Vanquished Beasts!

Friday, October 1, 2010

If you've been paying attention over the last few weeks, you've probably noticed a lot of talk about the whole office putting great effort into wrapping up the forthcoming Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Bestiary 2. Well, as of the end of the day Wednesday, the beasts—over 300 of them— were successfully wrangled into line, made to look sharp, and shipped off to the printer. Look for Bestiary 2 in bookstores, hobby stores, and on paizo.com in November. In celebration of this event, check out these lovely images:

A Camel Flinging Crustacean?

I need this creature now!

Not sure on 1 and 4 but 2 looks like a Sea giant and 3 may be a arcane or marcane what ever they are called now.

Well hello there...

Have I mentioned I'm a member of several "Save The Whales" groups? Just thought I'd mention it.

You know, if you're free tonight, there's a restaurant down the beach that serves a great tilapia dish...

Silver Crusade

NICE. :D

I'm guessing Orca-lady is either an azata or an agathion. Leaning towards the latter.

Mr. Blue strikes me as an alien. Gotta be.

Liberty's Edge

Man, the orca-chick is smokin'. At least from the waist up. >_<

The first picture reminds me of the giant crab from Island of The Lizard King

Poor Mungo :(

Seconded. If it meant saving her, I might just turn into one of those eco-nuts like on Whale Wars.

Number 4 looks like a water wyvern...?

#1 Giant Scorpionthingy, tossing food/camelsthingies around.
#2 Giant Nereid/Nymphlike Swimsuit Special
#3 Alien Genielike Magocrate
#4 Water Wyvern agreed

Number 3 is deffo Mercane/Arcane.

Are they open? I had assumed they weren't...

If they are though, yeah, that can't be anything but.

edit-Just checked. They're open. There's no way that guy is not a mercane.

(which means my earlier guess is still correct, really. ;P)

Yep, Mercanes are in the SRD.

Giff, hell yeah!

Man I wish, but I don't think anyone tagged 'em while the window was open to do so.

Shame if that's the case. If flintlock-wielding militaristic hippomen don't put a smile on your face, you, sir, are dead inside and have forgotten what it means to love.

Someone did update 'em for 3rd Edition though.

I like them, despite the fact that they consistently make it into any top 10 most silly D&D monster lists that appear.

They would make perfect material for Misfit Planar Monsters Redemmed.

By Todd and Colin. 128 pages. Please.

Silver Crusade

Just accusing the theoretical skeptical reader. ;)

YES.

Especially if they could somehow get moingos!

Mmm....delicious pi....

#1 looks like some sort of fiendish giant scorpion. #2 looks like a sea giant definately. #3 is a mercane like people are saying. I am going to guess that #4 is the brine dragon that Erik mentioned on Facebook.

#1 is in one of the non-Legacy of Fire AP issues... I believe it's called the Sand Stalker. It's original picture shows it with two tails.

Today we are teaching camels how to fly...
I sure HOPE #4 is not a sea wyvern..I just did one of those for an upcoming book...

Awesome art again..so are we talking about a giant scorpion that attacked a bunch of camels or about a camel shooting giant scorpion?

It sure would be entertaining to have a monster with the Camel Cannon (su) power...

I was planning on asking just how much damage does a flung camel deal...

1) Colossal monster of legend or similar
2) Nereid or other water fey
3) Arcane
4) Primal Dragon (water)

I don't think Blue Boy is an Arcane/Mercane, unless Paizo decided to change their description dramatically. Mercane are described as lanky with an extra joint in their (5) fingers. The picture above is a beefy guy with 3 fingers and normal number of joints in them. The main similarities is that they're both blue, alien looking and snazzy dressers. My initial thought was that he's some new kind of Genie, but I'm not sure. Very cool looking regardless.

Not saying anything for or against the mercane theory, but one thing we OFTEN do with monsters from the SRD that aren't from mythology or the public domain is to rework their appearance. The RULES for these guys might be open, but the appearances for them are generally not. Sometimes our redesigns end up looking pretty similar to the way monsters look in the 3rd edition Monster Manual, but we do try to mix that up more often than not.

No need, they updated the Giffs to 3.5e in one of the Dragon Magazine issues, the one with the campaign settings in the Spelljammer article.

Well, a falling camel is a large object not made of stone or another dense material and would deal 2d6 damage. As an improvised weapon, it would incur a -4 penalty on the attack. The problem is the 10 ft. range increment of improvised thrown weapons...

I believe you all mistaken. Picture number one has the Giant Scorpion whose stats can already be found. The new monster for the Bestiary II is actually the Flying Camel Swarm, which as we all know is the greatest hunter in the animal kingdom.

OMG, dung and cover, dung and cover.

I love these pics! And it's nice to see that Eva will be doing art for this book! :)

Nice pics, but they mean nothing without being next to a ToC ;)

Perspective (sp?) is an important thing... and for some reason until just a few minutes ago I had no guesses as to what #4 is supposed to be. But then looking at the wings, I suddenly got the impression of butterflies.

Could pic #4 be of a Faerie Dragon?

Sovereign Court

Faerie Dragons are in the bonus bestiary.

Hmmm... really? For some reason I thought the psuedo-dragon was the one in the Bonus Bestiary. Oh well.

Sovereign Court

And those ripples in the background blue sure look like No. 4 is underwater...

Blackerose wrote:

Meh, consider me unimpressed.

If #3 is not an Arcane/Mercane I will be disappointed. If it is, that is the best picture I have seen of the monster yet.
