Pathfinder Battles Preview: Big Bads (Volume 2)

Friday, May 25, 2012

Here we are on the precipice of a three-day weekend, and I got so excited I completely forgot to put together a blog for today's Pathfinder Battles preview! So let's cut to the chase and get to the previews of two of the Big Bads from the Rise of the Runelords set of prepainted Pathfinder Battles miniatures!

Both of these characters come from the fifth volume of the Rise of the Runelords Adventure Path, “Sins of the Saviors,” by Stephen S. Greer. Last week I revealed some of the rank-and-file badguys from that epic adventure, and this week I've got a couple of significant enemies that perfectly set the stage for the campaign's endgame.

First up we have The Scribbler, the first big villain of the adventure. One of the evil goddess Lamashtu's most powerful mortal servants, The Scribbler dwells very near the home base of your Rise of the Runelords heroes, and he's sure to be a sworn enemy of your player characters. With a nasty sword and a mask covering half his face, The Scribbler easily doubles as a bandit leader or any kind of unique villain your campaign requires. We've placed him at the rare rarity.

Remember the Warriors of Wrath from last week's preview blog? Well, those nasty ladies need a leader, and the good (well, ok, not “good” per se) Highlady Athroxis is quite happy to keep them in line. This high-level eldritch knight Highlady of the Halls of Wrath is ready to unleash some whupass on your PCs with her +3 adamantine flaming ranseur, molded here largely in clear plastic to sell the flame effects. Naturally, this uber-high-level adversary with the shiny clear plastic bits falls into the rare rarity.

So that's it for this week of fun in the sun. Only a few more miniatures to show off, including a “chilly” mini almost no one is expecting to help you cool off on these warm summer days!

Both of these are marvelous. Can't wait to see them in person.

Ice Elemental?

SCRIBBLER, my favorite bad guy, besides Karzoug,. I had a hard time waiting for the original set to come out, I can hardly contain myself. Now I just need to find some gamers worthy to play the campaign. Well done paizo, well done.

Interesting does this mean book 5 has been significantly changed? (Since in the origonal book the scribbler was encounterd before you came to runeforged)

Nope. He is still under Sandpoint. I left Erik a message. :)

Runelords spoiler:
Well, since IIRC he has the details of how to get into Runeforge, you could argue that that's guarding it...

Yes, yes, yes. All fixed now! :)

Big fan of the scribbler. These weird looking bosses are the kind of enemy that loses a fair bit of impact when one is forced to substitute a more generic mini, in my view.

AGREE! That is what makes this set very special. We have never had a set of minis devoted strictly to a series of modules or AP. I wonder how many out there that has never ran RotR, and never planned on doing so, will give it a whirl because of this awesome set of minis. I'd bet there will be more than just a few.

Later,

Mazra

I fall into the never ran through RotR but now absolutely have to category. I'm looking forward to the Anniversary AP even more after seeing these previews. I do hope Paizo elects to do more AP sets down the road.

I'm a little surprised the Eldritch Knights weren't all replaced with Magi.

Maybe they thought the magi weren't gish enough. ;p

Agreed about the Scribbler. This mini was definitely needed, and the representation looks straight from the illustration. Ditto for the High-Lady.. can't wait to see the flames up close.

I'm guessing Wendigo for next week..
(Hope one's in the set, one of my favorite monsters ever)

Since Thassilonian magic ties very closely to specialized wizardry, EK lets paizo preserve the theme of schools/counter-schools.

Liberty's Edge

And yes, both of these characters were high water marks of the campaign, from design to history to art (art especially). This makes me want to run RotR all over again!

Thassilon is very much about wizards. It was ruled by wizards, and they had wizard apprentices. Magi, not being wizards, didn't really have a role at all in Thassilon... there may have been magi among the elves in the neighboring elven lands... but even then, I think that magi are a relatively "new" class in the world.

Also, I tried not to change things from the original unless I had a very good reason. They were eldritch knights in the first version...

And thus they remain eldritch knights.

Not that many "chilly" creatures in there so I'd have to say it will be

:
the ICE DEVIL form part 6, or the yeti we saw some time ago

** spoiler omitted **

Spoiler:
The yeti is a good guess. I'd go for that or the wendigo.
Liberty's Edge

According to www.pathfinderminis.com, there are seven sculpts yet to be revealed. I'd say the wendigo is a good guess for one of them.
