Pathfinder Battles Preview: When Animals Attack

Friday, March 14, 2014

We've already previewed several animals from the upcoming Reign of Winter set of prepainted Pathfinder Battles figures. We've seen a Falcon, a Goat, an Owl, a Fox, and more, making Reign of Winter the most animal-friendly set of figures we've produced today.

AND THERE ARE STILL MORE ANIMALS TO COME!

This week's preview features three more, pretty much rounding out the animals (or animal-like) creatures in the set. Except for one weird one I'll reveal in a future preview.

Up first this week is the Raven, a perfect familiar for the Adventure Path's many witches, or a great companion for one of your player characters. The Raven has a relatively simple paint job, but manages to still look great. It's a Small, common figure.

We've already revealed one Winter Wolf in human form, Greta, and this week we're showing off the genuine article. Check out this ferocious canine, captured mid-howl. This nasty beast is sure to terrorize your player characters either as a genuine Winter Wolf, or as a pack leader teamed up with the Wolf figure in our very first set, Heroes & Monsters! The Winter Wolf is a Large, uncommon figure.

Everyone loves Giant Weasels. Now you can admire them as they chew up your player characters on the game table! The Giant Weasel is a Large, uncommon figure.

And that's it for this week. Stay tuned next Friday for more exciting previews of the Reign of Winter set, which is currently scheduled for a May release!

These are nice! Since I sell minis online, part of my interest in new ones is always mercenary, and I'm sure the raven (given its popularity as a familiar) and winter wolf will be very popular. (Nice that the wolf is uncommon, too!) The weasel, not so much, but it's still a nice mini, and I don't think there's anything out there already that's like it. (The Fiendish Dire Weasel in DDM is smaller and never really worked for me anyway, and the only other thing remotely close was the Fiendish Dire Wolverine, which also never really impressed me.)
I am a little surprised, though, that you guys did a raven when there's already one presently available through the Dungeon Crawler line. Though I think I'll prefer this sculpt a bit.

Any chance of a different angle on the Giant Weasel?

They do look interesting, bu tth eface looks flat to me and I wonder if it is the angle of the shot.

I dig it!

I'm not sure how I feel about the weasel. Like danielc mentioned, it might be the angle of the shot, but it's coming off as a little too canine for me.

The raven, on the other hand.....perfect!!!

Huzzah! Thank you so much Erik. All three will have a place on my table.

I am looking forward to building my army of giant ice ferrets. Dooks of dooooom!

Probably not until we get actual production samples in the office, in about a month's time.

Wasn't sure how I'd take the plethora of animals in this set. Certainly the four we've seen so far are great. Three more? Too many animals. Nah, these are great. Raven is a great mini and common - so easy to assemble a nasty flock. Weasel, love it. Great pose just cries out weasel, what I'm going to do with a large weasel I'm not sure, I'll get 3-4 since it's uncommon but I'm sure I can come up with something weird to amuse(?) my players. Maybe he can be he mount for my gnomish or halfing ranger?

WInter wolf - WOW. Been waiting on this since the set was announced and all I can say is great stuff! That is an awesome looking winter wolf; great pose with some great detail (love the mouth). If the final paint is close to this it will be a much wanted mini for me. Looks to be a very large, large mini, so should look great on the table.

I'm really liking all the animals in this set! The winter wolf is awesome, and I'll find plenty of uses for the raven and weasel.

Count me in as a big fan of the animals. I like them. I'm not sure if I really needed the raven, but we shall see what it looks like on release. In the end I'm always good with animals to add a more realistic element to our fantasy world. Of course in the end they will attack! Animals are always good, but it would be best if they were ones which we haven't seen before in plastic. I'm very happy with these!

The raven you can use as the shapeshifting terror bogeyman Valravn.

Or if you have two of them as Huginn and Muninn from norse myths of course.

or with 30 or 40 mixed with similar numbers of owls and falcons, you could put your players through an homage to The Birds. Of course in this homage there is an explanation, an evil Tengu Druid is manipulating them all in honor of the Demon Lord Pazuzu.

That is a very cool way to work with Pazuzu!

It would be fun to see a Pazuzu miniature in the future :-)

Indeed, Pazuzu is large so they can slip him in any set they like.

I love the raven and definitely will pick it for my collection, but i personally am not interested in more animals like the wolf and weasel, i hope to see more monstrous creatures in the future.

The raven is fantastic, I'll take a murder, please.

I need to see the Winter Wolf at some different angles, but I think I'll be quite pleased with it as well.

The Giant Weasel seems a little off. And an odd choice, at any rate. But, I don't have anything like it, so I'll keep an open mind.

Large wolf, awesome! Definitely gonna want several of those.

I'm glad to hear these are the last animals in the set. Too many imo.

The winter wolf was needed however, so I'm happy about that.

The lack of fey and frost giants is surprising, and there are so many cool creatures from book 4 we haven't seen yet :(

26 more to go, here's to hoping!

I really like these animal minis! Today I was talking about Pathfinder with my 4 year old and he said (in that 4-year-old, matter-of-fact way) that I need to tell "the people who make the minis that they should make a Snowy Owl and send one to you."

I told him that I would certainly tell them. :) So, Eric Mona, you now have an advance order for a Snowy Owl miniature from a future Pathfinder player!

This winter New England has seen an influx of Snowy Owls. They are currently my son's favorite bird.

Liberty's Edge

Nice looking figures. Too bad we already encountered them all in the AP.

RPG Superstar 2011 Top 16

That raven will work for Wodes in the Jade Regent AP! Cool!

Finally a Dire Weasel for my kobold to ride!

Actually, there is a module for this. It's called "Wings over Freeport".

I love all three of these.

I'm glad to see that the Winter Wolf looks like the description given for the Winter Wolf Worg in the Bestiary 1 on page 280, complete with pale blue eyes. This means it can be a large Magical Beast, a type that is quite common in all my campaigns.

I like the pose of this raven. I'm a huge fan of ravens, and pleased to see it as a common. I look forward to putting together an unkindness of them to continually terrorize my players. I'll also be using these frequently in my Wheel of Time campaign, as everyone knows that Ravens, Crows and Rats are usually spies for the Dark One.

I love weasels, so the bigger the better. I can't wait to put together my own confusion to attack my group.

I'm an easy sell when it comes to animals, but I do like all three of these.

I don't like getting too critical of sculpts with these preliminary pictures. I've found that in each set there is usually a sculpt or two that I was unsure about but which turned out great, while there is often a sculpt I was sure would work but instead disappoints.

I'm not sure if you are referring to a group of ravens or not, but if so the correct term is unkindness. But I agree, these are fantastic and I can't wait to unleash an unkindness of ravens on my players.

An unkindness of ravens and a murder of crows. :)

I just realized the weasel is the wrong size.

I guess it's a Dire Weasel, they're large, giant weasels are medium.

The giant weasel from the adventure path is in fact large. This arctic version seems to be different from the one published in B4.

Ahhh, just a variant then. Good info thanks!
