Mythic Preview—Mythic Lich

Wednesday, August 14, 2013

Time for one more preview before Mythic Adventures releases this Thursday at GenCon! Here's the example mythic lich! (A mythic lich gains additional abilities at tier 8th, 9th, and 10th, such as the power to immediately counterspell hostile magic, cast 1st-level spells at will, healing every time it casts a spell, and dispel checks always rolling twice and using the result that's more favorable to the lich.)

SPECIAL ABILITIES

Creeping Paralysis (Su): A creature that strikes a mythic lich with a natural weapon, unarmed strike, or non-reach manufactured weapon, or otherwise touches the lich must save or be affected by the lich's paralyzing touch ability. This triggers only once per round per creature.

Mythic Phylactery (Su): A mythic lich's phylactery can't be harmed by non-mythic sources. At 8th rank, the phylactery becomes a minor artifact, and can be destroyed by only one specific method.

Mythic Potency (Su): A mythic lich adds its rank to the save DCs for its fear aura and paralyzing touch abilities.

Mythic Spells (Su): A mythic lich gains Mythic Spell Lore as a bonus feat. The lich has a pool of magical power it can draw upon for casting mythic spells. Up to twice per day, it can use this power to cast a mythic spell without expending any uses of mythic power.

Augmented Spellcasting (Su): At 7th rank, a mythic lich selects one of the following archmage or hierophant abilities: arcane surge (see page 14), inspired spell (see page 32), recalled blessing (see page 32), or wild arcana (see page 14). Once chosen, this selection can't be changed.

Spell Perception (Su): At 7th rank, a mythic lich automatically notices spellcasting within 60 feet. The lich automatically pinpoints the location of the caster, identifies the spell being cast, and knows the intended target or area of the spell.

A mythic lich is an undead spellcaster who gave up standard mythic path abilities in favor of abilities that preserve her existence and enhance her unnatural power.

is it me or is this lich's equipment a little underwhelming?

Is that XP value correct?

EDIT: Yes, it's correct, as Blackfingers explains below.

Mythic Lich = Mythlich?

Epic Meepo, I believe the CR 17 includes the mythic tiers - The lich would be CR 14 without being mythic, and 7 tiers increases CR by 3.

This whole thing seems a little underwhelming and weird.

Ah, that would explain it, then.

Just goes to show how confused I am by the whole MR notation.

Scarab Sages

At tier 7, a mythic phylactery is meaningless.

Its destruction is trivial for any tier 1 mythic character. For a character without mythic tiers, there is very little difference between what the power does at tier 1 and tier 8.

But not for a high-level non-mythic party...

I was expanding upon my original post when you responded 8P

I do like the Creeping Paralysis and Spell resistance. Hopefully is will slow a level appropriate party down enough to have a real fight instead of a 2 round game of rocket tag.

Mythic Phylactery. The 8th tier ability sounds a lot like Voldemort's Horcruxes.

Scarab Sages

This has me itching to see what Mythic Spiritual Weapon is/does.

it seems under welming, becasue you don't know what mythic spells can do, in the play test mythic meteror swarm could one hit a tarrasque if the correct mythic power was used in conjuction with it. even if the tarrasque made it's save. the reall power is going to come in there, also note the mythic initative in the stat block. the creature could end up having two turns in a single round to players one turn. Also the mythic surge allow this creature to add 1d10 to any roll it may fail on a d20 after the fact. it fails a save it can use a mythic power to add a 1d10 to that roll. at least that how it was in the play test. I am sure that fuction stuck. we really won't know the strenght and ablity of this creature until we see how the rules changed since the play test.

Mythic flame strike and mythic harm should be pretty awesome.

It likely comes down to how well the DM plays it in combat. With the right terrain/envirement, a Mythic Blade Barrier could be...devastating:O

The Exchange

This makes me wonder about something only vaguely related - how does a monster become mythic? PCs achieve that by doing something exceptional. How do monsters?

Any way the DM wants them to become Mythic!

As someone running Way of the Wicked, I don't think a Cleric of Asmodeus is unusual at all. Most of my players can make that paralysis save. Checking for it every time you hit or get hit means they WILL fail eventually.

This is a CR 20?

CR17

ulgulanoth, the MR 7 adds 3 CR (divide by half rounding down) to the creature making it effectively CR 20.

Attack bonus on the touch is way low for some reason, first thing that jumped out at me....

Nope Ulgulanoth is right - a normal 13th level Lich would be CR 14, so adding half the Mythic ranks gets you CR17.

Paizo have avoided us having to do fiddly CR math when we glance at creature.

Yeah, +3 touch with a +9 BAB even with an STR 8 does seem odd.

Maybe it's supposed to be a secondary attack after the mace, so suffers an additional -5?

I think listing them together like that indicates a single attack combination. As opposed to having them on separate Melee-headed lines.

But I don't get to study a lot of stat blocks - I'm usually playing rather than running the game...

Yes, the touch is a secondary natural attack when used with the mace.

I will buy this book.

I like how Mythic can be applied to lower level beings. Granted, 13th is high level (to me), but I'm so glad that Mythic can be used before 20th level.

That SR is a bit ludicrous. And again that famous DR epic witch definition still doesn't exist in the current ruleset.

Uh...have you checked page 7 of MA for what DR/Epic means?

A cleric of Asmodeus that lacks Infernal as a language, but knows Abyssal? I find that much stranger than the lich part.

You know, I think the brooch resembles Urgathoa's unholy symbol... so maybe the "Asmodeus" thing's a fluke? Then again, Urgathoa doesn't provide her clerics with the Magic domain.

So as I understand it a lich can either have mythic character tiers, or the mythic lich template.

Which will Tar-Baphon be?

Oh, look. It's Cardinal Thorn's girlfriend.
