New Scenarios on the Horizon

Monday, March 9, 2015

This year both PaizoCon and Gen Con happen earlier in the year, and that means planning those conventions' adventures takes place even earlier on my end. As Mike and I have noted in several blog posts in early 2015, there are many Special events in addition to the full cast of scenarios. Now that we've finalized our plans for the Pathfinder Society Organized Play convention season and added product pages to , I would like to formally introduce you to our Special event schedule and the rest of Season 6, the Year of the Sky Key:

I want to make sure we have our cover designs finalized for the Season 7 scenarios before they appear on the website with their own product pages, but I'm sure you would appreciate hearing little more about what's in store there.

  • Pathfinder Society Scenario #7–01: "Between the Lines" (Tier 1–5): Rival explorers have beaten the Pathfinders to a valuable site in Katapesh, but fortunately most of the riches—including the obscure text the Society sought in the first place—have ended up in the capitol's extensive bazaars. What is at first a routine shopping trip spirals out of control as the PCs uncover the writing's secret past—and secret messages.
  • Pathfinder Society Scenario #7–02: "Six Seconds to Midnight" (Tier 3–7): A strange confluence of circumstances leaves the researchers of Uringen understaffed and in need of able-bodied assistants. Conveniently, recent Pathfinder Society experiments call for a rare reagent found only in that area, and the two organizations have negotiated a mutually beneficial deal. Can the PCs reach the secluded settlement in time to witness this extraordinary event—and handle the phenomenon's aftermath?
  • Pathfinder Society Scenario #7–03: "The Bronze House Reprisal" (Tier 5–9): A recent assault on the Pathfinder Society has renewed hostilities with the Aspis Consortium, and clues left behind point to one of its masterminds: the gold agent Maiveer Sloan. By infiltrating one of the Consortium's artifact-smuggling operations, the PCs can sabotage their rivals' criminal operations and send a clear message: No attack will go unanswered.

There are lots of exciting adventures in the works!

A renaissance of archaeology. A renaissance of war with the Aspis.

I am very, very excited for Season 7.

Those are pretty stable, and I don't expect any major changes to the factions or their philosophies. Of course, player feedback and the reporting checkboxes can help to steer the flavor at a more gradual pace.

Sloan? I knew we were going to have to kill him.

Those have stabilized and there are no plans to change them for the foreseeable future. We've done a lot of work to get them to where we think they should be. With the soon to be released Faction Journal Cards, we hope that they take back a very popular and important place for PFS.

Oh, these look very cool!

I get to run a Hao Jin Tapestry scenario at Gen Con (twice!), and "The Bronze House Reprisal". These sound like they'll be fun! Especially the latter... ESPIONAGE!

Definitely looking forward to these scenarios, and also happy to see us return to Ustalav, a region that I feel is "horrifically" underused.

I'm sure that there will be much whispering, way ahead of the convention.

John & Mike -- thanks for getting the info out so early. As someone who loves to plan, having all this info way ahead of GENCON event registration is such a wonderful treat. Oh and they all sound amazingly fun it will be tough to decide which to do when! Thanks!

I'm curious, is this going to be a meta-plot focused season, like Season 5, or is it going to be an unconnected grab-bag, like Season 6?

That's a tough one, as there's definitely an underlying plot connection planned for the season, but we're still going to see a healthy dose of eclectic one-shot adventures that travel to a wide variety of places.

I really like the geographic variety that Season 6 has managed, and I believe that's a substantial feature that attracted many of our long-time players in earlier seasons. Certainly, Pathfinder Society Organized Play is well suited to exploring underrepresented regions and revisiting time-honored classics. While I fault myself for not spreading the Sky Key elements more evenly over the course of the season (and thus advancing one of the central season-long plots), I am quite happy with its diversity in destinations.

So to answer your question in a slightly more direct way, I foresee a slightly stronger metaplot than exists for Season 6 (but not so all-encompassing as Season 5) while also maintaining the large amount of regional dabbling we have seen in Season 6. I am confident that when combined with the broadly appealing metaplot I have in store, this should be a great balance that many many participants should enjoy.

A boatload of season 6 scenarios, FOUR specials (including the Aspis Consortium and Kobold PCs), and then info on the first three scenarios from the start of season 7? Along with the reveal of We Be Goblins Free! for Free RPG Day, this is more news than I can cope with in one week!

Paz goes for a lie down...

Probably too early to say, but what is the anticipated breakdown of scenarios by Tier in Season 7? i.e. how many 1-5, 3-7, etc?

I have a pretty detailed in-house spreadsheet that establishes how many of each tier we're expecting. I'm not ready to release the exact numbers (things tend to evolve a bit over the course of the season to meet story demands), but I can give you a general sense.

Tier 1–5: As in the past several season, expect a Tier 1–5 or Tier 1–2 released most months (not quite every month). These adventures help get new characters started and give veteran players good opportunities to play alongside new players.

Tier 3–7: Proportionally, I expect slightly more Tier 3–7 scenarios in Season 7 than there were in Season 6. I've heard concerns that once a character's out of the Tier 1–5 range, the play opportunities begin to dry up, so I'm pushing for slightly higher production of these.

Tier 5–9: Proportionally, we're expecting about the same number of these.

Tier 7+: If all goes according to plan, expect a higher-than-usual number of high-level scenarios. I recognize that for many players, playing these adventures can be its own reward and a way of saying "thank you" for one's commitment to the campaign. In Season 7, I'm hoping to give these dedicated participants something extra and those who haven't yet reached higher-level play something to cool to aim for.

If 3-7 increases proportionally, 5-9 remains the same proportionally, and 7+ increases proportionally, and there are not going to be more total scenarios (this wasn't stated here, I know), then does this mean that there will be fewer 1-5 scenarios, proportionally?

I feel like I'm listening to an earnings call, where you want to be careful what you go on the record as saying, but trust that your audience can do the math.

And if you do the math, there's one very clear implication here, regarding an unstated category.

Hmmm, if I were to guess, and guessing I'm doing.

There is a second PFS developer now days. (Well, technically an assistant developer, but who's counting)

Once convention season is over and John manages to escape the chains on his desk for more than 6 hours a day, one could imagine PFS putting out a bit more content.

I have my doubts that 3 scenarios every month is in the cards at the moment,

but note the comment is 7+ not 7-11. So maybe 4 more scenarios, a 3-7 and a 3part seeker arc?

4/5

Really? I do not recall him saying that at all.

Then to be on the safe side, I'll delete that comment for now.

Silver Crusade 4/5

New Seeker Arc sounds likely and cool...but hopefully it will be in the 2nd half of the season, so I can play Eyes of the Ten before it retires.

I don't like creating new PCs just so I can play. I have a just turned 4th, a 7th and a 9th. Finding tables for my 7th and 9th has been a challenge. Thanks for (hopefully) creating more opportunities for 7+ play.

Excited for all the upcoming Paizo goodness! On a side note the the meta-plot for season 6 may not have been as prevalent as in season 5, but I enjoyed both the sky key meta plot and season 6 as a whole immensely.
