Best of Both Worlds

Cover by Ralph Horsley

Some of Golarion's greatest heroes hail from not one world but two, caught between dueling cultures and impulses, and it's your turn to become one of them! Bastards of Golarion is due out soon, and this is one Player Companion you won't want to miss. Here are five reasons why:

  • Half-Elves and Half-Orcs: Readers have been asking for a book on these unusual races for years, and Bastards of Golarion makes such wishes a reality. Numerous details and expanded flavor provide inspiration for these mixed-blooded adventurers and inform players how their half-elf or half-orc character may interact with others in the world of Golarion. Oh, and did I mention a flurry of new traits and rules options for each of these races?
  • Regional Variants: The half-human child of a Snowcaster elf is sure to be different than that of an elf from Kyonin, and the same can be said for desert orcs from Osirion versus orcs from the Hold of Belkzen. All-new details on ten (five for half-elves, five for half-orcs) of these half-blooded variants breathe life into your game and allow for a bevy of new character choices. New alternative racial traits make sure the rules represent your unique character, whether she be descended from the jungle orcs of southern Garund or the mysterious elves of the Mordant Spire.
  • Character Themes: Half-elves and half-orcs aren't the only people of Golarion to come from unusual or dubious origins. Even seemingly unassuming humans can be bastards given the right backstory! Four diverse character themes in this book provide inspiration for an infinite number of characters and stories. Whether your character calls himself a bastard or a celebrity, an outcast or an unfortunate, these character themes and related rules options shine a light on previously unenviable origin stories and show how such characters can rise from regret to resplendence!
  • Half-Race Hometowns: You've decided your bastardly adventurer's race and background story, but where did this character even come from? Information on Averaka—the city of half-orcs—and Erages—haven for half-elves—make sure your bastard's hometown is as fleshed out as she is. Regional traits and archetypes for characters from either of these unique locales tie your character's formidable past to her heroic present.
  • Build-A-Bastard: In addition to details and traits for bastards of unusual origins (such as the strange gillmen of Absalom or the half-hag changelings from northern Avistan), the last few pages of this book provide suggestions and rules for creating characters whose racial ancestry is perhaps less obvious or more distant. Ever wanted to play a human character that's actually 1/8th orc and 1/8th dhampir? This book shows you how.

Illustrations by Ian Llanas and Michael Rookard

And because I would be remiss to write a blog post about this book without including some of its some juicy art, here are two of my favorite pieces to tide you over until Bastards of Golarion is in your hands.

I've been chomping at the bit for this one since it was first listed in the catalog. Nice to see the Player Companion line starting 2014 strong!

"Jungle orcs of southern Garund"? Sounds intriguing! Hopefully some insights into southern Garund.

Can we have a follow up called "Magnificent Bastards of Golarion?"

Half-halflings only get a quarter page.

I agree with Ryan, I've been very much looking forward to this one.

WANT

Are the regional horc and half-elf variants going to have different stat bonuses? Say +2, +2, -2 like other races?

I would still like to see a half elf/half dwarf or a half gnome/half halfling. Still I like the race based books though I miss the old set up when they had culture, history, etc. and all the game mechanics stuff was in the back of the book.

I think this entire article was just an excuse for Patrick to type the word "bastard" over and over again.

Nice job putting together an interesting read, Patrick Renie! :D

Are these archetypes and player options going to be like the skinwalker material, which anyone can select, or is it going to be more like Kobolds of Golarion / Advanced Race Guide in which the subject races are the only ones who can take it without GM accommodation?

I hope this book is all pfs legal without cert sheets. So many races I want to play, perhaps I can't be a dhampir but watered down might be okay? That being said I can't wait to get my hands on this.

Love the sexy Half-Orc art... Still see no mention of the Huarizo though.

Ooooo With art like that I really want to have pawns of this. >.<

It's been over 3 hours without Mikaze showing up.

If it's been 4 hours, then please someone call the medics so they can treat a case of Squee Overdose.

I'd prefer "Gentlemen Bastards of Golarion."

Isn´t the question more how the owlbear is related to all that?

Nope; we went a slightly different route with the variants this time.

Why do the people of Golarion not permit interracial marriage?

Or does "bastard" have some archaic meaning with which I'm not familiar?

Consult the first several pages of the product discussion thread when the title was announced.

I do find it kind of strange that we're going to have rules for the children of desert orcs and sea elves when we don't actually have rules for desert orcs and sea elves.

But that's more of a nitpick, I guess.

Finally! Something to hand to young relatives to explain the facts of life.

Thank goodness.

I've been playing my elf witch with the Darkvision racial trait as part-drow. Will this book contain content to enhance that aspect of my character?

Hmmm. 8 hours now and no sign. Should we send out a search party?

I'd like to build a mul :)

Still no Mikaze, even I am starting to worry.

They said, "Build-A-Bastard."

OH GOD

Absolutely love that half-orc. Could be the heroine of a Golarionified Final Fight. :D And really happy to finally have some male oread artwork. ;)

Actually relieved to know the differences between the half-orc/elf variants won't stat-based. Looking forward to seeing what they really are.

Really excited if this means that there's some real cultural differences between the Belkzen orcs, desert orcs, and the jungle orcs of southern(!) Garund. Especially if we get any hints of some non-evil cultures and tribes.

Been hungry for more details on Averaka ever since it was announced to be in the book. Gah, I could read a whole book about the place.

Really really high hopes for this book. :)

c'mon next week, hurry it up

{in best Krieger/fight announcer voice} By day, she's an unassuming HR Director for the Shadow Lodge. By nights, she's a highly accomplished drift chariot racer. She has recently lost a lot of weight from a pesh addiction, but can still outdrink a thirsty dwarf adventurer. With a record 13 wins, for your underground fighting entertainment, here she is... "The Green Shadow"! {crowd roars}

Now to figure out what badass poem she's got tattooed to her back...

That picture of the half-orc looks like the She-Hulk hopped into a portal going to Golarion.

This is going to be an amazing book. I. Cannot. Wait.

Well, two of the players in my Kingmaker game have just said they want their PCs to have a child. Dad's a dhampir, mum's an aasimar. Build-A-Bastard might be just what I'm looking for.

Almost reminds me of a SGA Wraith queen.

Has anyone gotten their hands on this yet?

No not me...yet.
