced knowledge about what the tome contains. Perhaps it was spied through the dimension of dreams or ripped from the minds of one of the developers through psychic combat, but whatever the means one thing is certain. These secrets are out there and ready for you to investigate!

To gain visions of the fantastic art that lies within the tome as well as read the auras of those responsible, head over to io9.com. Whoever is behind this theft must possess incredible power to have garnered so many works of beauty.

If, instead you see to learn more about the nefarious masters behind this mental-burglary, you should investigate the lore found at EN World. Here you can learn about the abilities of the Cult Master, a nefarious new archetype!

That is all there is to share for now. There will, undoubtedly, be additional clues and revelations in the coming weeks. Until then, keep your mind safe!

Thats some really pretty art work. I really loved what looked like a flying ship, since its a flying ship.

Ooo, I wonder how much influence Brandon Hodge and/or Richard Pett had on this tome of Things Adventurers Are Not Meant to Know? <grin>

Looks like the hype train is starting up. Really love the design on the Psychic (I assume that's the Psychic on the cover art with the Occultist?). No sign of the Kineticist though, really interested to see her art.

Well, that's our first good look at the spiritualist, and she is indeed an elderly woman. Cool. :)

The auras thing and several other ideas mentioned are also very nice and I quite approve of.

The Mesmerist Archetypes page is interesting and implies additional changes to the Class in a direction I quite approve of.

While I'm excited about the preview, I have to chime in and say lame blog post. Don't make us click over to other sites for previews please.

I respectfully disagree. Specifically, Psychic Combat!? Tell me more. Use whatever venues are necessary but tell me more! Do whatever it takes to tell me more.

I'm very interested in the psychic combat as well.

Ps-psychic combuhhh...psychic combat.....

Psychic combat!?

I'm throwing my money at the screen but nothing's happening!

The fact that the page about Auras mentions Skill Unlock makes me hopeful that we will have stamina tricks for the new combat feats and VMC for the new classes

I actually think that is the Kineticist on the cover, I mean, she has telekinesis...

Leadership as a bonus feat, lol.

Unplayable archetypes, ho!

She's unarmored and using a spellbook while she casts, definitely not the kineticist.

She is the psychic, as confirmed in this blog. (Although psychics are spontaneous casters, so the spellbook is just a prop.

I'm with Joel.

Though I do find this approach very interesting. What is the marketing strategy here? To show PF fans that PF is marketed elsewhere? Or is there some other cross-fertilization to come we are only just beginning to see….?

Not sure she is using the book - it appears the adventuring pair/looters are in some kind of scriptorium/library - I think she was merely perusing said tome when the rightful custodians/bad guys'n galthing turned up/popped out...

Well that just makes all her constant telekinesis stuff abit weird... Unless they make one of the psychic's disciplines have telekinesis, but that'd be too overlaping with the kineticist...

It's not really "constant telekinesis"... she's got a mind laser and she's flying. Both of these are things you can do by casting a spell as a Psychic.

In every image of her we've been shown she has been telekinesis'ing something.

Shrug, telekinesis is a fairly iconic ability for a Psychic. I'm fairly certain the iconic Kineticist was going to be elemental anyways.

So, Auras work on the Green Lantern colors=emotions idea?

I can dig it.

Auras work on the Jainism and Hinduism linking of Auras with Colours. Green Lantern came out... a fair bit after those :p

Well considering Green Lantern is a rip off of lensmen, I think they may need better lawyers :P

I would love to join the hype train but I just realized that trains are one of the few things that do not exist on Golarion.

Psh, yeah right.

Next you're gonna tell me that elves and dwarves pre-date Tolkien!

Huh, really? I would think there'd be trains in the Mana Wastes, seems like the perfect place to have them.

Speaking of which, Mana Wastes AP with "Martials Unleashed" hardcover when

Nope, we can have lasers, robots, bombs, plasma canons, space ships etc. but for some reason they don't like trains.

Argh... I can't see the artwork on i09 :(

This all sounds and looks very good. But for me it will remain a standalone that I do not want to mix with how I see golarion.
Occult adventures has much more of a gas lamp fantasy feel.

Scarab Sages

Golarion is the kitchen sink of fantasy worlds. A little more psychics wont change the dishwater that much. Especially if you mostly keep it over in Vudra, as gunpowder is mostly kept in the mana wastes, and sci-fi is kept in Numeria.

No scifi in my fantasy.
I'd allow early firearms/gunpowder but my fellow GMs say no.

And they are free to do so in their games. That doesn't mean that there are not guns, robots, and lasers in Golarion.

They are also in a library, so she could be going through the books. could be either one.

There will likely be a green lantern inspired archetype in a couple of months.

There is a captain america archetype for brawler already.

Psh, yeah right.

Next you're gonna tell me that elves and dwarves pre-date Tolkien!

Actually Tolkien invented elves and dwarves.

But they were predated by elfs and dwarfs.

Fun Fact:
Tolkien believed that by changing the way the words "elf" and "dwarf" were pluralized that it would be obvious to his readers that these were non-standard, wholly invented races. Instead, everyone has moved to thinking that his versions -- and the plural forms of those words -- *are* the standard.

Clearly, Paizo is mocking fans of the monk and swashbuckler by having a piece of art where the swashbuckler failed her Will save against being dominated, and is now attacking the monk.

It is certainly not just a piece of work, but has insidious undertones born of Paizo's hatred for martials.

Clearly.

Why is it that the psychic is a badass in every piece of artwork that's been released? We've seen her blasting a naga on the revealed cover, having a mind duel with a duergar, and leading people on a cosmic voyage with her dream ship.

If It was truly a depiction of the hatred for martials, The "unchained" monk would have failed the will save too.

By the time the book is released, I'm fairly certain we'll see all of the Occult Adventures classes being a badass in one form or another. :)

Yeah, but think of the deliciously nasty, NPC, that archetype has written all over it!

Not every GM disallows Leadership. Most GMs I've played with allow it just fine. Paizo needs to write for all variety of games, so having leadership as a bonus feat or just getting a group of people is fine if it fits the theme.

And, well, being a cult master is awesome. But being a cult master without a cult isn't, so.... cult get!

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I, for one, have never had a problem with leadership. I've played a few games and GM'd a few others with leadership and I never encountered any problems. I think that's kind of a crux of many issues. Not everyone has the same problems.

Listen, and I shall reveal the words of the great Dinosaur of the western coast!

Are you sure Seelah and Kyra will be okay with us setting up a new cult, Merisiel? Even Amiri seemed a bit dubious...

Personally, I love the Leadership Feat.

I used it when using the kingdom building rules, in Ultimate Campaign. My cohort, sometimes stepped up as leader and defender, when my character was off adventuring.

Trying to build a railroad through mutant country has yet to pan out.

The psychic looks great. Hopefully most future artists will actually get her ethnicity right (unlike poor Feiya) =P

The "unplayable archetype" mention, I believe references PFS. I don't play PFS, so I'm not sure but I think that leadership is not allowed

It isn't, but PFS has been known to make house rules to fix things like this before (for example, the wizard gets Spell Focus instead of Scribe Scroll). Swapping Leadership with Skill Focus (Bluff) would be functional and flavorful.
