We rotated DM duties so the same characters ended up in the games, the decanter was likewise popular when we sojourned in dark sun.
That darn decanter became the focus of not one but two worlds. The closest explaination I have is like an AP set at the World Serpent Inn (by the way is a good way for non-natives to arrive).
KenderKin |
The World Serpent Inn was amazing! I like how many of the 'gaming old guard' are present on these messageboards!
The first true sandbox! When you leave a location/quest you actually leave (possibly never to return).
I have seriously thought about making one, but I have much more to do on.
The Ashardalon Series (the first AP?)

Understood Risbeth.
Anyone else need a helping hand picking your home domain? Nearly every real-world country has an analogue in Ravenloft.
I could have sworn I saw something that said where most Dwarves in Ravenloft are from, but I can't seem to find it for the life of me. I am probably too tired and it will slap me in the face at some point. Also, Pyotr is going to speak Darkonese and Balok in addition to Dwarven (and his Psicrystal will speak Dwarven, as it will represent dwarven resolve! :D).

Can anyone kindly do one of those lists compiling all the active character submissions?
Active Character Submissions Database:
Angeline Sainte-Champ - Caliban - Bloodrager - Souragne
Anyone else who would like to be included on this list, please reply to this message with your character's name, race, class and domain of origin. A link to your character info (whether it be a post or a profile) would also rock.
@ Seranov; Looking at the Ravenloft 3.5 PHB (my book): "The center of dwarven culture is the town of Tempe Falls in Darkon." Smaller dwarven communities exist in other mountainous regions in the Core. Lamordia is mentioned specifically, and from looking at the map, Barovia, Borca, Falkovnia, Forlorn, Kartakass, Keening, Nova Vaasa and Tepest all have at least some mountains. No domain other than Darkon has mention of a dwarven population, so it would be included in the "Other, 1%." that most of them have.

Seranov, Angeline is correct. Most Dwarves are from Tempe Falls in Darkon. Most of the core races, apart from Humans, are, as Darkon has been nicknamed by the old school Ravenloft people as 'The Middle Earth of Ravenloft'. The one exception is Elves, who mainly reside in the haunted forests of Sithicus.
Risbeth, I almost have that information ready for you. I just want to finalize one thing before sending it to you. I'm at college at the moment, so I do not have access to some of my material.
Angeline, my thanks for compiling a partial list!
I'm liking what I see thus far from everyone! So far, the murderhobo gauge is at a low level, which is great.

Welp. Did some reading, and it looks like the Eternal Order is very much not the kind of religion that Pyotr would join. If that's the closest thing to Pharasma that Ravenloft has, I'm just going to have him not particularly venerate any deity over another.
It was a big part of the character, though, so it'll take me a bit longer to really nail down everything. I don't have work tomorrow, so I should be able to finish his backstory and such by tomorrow night. :)

A small brown stone on spindly legs, Pyotr's psicrystal speaks dwarven in a rough voice that doesn't match its size or appearance at all. Pyotr found it underneath his pillow one day while staying with Tempe Fall's local church. Single-minded in its (seemingly unexplained) hatred of undead, it urges Varonov to go out and smite the aberrations that threaten the people of Ravenloft.
*With self-propulsion ability activated.
===
Nearly two years ago, Pyotr came across a particularly strange patient. A foggy-eyed human man with a scraggly beard had come calling on the doctor, complaining of pounding migraines and strange, half-heard voices. Finding the man's manner and speech rather strange, Pyotr gave the man a checkup, only to find him in decent health otherwise. But before he could inform the strange man, he started screaming and clutching at his temples. The man's cries echoed strangely, almost like they were reverberating inside Varonov's skull, and the dwarf covered his own ears at the sound. However, the man suddenly went slack and collapsed to the ground, his eyes rolling back in his head. Swiftly coming to his aid, the dwarf suddenly could hear the man's thoughts, weak and fading, whispered in the back of his mind. 'Finally..' was the last thought of the man before the life left his body, the unsaid statement chilling the doctor to the bone, but also filling him with a strange vitality that he couldn't explain. For the next few days, Pyotr struggled with this strange new ability, as he soon realized that he could connect his mind to others', directly connecting himself to their life energy. It terrified the dwarf, as he could now see exactly how sick his patients were, but the underlying fear and despair that they also harbored made his work nearly impossible to complete.
Distraught and at wits end, Varanov decided to stop his work as a physician. He spent a month or two as a hermit, living off the savings he had earned from his work to dedicate himself to better understanding his new powers. As the days went by, he could control them with more efficiency, and he began to realize the true extent of his powers - not simply connecting to the minds and lifeblood of others, but to be able to manipulate them. Realizing this strange magic could be potentially wildly dangerous, and running low on money for maintaining his solitary lifestyle, Pyotr went and spoke with the people of the local church. Finding solace and support, if not faith, in great measure during his stay with them, Pyotr continued to hone his mind. The continual solitude and introspection began to weigh on him, however, and not three months after coming to the church, he left once more, this time to wander the lands of Ravenloft with what little funds remained from his physicians' work.
Hoping to find guidance and purpose, Varonov travels from town to town, helping people as best he can along the way. His search for the explanation, cause, and purpose of his newly acquired mental powers is all that drives him now...
Always nearby is Varonov's psicrystal, a small brown stone that reflects light in strange ways, and scuttles about on tiny legs that just don't seem right.
Though he seems rough around the edges, Pyotr cares dearly for his patients and companions. His newfound abilities have given him the opportunity to become of one mind with them, a chance which he relishes.
Brother Malachi - The head of the local church of Tempe Falls, and the man who welcomed Pyotr into the church. The dwarf's confidant and confessor, Malachi helped the ex-physician to come to terms with his new power. Slightly worried about allowing Varonov to travel on his own, Malachi sends the well-wishes of the church along with the man.

A thousand apologies at once for the delay in posting. I had discovered that a close family member has been diagnosed with a most-likely terminal condition. After recovering from the general shock and malaise of that, I am back posting. I will endeavor to notify in advance of any absences you will see from me.

Background
Sergio Calavantes. To some the name reminds them of good times, to others, well, let's just say that many who would never have committed murder give thought to it when the name is mentioned.
Born of gypsy parents, and born is used with tongue firmly planted in cheek, Sergio seemed a normal child till about the age of 16. About the time he really started to notice he was able use charm and beguilement to his advantage. He used what readily became apparent of his heritage to his advantage as well. His deep black hair gives way to small pinpoints of light in low light, and when someone pays close attention they can tell that the pinpoints mimic the starscape, until Sergio causes the long skein of hair to move and the illusion is lost. And the eyes. Deep blue, and in the right light, you'd swear you see the reflection of the moonphase in them. Ask Sergio about it and he'll laugh and tell you he has no idea what you mean.
Life amongst the gypsies suited Sergio well. Their travelling way of life suited him, as well as their fierce protection of one another. His parents were merchants, and performers, and Sergio learned the art of the violin and song from a very early age. As luck would have it, a wandering noble (or more accurately a wandering noble's wife) took note of the lad's violin and voice and stated a desire to have Sergio perform as a house musician. His father and mother struck up a bargain, and Sergio was "loaned" to the noble family for a term of 2 years.
Sergio performed admirably for his allotted time, but things came to a disastrous end, when Sergio was ready to leave, and the nobleman's daughter proclaimed her love for Sergio, and claimed that Sergio loved her. This angered the nobleman (and infuriated his wife), who accused Sergio of beguiling his daughter. Sergio simply smiled and said "Beguiling is what I do. I'm a performer, m'lord." The nobleman couldn't be rid of Sergio quickly enough, and arrangements were made for the gypsy to leave the next day. That night, Sergio was interrupted by the wails of the nobleman. Quickly shooing his dalliance out of bed, Sergio hurried to see what was the matter. Coming upon the nobleman's bedroom he was shocked by the sight. The nobleman knelt, slumped and sobbing over the form of his wife in a pool of blood. Not ten feet away stood the daughter with a bloody knife in her hands. When she saw Sergio, she smiled a wide, empty eyed smile, "Now I've done away with the whore. We can be together." Sergio choked on the words in the empty air, and stood, mouth agape.
The nobleman turned around to him, rage building on his face. "You...YOU!! You are to blame for ruining the two most beautiful women I know." He stood slowly, his wife's blood staining both the arms and legs of his nightshirt, his face so full of rage giving him the look of some avenging spirit. An accusing hand pointed to Sergio, "Get out, get out now...and may you be cursed with never knowing the real love of a wife or child!"
Sergio made haste to leave that night, but the image of the nobleman standing like some apparition of vengeance haunts him, even now, years later...
