Deia |
Deia awakes, goes through her morning rituals, and prepares to set off for the Library.
Heal: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11 Deia looks at Klarah's parents to see how they fared over the night. I'm prepared to use another hex: healing on them if it appears to be helpful.
"Thank you very much for all of your hospitality, Klarah. Assuming that we find people at the library, we will make sure that you get there as well, " she says to the host.
Generally ready to move.
Fallen Asara |
The angel's apology had started something. Whatever she had been intended to be, She would never become. She had been broken and might never be whole again, but she would also never be the monster they tried to turn her into. She was something else now.
Kel hadn't done anything but try to be the best version of himself. He had an angel on his shoulder, and even broken, she was inspiring. For someone like Kel who had learned to thrive on adversity, that was enough.
It was as if all the cruel and spiteful impulses he'd had his whole life suddenly had a new outlet. They flowed into the angel, filtered through her before they reached him. He still felt them, but because they seemed to come from her, they didn't seem so deeply ingrained. Suddenly they were much easier to spot and fight against.
Suddenly the angel wanted to be more than she was. The apology was like the first crack in a dam that held back a flood. The simple realization that she had been a victim of purposeful corruption made her want to fight it. All the self loathing and internalization suddenly flipped.
In his dreams Kel had spent the whole night holding and comforting a crying girl. It was like holding on to a comet.
By the time morning came, the angel's catharsis was over. What was left was rage. Her power flared within him.
They both awoke changed.
Kel the Guardsman |
Surprisingly, Kel was the last one up.
He sat up slowly, wincing as his wounds pulled. He stretched and popped and rubbed his eyes blearily. He looked like he'd hardly slept at all.
He slowly got dressed in his now dry, but still horribly stained shirt and doublet, pulled in his boots, and buckled on his armor. The whole process seemed like he was sleepwalking through it.
By the time he finally stood up, everyone else was pretty much ready to go.
He checked his weapons, stopping for a moment holding Radience, surprised at himself for thinking of the amazing sword as his, sighed at his own odd delusions of grandeur, and finally looked around to see what the others were doing.
"What's this about the library being broke?"
The Unruly GM |
As you handle Radiance during your initial equipment check in the morning, something seems different about it. It feels lighter in your hands, and more radiant. It seems to be emitting a faint golden light as you handle it, and on closer inspection you notice some very, very fine, and very intricate, etchings running along the blade that you could swear weren't there when you found it yesterday.
The sword now functions as a +1 Cold Iron Longsword.
"Aravashnial" |
On hearing that the library is likely damaged, Aravashnial grows visibly anxious.
"We have to get going! We've got to make sure no one's injured! We've got to save the books! It's one of the finest repositories of demon hunting knowledge in all of Mendev, we can't let it be lost!"
The Unruly GM |
And moving on...
The party gathers their belongings and heads into the rain drenched streets. The heavy scent of smoke still fills the air throughout the city, made all the worse by the wind that continues to blow the billowing black clouds back down to the ground. The cobblestone streets, while still seemingly empty of life, have been made slick by the downpour, hampering your movement even more than it would be if it were just the piles of debris alone. By the time you near Blackwing, nearly an hour has passed.
As you walk down the street towards the library, you know something terrible has happened. While the building's front facade still stands, it is surrounded on both sides by massive amounts of rubble. The upper stories of the building seem to have collapsed inward on themselves, spilling large masonry stones, broken bookcases, and numerous papers down the sides of the building and into the gaps between it and its neighbors. One of the two front doors stand open, and inside you can see movement. As you get even closer, you can hear a man yelling from inside.
Deia |
Is it too late for some small actions before we leave the house? If not, Deia will try another heal on Klarah's mother and father. I should have just done that earlier.
After looking at Klara's parents, Deia thinks They are doing better but some more curing can't really hurt them.
"Stars of the sky, mend the wounds of Klarah's Father!" healing: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10
"Stars of the sky, mend the wounds of Klarah's Mother!" healing: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
Once she is done, Deia leaves Klarah with some advice, "I've done about all I can do for your parents. Try to keep them fed and as comfortable as possible. They may yet recover."
Now in the present...
Deia struggles through the wet and slippery streets with the rest of the group. Once they get close to the library, Deia and Astra survey the scene of destruction.
Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26
"Agreed, Tina. Let's hurry but be smart. This could be a case of people in actual danger or it could just be somebody lashing out in frustration. Much like the group that had Klarah, we must assess the situation carefully." Deia tries to get people moving toward the library.
The Unruly GM |
As you continue to get closer to the library, you see that the destruction is almost total. All that seems to remain is the main entry hall. The yelling continues unabated as you approach within fairly clear earshot. The voice is very obviously that of a man, and he's now shouting "Yes! That's more like it! Now pick up those from over there, and finish the circle! You've stalled enough as it is!"
Can I get something of a marching order? I'll be setting up a map tonight, and I'd like to know general positioning in relation to each other.
The Unruly GM |
The party makes their way to the door and peers inside. You're able to see a couple people standing just inside the doors who appear to be Tieflings. They stand with knives in hand and their backs to the door, watching as an older man in scholarly robes is pulling books from one of the few standing bookshelves. Another man, dressed in bloodstained heavy armor and bearing a shield emblazoned with the symbol of Iomedae, yells at him and waves a large mace in his direction. "Hurry it up! I'm sick of waiting!"
At the back of the room you can see a pile of books laid out in a rough circle. Sitting within the circle, bound, are four other people who are also dressed in robes. Three of the people in the circle are shaking and crying, while the fourth, a rather stubborn looking woman, angrily glares at them. Standing beside the book pile is yet another Tiefling, this one bearing a torch.
Map updated. The yellow markings are the pile of books. They are to be treated as difficult terrain when the time comes.
Maximillian Akorius |
Max sees enough of the scene to conclude that some combination of book burning and witch burning is about to happen. Seeing his fellow scholars in peril, Max is motivated to act. He calls upon his magic for insight into why this is happening. Cast detect thought. He steps forward for a clearer view through the doorway.
"Stop this at once! This is no way to treat such keepers of knowledge. Surely a devotee of Iomedae would not have forgotten that his goddess was once a herald of Aroden, the god of wisdom and progress. What is the explanation for this?"
Deia |
Deia cringes and tries to calm Max, "Max, Max, don't alert them" she says quietly. There goes the element of surprise, she thinks.
Deia readies a cast of Hex: Slumber DC 15, will especially targeting anybody who would harm the people on the circle or anybody burning the books.
The Unruly GM |
As Max steps up and starts yelling, all eyes turn to him. When he demands an explanation, the Tieflings all start laughing. The man in heavy armor chuckles as well, saying "An explanation? The war is lost, so I've joined the winning side! Now I'll add you to my list of victims..."

Full actions. Max kinda blew your chance at a surprise round by making that announcement.
Kel the Guardsman |
"Your list just ended, traitor." Kel growled, rushing forward to face the armored traitor. Power surged from within him, holy light washing his black eyes to gold, the edge of his blade glowing similarly.
Smite Evil on the armored jerk. If he's somehow not evil, remove 2 from attack and 1 from damage.
Attack, Charge, Smite: 1d20 + 7 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 7 + 2 + 2 = 26

Round 1
Deia moves into the library. I'm not sure if the outside of the building is to scale, so I've moved her 10' in.
Deia then tries to Hex one of the tieflings. "Stars of the sky, cause the tiefling to slumber!" Hex: Slumber (DC15, will) on one of the bad guys. I'm not sure who is who yet. Deia will target unengaged spellcasters, then unengaged melees, then leaders, then those engaged in melee in that order. If I get a change to point it out better before Deia's turn, I will.

Round 1 Update
Rex barges into the library and shoots the tiefling woman.
The tiefling woman steps up to Rex and swings her weapons at him, scoring a hit with one.
Attack1: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11 Attack2: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19 Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
The male tiefling near the front creates a dark cloud of shadow and brings it with him to the doorway. The darkness effect only reduces the light level by one step. Which means it's only dropping visibility to "dim light." It provides a 20% miss chance unless you have darkvision.
The tiefling at the back of the library casts a spell. A bolt of energy flies from his fingers and strikes Kel. Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

The male tiefling strikes at Tina as she moves past him, but he fails to connect.

Max steps up and using his scale on Rex.
Lann moves up and swings at the male tiefling, but the attack is parried skillfully.

Deia moves into the library and puts the tiefling mage to sleep!
Will: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10

Anevia moves behind Lann and fires her longbow at the male tiefling. The shot passes through the melee and embeds itself in a bookshelf, amazingly not hitting anyone as it flew.

Round 2
I'm a bit confused about who is who here. On the map, the male figure near the doors is the one that is the one that is slumbered and then the one with the purple circle is the other caster?
Deia calls out and points to the male caster "Leave that one alone for now and focus on the leader!"
Going to wait to see how the battlefield shapes up before announcing an action.
Kel the Guardsman |
Thanks for the advice..
Kel grunted under the power of the traitor's blow, quickstepped back and swung again with the glaive. It trailed gold energy in it's wake.
Attack, Smite: 1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 7 + 2 = 29
Damage: 1d10 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 4 + 1 = 15
