Pathfinder Battles Preview: Ssssssuper Miniatures!

Friday, August 23, 2013

We're finally back from the madness of Gen Con, and the coming of another Friday means it's time for another preview of miniatures from October's Legends of Golarion set of 55 prepainted Pathfinder Battles miniatures! We showed off about 30 figures at the Paizo booth at Gen Con last weekend, and I've been seeing candid photos posted all over the internet. The best gallery of Pathfinder Battles goodness comes from the fine folks over at Crit to Hit, who captured the entire display with nice high-res images.

That said, it's still pretty difficult to make out some of the details, so I wanted to circle around a bit and show some close-ups of a few of the set's figures. We'll have plenty of new-new reveals once my photographer gets back from vacation next week, but for now, feast your eyes on better views of some of the sssset's sssscaly sssserpentfolk!

Here we have the Degenerate Serpentfolk, a rough-and-tumble front-line fighter ready to tear you apart and fill your veins with poison. This gentleman is not so urbane or intelligent as his fellow serpentfolk in this set, but at the common rarity you're going to get enough of him to make a nice little warband. This and the other serpentfolk are perfect for the Serpent's Skull Adventure Path or any other adventure that pits the party against eldritch, intelligent evil from a bygone age.

This Medium uncommon figure is the Serpentfolk Mystic, a cunning spellcaster from a long lineage of poisonous vipers. His picture comes straight from Bestiary 2, where you can find all kinds of useful serpentfolk game statistics.

This scaly spellslinger dwells in the deepest serpentfolk temples, honoring long-dead serpent gods with time-forgotten rituals rich with sacrifice and debasement. He works perfectly as a key character in the Serpent's Skull Adventure Path or as a snake-themed master villain of your own design. WizKids did a great job on his intricate robe and fine sculpt details. This rare figure is definitely one you will want to add to your collection.

That's it for this week of recovery from Gen Con. I'll be back next week with a large preview that includes some stuff you definitely haven't seen yet, no matter how hard you looked at Gen Con!

Speaking of the con, thanks to everyone who showed Paizo their support over the weekend. I enjoyed personally talking to you about the miniatures line and were it's going, and I know I speak for the entire Paizo staff when I say it is always a joy to meet you guys in person. Your passion for Pathfinder really helps us recharge our own batteries, and we always come back from the show full of energy and with great ideas of where to go from here.

It is most appreciated!

Great stuff, hope my wallet holds up because I can't imagine passing on this set.

Serpentfolk! 3 of them! Yay! I don't know if everyone feels this way, but I really like it when we see a bunch of figures to support a particular race come out in the same set (as with the grindylows and sea devils in S&S), rather than being spread out over several. This is great.

I do because it gives you diversity in whatever scenario your running. These are nice looking minis. It is too bad I have to decide between all three of these sets for Christmas because they all have something unique to offer, LOL.

One thing concerned me about my upcoming Skull & Shackles/Freeport/Razor Coast mash-up campaign I'm working on for the new year: lack of serpentfolk. This is great news and the minis are beautiful!

All three of these guys look amazing. I agree that getting several matching pieces in the same set is the way to go. The first group that really impressed me were the Stone Giants (and Dire Bear) from Rise of the Runelords. But, back to the serpentfolk, I really like how the degenerate looks like a cunning hunter while the other two look regal and intelligent. They look highly organized and a force not to be taken for granted.

Agreed Berk. Loved the Stone giants. Matched sets are so good, even better to see three variations on a race in the set. These are some very nice looking serpenfolk and I love th efact that the haughtiness and arrogance seems to seep through in the sculpt as you progress formt he degenerate to the spellcaster.

I just hope that they do Pugwampis. I hate those guys, but they are so cute!

There are too many (redacted) snakes on this (redacted) blog!!

Not really. They look great

What kind of bags were those for sale that had the art from the beginner box and the new Rise of the Rune Lords?

If these minis weren't random, I'd own a bunch. It's annoying to get 20 human monks when I just want two mind flayers. And once the packs are broken open an re-sold as singles, the "rares" are too expensive. Lamesauce.

I think this is one area that the Pathfinder Sets have excelled at. Cases are fairly predictable in distribution, and they consist of more of the pieces you need a lot of and singles of things that you only need one. Now, the distribution is generally based on some AP, so your mileage may vary on what you think is the right distribution. But other companies didn't take usage into account at all. It was all about building up the collector value of certain pieces in order to get you to buy more.

Not only that, but they re-package minis into themed sets in case you really just don't want most of what comes in a particular set. Not many companies are willing to do this. The goblin and undead sets are marvelous whether you by a single pack or a whole box. Why more companies didn't figure this out, I don't know.

The decision making about what they offer is one of the things that I really like about the Pathfinder Battles line. People like Erik play the game, have their own minis collections and listen to the community to minimize the BS and produce quality products consisting of everything we need and nothing we don't. They've gone against conventional grain in what they make and how they break it down for purchase. I hope this strategy pays off and they stay in business for a very long time because of it.

Lord Kakabel, for an example of what Berk mentioned, I just got my Skull and Shackles case in today.

I got 5 of one of the commons, and that was the most I got of any particular model. The least I got of a common was 3, with most of them being 4.

No duplicate rares, exactly one of each in my case, and all the uncommons were two or three of each.

Same thing happened for Shattered Star.

And to add to Lorian's comment, I found the same was true with Rise of the Rune Lords as well. Heroes and Monsters had some minor collation problems, but growing pains are to be expected in a new line. And although undead isn't out yet, I suspect its breakdown will be similar to We Be Goblins (3 of each common, 1 of each rare). That and the reasonable availability of repaints (We be Goblins, the 1st encounter pack & the upcoming undead set) makes it easier to track who's attacking what. Paizo really does listen to their customer base.

I love the serpent folk and I should have them about the time my Serpent Skull group faces a city full.

I was thinking as I see what is coming in Legends - there are figures from Legacy of Fire, Serpent Skull and other APs that have not gotten dedicated set treatment. I would like to see some Carrion Crown figures in this. And of course the Whispering Tyrant. I may never use it but I certainly want it.

Thanks for another great set of minis and I can't wait for these to be available.

Yessss! Now all my Serpent's Skull campaign needs is an

Serpent's Skull spoiler:
avatar of Ydersius miniature! Pretty please?

I haven't checked the art for that monster, so I could be way off, but would maybe this work?:

Mini stand-in:
Yuan-Ti Anathema from the DDM set Against the Giants

Thematically it fits perfectly, thank you very much for that pointer! I even considered it at some point but neither description, depiction nor mechanics of the actual guy align with that sculpt, sadly. It just doesn't feel right.

But thanks anyways!

Looks like good stuff, I think I will buy my first case soon.

I've already GMed through Serpent's Skull, but I am probably going to have to pick up some of these serpentfolk for when I start my mythic expansion of that campaign!

I wanted a mini for that battle badly that I spent a month making one... :D

So now that the Con is over, and we're getting previews again, what's the verdict on Konkrud and Reta's Bridesmaid? Any left over from the cons?

Nice mod! Good job.

Absolutely amazing! It seems WizKids keeps getting better and better with each set...

That is... I am... wow! Very nicely done! I had exactly something like this in mind but sadly I don't have your skills so I'll have to wait and see if Paizo starts releasing minis for all the BBEGs (which I think would be a good idea for a small set).

They show up as being on backorder... which seems odd. Either they have them or they do not? Or they are buried in a box labelled "GenCon 2013" somewhere underneath a pallet of other similarly labelled boxes which are currently not a priority to open :)

From what I understand it's a case of misaligned schedules. A slot emerged in Liz's schedule to do the 'create product page' job, but the warehouse have yet to have the slot for 'count how many Ritas have returned from Indy' job. Thus back order to prevent people buying Ritas that don't exist
