Advanced Race Guide Art Preview

Thursday, May 24, 2012

It's time for another art preview from the Advanced Race Guide, hitting stores near you next month!

While I think we can all agree on how awesome the wayang and ifrit are, for me this entire book is made complete by the wide-eyed grippli. I usually try not to make inflammatory statements on the blog, but I feel comfortable saying that anybody who isn't inspired by the adorable courage of this bold amphibian archer is a little bit dead inside.

The Wayang looks so sinister. And the Ifrit is certainly inflammatory... But The grippli is the cutest frogman ever. is he using a medium sized long bow?

I want to give the grippli a hug.

Treefrog Man!

<3 grippli.

I just finished an asian art history class, which managed to single-handedly turn the wayang into one of my favorite races. That new picture certainly doesn't hurt that opinion. :D

Liberty's Edge

Great art, though now it makes me want to play an Ifrit Magus with a flaming whip.

Dark Archive

Love Burnyhands McFirewhip. Awesome visual.

I wonder if that's supposed to be a holy symbol on her chest. It's not one I recognize, but I have no idea what the holy symbols to many of the lesser fire dieties (like Angradd or Zursvatar) would look like.

Moloch seems like a good choice, with fire as a domain and the whip as a favored weapon (and, as an arch-devil, well suited to having a tiefling cleric).

The fire-writing along her leg-wraps and on her flapping waist-cloth-thingie are awesome. Nice dynamic pose, too. Very active.

Dark Archive

I may be a little dead inside. :-k

Are you sure that's not a sczarni in the right most picture?

It's not easy being green

I've never wanted to play a grippli... until now. Such is the power of Paizo's art quality.

Not being critical at all, but can anyone more knowledgeable tell me why Ifrit's have horns? They're half fire elementals right? Do fire elementals have horns? Again, just curious.

Think, 'less half-fire elemental' and 'more half-efreeti.'

Efreeti do have horns, and would be appropriate (and that's assuming she isn't a tiefling or something even funkier).

Plus, 'half-fire-elemental?' Ouchie. Where would you, um, you know... There's not enough burn ointment in the world...

Grippli bard anyone?

Hellfire elemental?

Btw, since this is likely to be the only source book with pictures of most of these races, I hope there are lots of pictures of each one and not just one picture of one gender on the one page for each race.

Sovereign Court

Agreed. The grippli are indeed inspirational.

Question: I realize the book is marketed to players who wish to play non-traditional races and whatnot, but shouldn't a GM be able to make just as much use of the book to create great memorable NPCs? I really hope so, and am looking forward to the book for that reason =)

Most of the book (in terms of content per section) is actually given over to the Core races. I wouldn't say it's just for players who want to play non-traditional.

Nice pics. Love the flame whip. The Wayang looks creepy. The grippli is adorable.

Yes. Yes they can.

Of course! Crazy races are for everyone!

Liberty's Edge

I love the ifrit.

"That what I saaaaaid!"

I confess, I've had plans for a grippli paladin named Glenn who eventually wields the Masamune siiince, ooooh about 1995.

Finally, a dream is about to come true.

The ifrit looks nice, but the grippli is just ridiculous. The wayang artwork, however, is really repulsive and looks like something from a very different game.

Love the Dirk Dastardly moustache on the Wayang. All he needs now is a snickering dog familiar.

"Drat! And Double Drat!"

Liberty's Edge

Grippli make me feel alive inside. O_O

I like the art for Kermit, I mean the Gripli, so does that mean the half-orc will be Miss Piggy;)

Oh, I sincerely Hope not. What's next Fozzy Bugbear? Though I wouldn't mind seeing a multi-racial band of Bards done up like Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem, CAN YOU PICTURE THAT! CAN YOU PICTURE THAT!

Curse the both you! Now the song is stuck in my head! Killer mustache on the.. wayang though.

The first thing I thought of when I saw the Grippli was car insurance and an accent.

Silver Crusade

<3 that art

Wayang is really cool for pulling directly from old puppet designs and bringing back some of that Tony DiTerlizzi vibe that's felt missing from the game for far too long. And wow, that moustache. Look at it.

Ifrit is really cool as well for all those little details. (is that a scarab-ish design on that belt, hard to tell on what I'm viewing it through) Throw in a sword and I'm imagining someone taking up a Balor-inspired fighting style.

And that Grippli is by far the most well armored and most adorable example of that race I've ever seen.

I'm imagining goggles of any kind being bought for them and I can't stop smiling.

Really excited to see the art for the other races now. These three are all winners.

IIRC, I think the races with 4-pages are only getting one piece of art(going from the Duergar preview), and generally of the opposite gender of the pre-existing art already out for them. (Male Ifrit in Bestiary 2, female here for example)

Imagine the 6-pager races will be getting more than one though, right?

Liberty's Edge

The man changed his avatar to a grippli. That is street cred, right there.

Compare and contrast this grippli art to that from the 2e MM. Go on, I'll wait.

Right? Right?

So... is that a he grippli or a she grippli?

That guy to the right is obviously pure evil, he has the mustache!
(why? should my balors also have such a mustache?)

Grand Lodge

I am full of so much love for the Grippli right now. So I pull up their actual stats and I realise the poor Grippli, as currently written, are not good for much unless 90 per cent of your campaign takes place in a swamp. All their racial bonuses are swamp related. I hope ARG addresses this problem!

Paizo has just done impossible. They've given us the Pathfinderized version of Kermit the Frog...and he's out to KILL US ALL...WITH ARROWS!

Appearently, I'm too conservative to appreciate the new (sample) races.
Froggie looks pathetic and sad - get a grip on yourself!
Looking at the Ifrit I thought: oh, a tiefling sorc.
The wayang is too asian for my taste and will never see play in any of the games I GM/play in - not that I'd miss them.

Still hope, folks enjoy the book and it's going to be a(nother) success for Paizo!

Ruyan.

Oh my Kuthon! I'm dead inside! And outside too!

I had a dream about grippli tonight. It was a ... moist dream.

Contributor, RPG Superstar 2010 Top 4

I like 'em all.

The wayang is much closer to what I imagined when I learned about them, versus when I actually saw them in B3.

I can see the ifrit likened to a tiefling sorcerer, but that's okay. Under some circumstances I can see the confusion as entirely appropriate.

I wanna see the Vishkanya!!

HOT POISON GIRLS FTW!

Damn, that Grippli is adorable.

So... Miss Piggy's going to be a half-orc monk/bard, then?? ;-)

Fozzie Bugbear -- ROFL!!!
